So hopefully we can start focusing 00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:01.320 on repeating teachings or going over old stuff in the near future and having more and more 00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:09.320 of us do the work of ministry, do the work that a pastor should do so that in a few years 00:01:15.720 --> 00:01:22.720 there is hardly anyone who doesn't have the ability to do the work that a pastor should 00:01:24.320 --> 00:01:31.320 do. So we are getting to that place where we can both plant a church and establish a 00:01:31.320 --> 00:01:36.320 church with help. I think we are coming to that place where how much can you teach, right? 00:01:36.320 --> 00:01:43.320 There is no end to teaching, the Bible says. There is no end to the publishing of books, 00:01:43.560 --> 00:01:50.560 that's what the Bible says. Every revival comes with signs and wonders and I remember 00:01:51.080 --> 00:01:57.520 talking about this in November last year but I just want to talk about signs and wonders. 00:01:57.520 --> 00:02:04.520 Today I want to talk about the why of signs and wonders, tomorrow perhaps the how of signs 00:02:04.680 --> 00:02:11.000 and wonders. The why of signs and wonders and the how of signs and wonders. There is 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:18.000 something on the side that I want to address. I might be a little pensive today, I don't 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:25.000 know. But the more easily you are offended, the more easily you give in to your sensitivities, 00:02:31.360 --> 00:02:37.720 the more easy it is for the enemy to trip you up. I'm not saying become callous or 00:02:37.720 --> 00:02:44.720 hard skinned or hard hearted but learn to recover from your offence, from your guilt, 00:02:48.520 --> 00:02:55.520 sensitivities quickly. Don't sulk, don't distance people from you because they let 00:02:57.560 --> 00:03:04.080 you down or because you feel hurt. Don't do stuff like that. It prevents you from going 00:03:04.080 --> 00:03:11.080 further. It prevents you from being selected for training by the Holy Spirit because the 00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:19.080 skin is so thin and the sensitivities are so acute and the childish responses are so 00:03:19.080 --> 00:03:26.080 intense that the Spirit of God has to wait because once the battle starts, offence will 00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:33.080 come easily and it will trip us up. I just need to say that and if the hat fits, wear 00:03:34.080 --> 00:03:40.160 it. What we are entering into, what we are going into requires that we forgive offence 00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:47.160 fast and we move together as a unit, not isolated, not separated, not...yeah, don't please. 00:03:55.320 --> 00:04:02.320 Yeah. I mean if I'm someone who bruises easily, you would not be able to help me. I mean 00:04:10.160 --> 00:04:16.720 you would have to have me play with you on a soccer field or a rugby field. Why? Because 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:23.000 I bruise easily. So if I bruise easily, you'll have to either put me in a position where 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.320 I do not bruise easily or you'll have to call me up when you're playing a team that's relatively 00:04:27.320 --> 00:04:33.480 weak so that nobody pushes me around. That's okay when we start but a time comes when one 00:04:33.480 --> 00:04:40.480 needs to learn how not to be someone who bruises easily. Keep that in mind, eh? It's 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:45.000 important because I really believe we are coming into that time where we have to move 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:52.000 together as a cohesive unit, not isolated, with less coping mechanisms, less coping mechanisms. 