WEBVTT NOTE Podcast: Acts 29 Vancouver Episode: Swim-Deep Publishing Date: 2019-08-25T06:00:44-07:00 Podcast URL: https://acts29.ca Episode URL: https://acts29.ca/swim-deep/ 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.000 Okay, yeah, so I'm going to New York. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:11.000 Yeah, so guys we've been talking about Ezekiel 47 verses 1 to 5, right? 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:18.000 And so it's about that river that issues from the throne and begins to flow 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:22.000 and we've gone through ankle deep water, we've gone through knee deep water, 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:25.000 we've gone through waist deep water, and today we're going to talk about 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:27.000 water deep enough to swim in. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:29.000 So that's what we're going to talk about today. 00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:38.000 And if you remember what we said about the last three levels of water, 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:47.000 we said ankle deep, ankle deep, we started off with this idea of first love 00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:55.000 and how first love betrays your treasure 00:00:55.000 --> 00:01:02.000 and that if you want to cultivate first love, the most important ingredient is time. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:05.000 And we talked about that when we talked about ankle deep. 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:13.000 Then we went to knee deep, and in knee deep we talked about how we need to be 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:21.000 forerunners as in the ones that go before so that they can open up the way for others. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:28.000 And then last week we talked about waist deep water. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:37.000 When we talked about waist deep water, we talked about the nature of the father's love 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:41.000 and how to be secure in it. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:46.000 And if we don't get that right, we don't get anything right. 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:51.000 I personally think after 15 years of teaching, 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:55.000 that's one of the finest teachings that has affected me. 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000 The more I read it, I mean I read it almost every day. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.000 This morning before coming here I began to read it again 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:08.000 because I think that if you can grasp how ridiculous his love is 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.000 and if you can securely sit between his shoulders, 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 as sure of how amazing his love is, life becomes super easy. 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:19.000 I'd go over those notes every day if I were you. 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:23.000 I am. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:28.000 And so today we deal with this idea of the water's gotten so deep 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:34.000 that you can't walk in it anymore, so it's swim deep now. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.000 So that's what we talk about. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:46.000 And we said that this river moves you from your measure to God's fullness. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 That's the idea of this river. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:52.000 This river that issues from the throne of God, if you step into it, 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:58.000 you now move from your measure, your ability, your skill, your competency 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:02.000 to a place where you begin to operate by the fullness of God. 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.000 That's what happens if I'm caught up in this river. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.000 And the deeper I go into this river that issues from the throne of God, 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:14.000 the more I find myself not operating within the limits of who Jacob on his best day is, 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:21.000 but beginning to operate at a place where it's God's fullness that is flowing through me. 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:24.000 And so when we come to Ezekiel 47, verse 5, it says, 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:27.000 the water was so deep it was over my head. 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.000 I could not walk in it. I had to swim. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:32.000 And so the question then is, what does it take to swim in this water? 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:37.000 What does it mean to be caught up in this water where you no longer can walk? 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:39.000 At least when you walk, you have some control. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:41.000 You can dictate which way you go. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:46.000 But you've gotten to a place in this river that issues from the throne of God, 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:52.000 or you've gotten to a place in the life of God where you now are no longer in control. 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:56.000 You are swept by the current of God, and you go where he goes. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:01.000 At least when you were ankle-deep, knee-deep, waist-deep, you could control where you went. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 But now it's around you, in you, over you. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:07.000 That's the place we're talking about today. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.000 Any questions before I go on? 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:31.000 So this is a place where I no longer have the ability to control where I go, 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:36.000 because now, here's what we'll talk about. 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:41.000 Once we grasp the simple thing which we'll talk about, 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:46.000 you will find that God can flow through you any time, any day, as he wants, when he wants, 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:53.000 in any magnitude he wants to, because he's found a conductor that is so easy to flow through. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.000 That's what we'll talk about today. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:07.000 Yeah, when it talks about the river, it's talking about the life of the spirit. 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:18.000 So to find out what it takes to swim in this river, or this kind of water, 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:23.000 or this kind of life that God wants to have you involved in, 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:26.000 let's look at the source of the water. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:30.000 So if you go to Ezekiel 47, Ezekiel 47, 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:44.000 Ezekiel 47, the source of the water is from the throne of God. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:47.000 So the man brought me back to the, reading from verse one, 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:49.000 the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple, 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:54.000 and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple towards the east. 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000 Now go to Isaiah 6, verse one to five, Isaiah 6, one to five, 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:05.000 Isaiah 6, one to five, 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:10.000 Here's what it says, 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:16.000 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:18.000 and the train of his robe filled the temple. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:21.000 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings, 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000 with two they were flying, and they were calling out to one another, 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty, the whole earth is full of his glory. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:35.000 At the sound of his voice, the doorposts and the thresholds shook, 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.000 and the temple was filled with smoke. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:40.000 Wore to me, I cried, I'm ruined, for I'm a man of unclean lips, 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 and I live amongst the people of unclean lips, 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:45.000 and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.000 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:51.000 and he had taken with tongs from the altar. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 With it he touched my mouth and said, 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:58.000 See, this has touched your lips, your guilt has taken away, your sin atoned for. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:01.000 Go to Psalm 24, verse two to four, and then we'll connect it. 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 Psalm 24, verse two to four. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:08.000 Psalm 24, Psalm 24, verse two to four. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 Psalm 24, two to four. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:17.000 Who may ascend the hill of the Lord, who may stand in his holy place, 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:22.000 he who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol, 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:25.000 or swear by what is false, he will receive blessing from the Lord 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.000 and vindication from God his Savior, such is the generation of those that seek him, 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:31.000 who seek your face of God of Jacob. 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:36.000 At the end of the day, guys, if you want to swim in this kind of water 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.000 where God flows through you uninhibited, 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:46.000 then the one thing that we find common in where this water issues from 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:51.000 is this beautiful word called purity. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:59.000 The answer to having God flow through you unimpeded, 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:07.000 the answer to swimming in water that is so deep that there is no way I can walk through it, 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:12.000 the answer to having the Holy Spirit operate as he pleases, 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:17.000 just as he did through Jesus, is wrapped up in that simple word purity. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:20.000 And the very word purity frightens us, eh? 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:23.000 As Christians, that word doesn't hold good things for us, 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.000 because it means a whole set of things that we might have to change or do, 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:31.000 and yet that's the misconception we have. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:33.000 When you look at the source of this river, 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:38.000 you find that at the end of the day it starts from this holy place, from the throne of God, 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:41.000 and whether it be ascending the hill of God, 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:45.000 whether it be the seraphs that are flying around saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:50.000 at the end of the day, the way God begins to flow through me, through you, through us as a church, 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:55.000 without being impeded, is when we as Christians or me as just an individual Christian 00:08:55.000 --> 00:09:02.000 come to perhaps this idea of purity, which is a life of holy beauty, 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:07.000 and we don't put these words together in normal life. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:12.000 Holy beauty, a life of holy beauty. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.000 We'll explain it further, it's not as bad as it looks. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:23.000 Basically what purity means is that it's a life or a thing that is free from deceit, 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:30.000 free from contamination, free from being debased. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:33.000 That's what purity looks like. 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:36.000 That's a regular English definition for purity. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.000 Purity is something that lacks deceit. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:41.000 There's a truth, there's tremendous truth in it. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:47.000 There's something sincere that it has integrity in it, it doesn't have deceit in it. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:50.000 Two, it is uncontaminated, unpolluted. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000 And three, it's not debased. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:54.000 There is a sacredness about it. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:57.000 There's nothing profane in it. 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:00.000 That's a sense of the word purity. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.000 David somehow got it, even though he was in the Old Testament, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:16.000 when he said that you desire purity or truth in the inward parts. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:19.000 Psalm 51, verse 6. 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:23.000 You desire truth in the inward parts. 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:26.000 And whenever we as Christians talk about purity, 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:28.000 we somehow connect it to sexual purity. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:30.000 And while that plays an important role, 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.000 purity is not just confined to sexual purity. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:36.000 It's purity in generosity, it's purity in relationships, 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:40.000 it's purity in externals, externals from modestly dressing 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.000 and knowing what is showing and what is not showing, 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:47.000 to purity in intent, purity in affection, purity in speech, 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:50.000 purity in what you grieve over and what you rejoice over. 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:51.000 Let me say that again. 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:54.000 Whenever we think of purity in churches, 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.000 we immediately think of sexual purity. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:00.000 And while that is important, it is not the only thing. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:05.000 Besides sexual purity, there should be purity in my generosity. 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:08.000 There should be purity in my intent. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:11.000 There should be purity in my external conduct. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:14.000 There should be purity in my speech and my thinking. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:20.000 There should be purity in what I grieve over and what I rejoice over. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:23.000 There should be purity in my affection. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:25.000 Guys, the strange thing is, 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:31.000 it's only Christians that have to deal with purity at such an intense level. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:32.000 You know why? 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:37.000 Because it is only the Christian God that came to live amongst the people. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.000 No other God has taken up a dwelling amongst people. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:43.000 Every other God was external. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:48.000 It was outside, coming to the earth through vehicles, 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:53.000 through animals, through trees, through every other thing but themselves, 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.000 or through outsiders. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 But no God actually came and dwelt amongst those people. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.000 The day Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.000 told his people that, 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:04.000 build me a tabernacle, I'm going to come and live amongst you, 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:05.000 guess what happened? 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:08.000 Immediately you had to have a whole set of laws 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:11.000 that now define ceremonial and moral purity. 