00:04:55.040 --> 00:04:58.640 The greater our transparency, the less of the coping mechanisms. This has nothing to 00:04:58.640 --> 00:05:04.200 do with the teaching. I'm just saying this on the side because it's for whatever reason 00:05:04.200 --> 00:05:09.320 pressing on my heart. It applies to both guys and girls, eh? This is not a guy thing or 00:05:09.320 --> 00:05:16.320 a girl thing. It applies to both of us. I remember someone saying this long ago. Your 00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:23.280 back must be like a colander where lots of people have stabbed you. There are a lot of 00:05:23.280 --> 00:05:30.280 holes but they're also sealed very quickly. Thank God we don't stab each other in this 00:05:32.440 --> 00:05:39.440 church. And if we do, get healed anyways. I know that sounds terribly callous but I can 00:05:45.640 --> 00:05:50.760 say that because we don't stab each other. Alright, I want the volume down a little because 00:05:50.760 --> 00:05:57.760 now it's beginning to echo. Today I want to talk about signs and wonders because signs 00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:08.600 and wonders are quite expected in a revival. So today we'll talk about the why of signs 00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:16.480 and wonders. Why do we need signs and wonders? And then tomorrow we'll talk about how do 00:06:16.480 --> 00:06:23.480 we go about then walking in signs and wonders. Another word for signs and wonders is miracles. 00:06:30.200 --> 00:06:37.200 Miracles are basically miracles and miracles are things that violate or override natural 00:06:37.200 --> 00:06:44.200 order. So all the things that Don was speaking about make sense because that's something 00:06:53.480 --> 00:06:59.480 God wants us to walk in. God wants us to walk in the 17 year old's footstep. God wants us 00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:06.480 to do again what he always likes doing. And so, the reason why we need signs and wonders 00:07:08.160 --> 00:07:15.160 miracles are basically things that violate or overrule natural order. And they point 00:07:15.400 --> 00:07:22.400 to God, they point to God and they also point to his presence amongst a people. They also 00:07:26.220 --> 00:07:33.220 point to his presence amongst a people. I'd go so far as to say that a church that is 00:07:33.220 --> 00:07:40.220 devoid of signs, miracles and wonders... Just one sec guys. Check, check, check. Okay. 00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:10.220 Betty, what does it mean more transparency? Okay, this is going back to the previous 00:08:12.460 --> 00:08:19.460 conversations. Betty is asking what does it mean to have more transparency? More transparency 00:08:20.660 --> 00:08:27.660 is when people see Jesus more easily. Jesus isn't hidden. More and more when people see 00:08:28.660 --> 00:08:35.660 me, they'll see more and more of Jesus's characteristics come out. One of the things that Jesus wasn't 00:08:35.660 --> 00:08:42.660 sensitive though... Jesus wasn't offended easily though he was the ultimate sensitive 00:08:43.660 --> 00:08:50.660 man. He could be moved by things so easily on heaven and in earth. And so, we think transparency 00:08:50.660 --> 00:08:55.660 is the ability to see through a person. When it comes to Christianity, transparency is 00:08:55.660 --> 00:09:01.660 the ability of people to see into you and see the one who lives in you. And therefore, 00:09:01.660 --> 00:09:07.660 that's only possible as the veil of flesh becomes less and less obvious where pretense 00:09:07.660 --> 00:09:14.660 and being someone at certain times of the day and being someone else at other times 00:09:14.660 --> 00:09:20.660 of the day goes away. Where there's only one person and that person is so united with 00:09:20.660 --> 00:09:26.660 Christ and that the Christ begins to show more because the person and Christ are becoming 00:09:26.660 --> 00:09:33.660 so one. Transparency exposes Christ in a person. Transparency in a Christian's case is not 00:09:34.660 --> 00:09:38.660 this is what you see is what you get. No. What you see is not what you get for the Christian. 00:09:39.660 --> 00:09:46.660 What you see should be Jesus. And that only happens as pretense and being two people or 00:09:46.660 --> 00:09:53.660 three people or four people disappears and the Christness comes out. I've said this before 00:09:54.660 --> 00:09:59.660 but one of the things that really impressed me about Michael W. Smith was not his singing. 00:09:59.660 --> 00:10:06.660 It was though I love the song. Hallelujah. But one of the things he said through the 00:10:06.660 --> 00:10:13.660 year when he was interviewed and they asked him so what's your new year resolution and 00:10:13.660 --> 00:10:18.660 he said my new year resolution is that at the end of the year I will no longer be offended 00:10:18.660 --> 00:10:23.660 by people. I won't take offense. I thought what a statement. Man I wish I could get there. 00:10:23.660 --> 00:10:29.660 Where you are. Where it's impossible for you to offend me. Not because you are not offensive 00:10:29.660 --> 00:10:36.660 but because I'm not taking offense because of the Christ in me. If Jesus were to clam up 00:10:36.660 --> 00:10:51.660 every time he's offended or is grieved my God man we'd have a shut heaven. Yeah. So 00:10:51.660 --> 00:10:58.660 signs and wonders are miracles that violate or overrule natural order. Signs and miracles 00:10:58.660 --> 00:11:04.660 point to God and it marks us as a distinct people that carry the presence of God. If 00:11:04.660 --> 00:11:22.660 you look at Deuteronomy 434. Deuteronomy 434. Deuteronomy 434. Has any God reading from 00:11:22.660 --> 00:11:31.660 verse 32. Deuteronomy 432 onwards. Ask now about the former days long before your time 00:11:31.660 --> 00:11:35.660 from the day God created man on earth. Ask from one end of the heavens to the other. 00:11:35.660 --> 00:11:41.660 Has anything so great as this ever happened or has anything like it ever been heard of? 00:11:41.660 --> 00:11:46.660 Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire as you have and lived? 00:11:46.660 --> 00:11:51.660 Has any God ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation by testings, 00:11:51.660 --> 00:11:57.660 by miraculous signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm or by 00:11:57.660 --> 00:12:02.660 great and awesome deeds like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before 00:12:02.660 --> 00:12:06.660 your eyes. You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God. 00:12:06.660 --> 00:12:14.660 Besides him there is no other. Signs and wonders and miracles are supposed to help us show 00:12:14.660 --> 00:12:19.660 people that we are a distinct people and carry the presence of God and a church that 00:12:19.660 --> 00:12:30.660 does not walk in signs, wonders and miracles is a church that cannot display his presence 00:12:30.660 --> 00:12:37.660 the way they are supposed to. Sure you can preach it but the thing is and I will say 00:12:37.660 --> 00:12:42.660 this many times over later that the Holy Spirit never separates words and deeds. The 00:12:42.660 --> 00:12:47.660 Holy Spirit comes with this double expression of word and deed is it's never separate, 00:12:47.660 --> 00:12:52.660 never separate. Today we are just talking about the why of signs and wonders. 00:12:52.660 --> 00:13:03.660 Guys sorry I am going back to the offense thing. Not to take offense doesn't mean you 00:13:03.660 --> 00:13:09.660 don't hurt. Not to take offense is to hurt and not react to it childishly, not react 00:13:09.660 --> 00:13:16.660 to it by building up defense mechanisms, not react to it by withdrawing and isolating 00:13:16.660 --> 00:13:23.660 and saying alright I will keep a healthy distance so that I don't get hurt again. Not taking 00:13:23.660 --> 00:13:28.660 the grief to a place of offense where now there is bitterness that has come out of the 00:13:28.660 --> 00:13:33.660 hurt. It is the ability to hurt and then take the hurt to God and take the hurt to the person 00:13:34.660 --> 00:13:41.660 if there are ways to take it to the person and then leap over it into a new place. That's 00:13:42.660 --> 00:13:47.660 something that Jesus has the ability to do and you and I should learn to do because it's 00:13:47.660 --> 00:13:54.660 an easy trip, easy tripper that the devil uses against Christians. Don't let it happen 00:13:55.660 --> 00:14:02.660 to you because we must go to Romans 8 and become conquerors, overcomers. That's enough 00:14:02.660 --> 00:14:07.660 said about that. Please don't ask me a question about that now. If you have a question you 00:14:07.660 --> 00:14:11.660 can ask me later because otherwise I will never finish this. It's my fault but don't 00:14:11.660 --> 00:14:19.660 add to it. So if I were to redefine signs and wonders of miracles I would redefine it 00:14:19.660 --> 00:14:26.660 this way. I would redefine it as the works of God. I love this definition. I would redefine 00:14:27.660 --> 00:14:34.660 miracles as the works of God, as the works of God that restore created order and ends 00:14:47.660 --> 00:14:54.660 brokenness. That's why God does miracles. He does miracles. He does miracles. He does 00:14:56.660 --> 00:15:03.660 miracles. God is continually in the business of trying to restore Eden. What had been broken 00:15:05.660 --> 00:15:09.660 in Eden, what has been destroyed in Eden, what has been introduced in Eden in terms 00:15:09.660 --> 00:15:16.660 of pain, tears, death. He wants to restore that and it won't be restored to Revelation 00:15:16.660 --> 00:15:23.660 21 verse 4 but while we are waiting for Revelation 21 verse 4 God does signs and wonders. God 00:15:24.660 --> 00:15:31.660 overrules natural order. God violates natural order. Why? Because he does