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:15.000 His Holiness demanded that the people he now dwelt amongst 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:18.000 required now to walk purely, 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:22.000 which is why then Israel had 613 laws. 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:24.000 And why did they have 613 laws? 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.000 Because the Holy God of Israel, 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:28.000 Yahweh, the creator of the universe, 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:32.000 had decided that he's going to come and dwell in their midst. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.000 And the moment he decided to dwell in their midst, 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:38.000 now they had a set of rules that would render them 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 holy, set apart, or pure. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 And all those ritual, 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:49.000 laws of ritual purity, of ceremonial purity, of moral purity, 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:51.000 came because God began to dwell amongst them. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:54.000 If you were any other religion, you wouldn't have this problem. 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.000 That was in the Old Testament. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:59.000 Now think of what's happened in the New Testament. 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:02.000 In the New Testament, he isn't even dwelling in a tabernacle 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 that Moses visits once in a while. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:06.000 In the New Testament, he comes and dwells in you. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:11.000 Only now, he doesn't have a set of laws that keep you pure. 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:13.000 He comes into you and says, 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:16.000 I have made you pure, now continue in purity. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.000 There is a reason why we are called to purity, 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:26.000 and no other religion demands this kind of purity. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:30.000 Every other religion has a solution for impurity, 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:33.000 but does not have a demand for purity. 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:41.000 All other religions will give you a solution for making impure pure, 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:44.000 but no other religion demands purity, 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:47.000 because their holy God, 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:51.000 if there are any other holy gods, which I believe there aren't, 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:56.000 but now that Yahweh the Holy One has decided to dwell amongst the people, 00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:00.000 his people have to now begin to walk in purity. 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.000 So purity and holiness are different, 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:06.000 but purity almost tunnels the pathway into holiness. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:09.000 Purity tunnels the pathway into holiness. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:11.000 Purity and holiness are different. 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:12.000 They are two separate words. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:14.000 Purity comes from a word called tahir. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.000 Holiness comes from a word called kadosh. 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.000 And both are separate. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:20.000 One is being set apart, one is being without blemish. 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.000 The thing is, my being without blemish allows me to tunnel 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:27.000 through any mountain into God's holiness. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.000 And by the way, God's holiness is 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:34.000 See, look at what God says in 1 Peter 1, 15 and 16. 00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:37.000 He says, Peter is speaking to people and he says, 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:39.000 hey, by the way, just so you know, your God is holy, 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:43.000 and therefore be holy because he is holy. 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:46.000 You know, this is the odd thing about God. 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:48.000 He isn't asking you to be holy because you're a Christian. 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:53.000 He's asking you to be holy because relational fellowship comes through holiness. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:57.000 Relational fellowship comes through holiness. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:00.000 God isn't asking you to be holy because you're a Christian. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.000 God is asking you to be holy because, hey, Jacob, this is my nature. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.000 I have now included you in my family. 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:11.000 If you want to take full advantage of this relationship, 00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:13.000 then be holy because I am holy, 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:15.000 because you and I will be able to relate really well, 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:20.000 and you will experience everything that I am through this channel. 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:23.000 And I want to tell you that I am a Christian. 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:27.000 I want to experience everything that I am through this channel, 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:35.000 which is why any attempt that any Christian makes to be pure 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:38.000 without a relationship is bound to fail. 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:46.000 There was a movement called Puritanism that happened long ago. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:51.000 Their intent was good, but it fell on its face, man. 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:59.000 Any questions before we go on? 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:05.000 The key to relational fellowship with God is holiness. 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:09.000 The key to relational fellowship with God is holiness 00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:12.000 because this is something he just can't abandon. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:15.000 He can't just switch off and say, ah, I'll be an unholy God for the next little while 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:17.000 because I really want to relate to you, Jacob. 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:19.000 No, ain't happening. 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:21.000 He is holy. 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.000 So when he says, hey, Jacob, come and walk in this way, 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:27.000 his intent is this way you'll be able to relate to me. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:31.000 Because it's not Jacob who is the unchanging one. 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:33.000 It's he who is the unchanging one. 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:35.000 So guess who has to change? 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:37.000 Why? 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.000 Sorry? 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:44.000 I can't. 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:46.000 I didn't understand. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:50.000 What's the third one? 00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:17.000 Any questions, guys? 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:23.000 Okay. 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:30.000 Hey, one of the advantages of being someone who desires purity is that, 00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:33.000 and Jesus said it himself, he says in Matthew 5, 8, 00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:35.000 that blessed are you if you're pure. 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:37.000 Blessed are the pure in heart. 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:39.000 He doesn't say pure in external conduct. 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:42.000 He says blessed are the pure in heart, some place that only he sees. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:45.000 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:47.000 Now, what is it to see God?