these works so 00:15:33.660 --> 00:15:39.660 that he can restore created order and undo brokenness. Just pause on that and you will 00:15:39.660 --> 00:15:44.660 understand why God does signs and miracles. God doesn't do signs and miracles to impress 00:15:44.660 --> 00:15:51.660 us. He's not a magician. He's got an intent that is so much deeper, so much more loving, 00:15:51.660 --> 00:15:57.660 so much more plan A, so much more restorative. I'm doing signs and miracles and wonders 00:15:57.660 --> 00:16:02.660 children because I want to restore that which was broken. I want to restore created order 00:16:02.660 --> 00:16:09.660 to how I had dreamt it to be. I want to end brokenness by overruling what is happening 00:16:12.660 --> 00:16:19.660 naturally in a world that is decaying. And this is why then you see Jesus using miracles 00:16:21.660 --> 00:16:26.660 and miraculous powers to heal the sick, to feed the hungry, to raise the dead. What's 00:16:26.660 --> 00:16:33.660 he doing there? He's not trying to say okay I can produce food. He's not saying okay let 00:16:33.660 --> 00:16:36.660 me show you how much power I have. Let me heal a few sick. No. He's doing it because 00:16:36.660 --> 00:16:43.660 he wants to restore that which was destroyed, restore the order that he had planned initially. 00:16:45.660 --> 00:16:50.660 He used his miraculous power to heal the sick, to feed the hungry, to raise the dead and 00:16:50.660 --> 00:16:55.660 that is part of the gospel. That is part of the gospel. We'll talk about the gospel 00:16:55.660 --> 00:17:01.660 a little more tomorrow but that is part of the gospel. Signs and wonders are part of 00:17:01.660 --> 00:17:10.660 the gospel. Signs, wonders and miracles are part of the gospel. What is the gospel? One 00:17:10.660 --> 00:17:17.660 of the things we'll explore tomorrow. At the end of the day the gospel is announcing the 00:17:17.660 --> 00:17:23.660 good news that God is restoring and making all things new. The gospel is announcing 00:17:23.660 --> 00:17:29.660 the good news that God is restoring and making all things new. And this is part of it. Making 00:17:29.660 --> 00:17:39.660 a crippled hand new. Making a dead life come back to new life. It is a shame that we have 00:17:39.660 --> 00:17:45.660 confined God to regenerating the spirit and making us born again but not allowing him 00:17:45.660 --> 00:17:50.660 to touch any other part of us. There is hardly an expectation. There is sometimes wishful 00:17:50.660 --> 00:17:56.660 thinking, there is sometimes hope but there is hardly an expectation. We have such a sure 00:17:56.660 --> 00:18:01.660 confidence in terms of heaven. We are so sure that because we are born again we will go 00:18:01.660 --> 00:18:06.660 to heaven. But there isn't that sure confidence when it comes to other things with regard 00:18:06.660 --> 00:18:12.660 to signs and wonders and miracles. And so we come up with such lousy theology like the 00:18:12.660 --> 00:18:21.660 greatest miracle that God does is the miracle of getting one saved. While it may be true 00:18:21.660 --> 00:18:28.660 it still just sucks when it is put that way and you dismiss a whole side of the gospel 00:18:28.660 --> 00:18:38.660 then. In the gospel then the book of Acts miracles were part of Jesus' message. Miracles 00:18:38.660 --> 00:18:44.660 were part of Jesus' message and then he would preach and explain it. Because many people 00:18:44.660 --> 00:18:49.660 say oh the signs and wonders and miracles do not save us so we shouldn't focus on that. 00:18:49.660 --> 00:18:54.660 I am saying to you that there were many times when Jesus actually used miracles, signs and 00:18:54.660 --> 00:18:59.660 wonders as part of his message and after performing miracles, signs and wonders he would actually 00:18:59.660 --> 00:19:09.660 preach on it. In Matthew 11 verse 4 John's disciples are sent to him and Jesus says to them, 00:19:09.660 --> 00:19:15.660 John's disciples ask are you the real Messiah? And he says to them go tell John that the dead 00:19:15.660 --> 00:19:19.660 are being raised, the sick are being healed, lepers are being cleansed, the blind are seeing 00:19:19.660 --> 00:19:25.660 and anyone who doesn't take offense at this and believes it, blessed are they. That's what he 00:19:25.660 --> 00:19:30.660 tells them. That yeah you want to know if I am the Messiah tell John the Baptist that this is what 00:19:30.660 --> 00:19:37.660 I am doing. And in a sense signs, miracles and wonders authenticated Jesus' Messiahship. How dare 00:19:37.660 --> 00:19:45.660 we take it away? How dare we stop short of it? I want to walk in this. I don't have as many years 00:19:45.660 --> 00:19:53.660 as many of you do. But if someone had helped me start much earlier in this and given me an understanding 00:19:53.660 --> 00:20:07.660 of it, wouldn't the world have benefited more? In Acts chapter 3 verse 16 Peter and John have just 00:20:07.660 --> 00:20:14.660 healed the paralytic at the beautiful gate and Peter says hey I know we've done the healing and 00:20:14.660 --> 00:20:18.660 some of you are upset and some of you are wondering what's happening. I just want you to know that 00:20:18.660 --> 00:20:25.660 this man has been healed in the name of Jesus and in no other name. Acts chapter 3 verse 16. He uses 00:20:25.660 --> 00:20:31.660 a miracle sign of wonder to then begin, he first performs a miracle sign of wonder and then uses a 00:20:31.660 --> 00:20:36.660 message or teach on what just happened in the name of Jesus. The same thing happens again in Acts chapter 00:20:36.660 --> 00:20:47.660 14 verse 15 where I think he is in Lystra and in Lystra a cripple is healed and people begin to think 00:20:47.660 --> 00:20:54.660 that Paul and Barnabas are the Greek gods Zeus and someone else and they begin to worship Paul 00:20:54.660 --> 00:20:59.660 and Barnabas and again he takes the miracle sign of wonder and uses that to then begin to teach and 00:20:59.660 --> 00:21:10.660 listen this is done again in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit as I said earlier always presents 00:21:10.660 --> 00:21:17.660 a double expression of words and deeds. A double expression. He's not saying oh just preach the word 00:21:17.660 --> 00:21:23.660 and the power of God unto salvation is released in the word which is true. Which is true that the power 00:21:23.660 --> 00:21:28.660 of God unto salvation is in the word of God. We can't deny that but at the same time the Holy Spirit 00:21:28.660 --> 00:21:34.660 doesn't divide it like that. He always says words and deeds. It would never occur to Paul that the 00:21:34.660 --> 00:21:40.660 miraculous would not accompany the proclamation of the gospel. It would never occur to Paul. And you 00:21:40.660 --> 00:21:46.660 see it in his writings. We'll read that. Romans 15, 18, 19. It has never occurred to him that I've got to 00:21:46.660 --> 00:21:52.660 separate words and deeds. It's the word that saves and deeds are not important. He always would talk 00:21:52.660 --> 00:21:58.660 about it as if the proclamation of the gospel is accompanied by the miraculous. And the way he thought 00:21:58.660 --> 00:22:04.660 was simply because that's the way the Holy Spirit works. The words would end up 00:22:04.660 --> 00:22:10.660 accompanying. The words would end up being accompanied by the deeds and the deeds would authenticate 00:22:10.660 --> 00:22:18.660 the word. The words would end up producing deeds and the deeds or the works. The words would produce 00:22:18.660 --> 00:22:26.660 works and the works would authenticate the word. The words would produce works and the works would 00:22:26.660 --> 00:22:36.660 authenticate the word. We have to struggle, grapple, wrestle into this. 00:22:36.660 --> 00:22:42.660 Like everything else it may require practice. It may require effort. It may require a new way of thinking. 00:22:42.660 --> 00:22:48.660 It may require persistence. It may require repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. But a day will come 00:22:48.660 --> 00:22:54.660 like in so many other areas in our lives. Why is this church a church that hears God well? Why is this 00:22:54.660 --> 00:23:00.660 church that has the ability to prophesy? Why is this church becoming less pastor-oriented and more 00:23:00.660 --> 00:23:06.660 people-oriented? Why is it that clergy is not important in this church? Why is it that nations 00:23:06.660 --> 00:23:12.660 are affected by this church? Because at some point we decided that this is worth pressing into. So press and press and press and press and 00:23:12.660 --> 00:23:18.660 repeat, repeat, repeat, practice, practice, practice. And then one day it becomes very natural and nobody even thinks about it. 00:23:24.660 --> 00:23:28.660 In most things Christian there's this thing called appropriation. 00:23:30.660 --> 00:23:36.660 Where you have to appropriate what God is giving. And appropriation requires breaking out of our natural, 00:23:36.660 --> 00:23:42.660 breaking out of our ways of thinking, breaking out of our set patterns, breaking out of our mindset, and appropriating 00:23:42.660 --> 00:23:48.660 what God is giving and what he gives is so unhandleable because it's absolutely supernatural, it's illogical, 00:23:48.660 --> 00:23:54.660 it defies the mind. But once you appropriate it, it becomes flesh. And once the word becomes flesh, 00:23:54.660 --> 00:23:58.660 you begin to walk in it as if it's the most natural thing. 00:24:06.660 --> 00:24:12.660 Guys, today's needs in the world are so great and the church is so weak to meet it that we must go the Acts 00:24:12.660 --> 00:24:18.660 chapter 5 verse 12 to 16 route. Acts chapter 5 verse 12 to 16 route. I'm so glad for the book of Acts, man. 00:24:18.660 --> 00:24:24.660 So glad we can use that as a pattern today. Acts chapter 5 verse 12 to 16. 00:24:26.660 --> 00:24:30.660 It says that the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 00:24:32.660 --> 00:24:36.660 Manoj, can you grab me a bottle of water? Thanks. 00:24:36.660 --> 00:24:40.660 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. 00:24:40.660 --> 00:24:44.660 And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 00:24:44.660 --> 00:24:48.660 No one dared join them even though they were highly regarded by the people. 00:24:48.660 --> 00:24:52.660 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 00:24:52.660 --> 00:24:56.660 Let me read it properly. Let me read it as if I'm actually interested in what I'm reading. 00:24:56.660 --> 00:25:00.660 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 00:25:00.660 --> 00:25:04.660 Many, not some. The apostles performed and performed 00:25:04.660 --> 00:25:08.660 Oh, it's not a performance. I don't know what the word actually means in Greek, but they actually did. 00:25:08.660 --> 00:25:12.660 It was visible for all. Some of them, the risen Christ 00:28:28.660 --> 00:28:32.660 had appeared to them. The preaching was phenomenal. 00:28:32.660 --> 00:28:36.660 They were preaching pretty well. The first time Peter spoke, 3,000 got saved. 00:28:36.660 --> 00:28:40.660 The second time they spoke, 5,000 got saved. So it was not like a church that 00:28:40.660 --> 00:28:44.660 didn't have things happening. Despite that, look at their cry in Acts 00:28:44.660 --> 00:28:48.660 Chapter 4 verse 29 and 30. 00:28:48.660 --> 00:28:52.660 And so here's their desperate cry. 00:28:52.660 --> 00:28:56.660 Their desperate cry is three pronged. 00:28:56.660 --> 00:29:00.660 One, boldness to witness. 00:29:00.660 --> 00:29:04.660 Two, boldness to witness. 00:29:04.660 --> 00:29:08.660 Three, boldness to witness. 00:29:08.660 --> 00:29:12.660 Four, boldness to witness. 00:29:12.660 --> 00:29:16.660 Five, boldness to witness. 00:29:16.660 --> 00:29:20.660 One, boldness to witness. That's where they start, eh? 00:29:20.660 --> 00:29:24.660 I will probably touch on that tomorrow again. If a church 00:30:18.660 --> 00:30:22.660 that had seen the risen Christ, that preached and had so many people 00:30:22.660 --> 00:30:26.660 come in and become believers. If a church like that had this 00:30:26.660 --> 00:30:30.660 desperate cry right off the bat early in their life, 00:30:30.660 --> 00:30:34.660 they wanted it so badly. They wanted it so badly. 00:30:34.660 --> 00:30:38.660 That's something that God really always responds to, eh? When you want something 00:30:38.660 --> 00:30:42.660 badly for the, when you want something badly for good reason, 00:30:42.660 --> 00:30:46.660 God responds. When you want something really badly for good reason, 00:30:46.660 --> 00:30:50.660 God almost always responds. 00:30:54.660 --> 00:30:58.660 Why did they want it so badly? Because they knew 00:30:58.660 --> 00:31:02.660 that signs and wonders helped bring people to the Lord. 00:31:02.660 --> 00:31:06.660 They knew that signs and wonders brought people to the Lord. Some of them had 00:31:06.660 --> 00:31:10.660 seen it when they were walking with Jesus. Go to Acts chapter 9, 00:31:10.660 --> 00:31:14.660 verse 34 to 40. 00:31:14.660 --> 00:31:18.660 Acts chapter 9, verse 34 to 40. 00:31:22.660 --> 00:31:26.660 As Peter travelled about the country, he went to visit the saints in Lydda. 00:31:26.660 --> 00:31:30.660 There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for 00:31:30.660 --> 00:31:34.660 eight years. Aeneas Peter said, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up, 00:31:34.660 --> 00:31:38.660 take care of your mat. Immediately Aeneas got up. Peter had seen this before. 00:31:38.660 --> 00:31:42.660 Peter had seen this before. He's actually using almost the exact same words that Jesus used. 00:31:42.660 --> 00:31:46.660 Get up, pick up your mat. 00:31:50.660 --> 00:31:54.660 Immediately Aeneas got up. All those who lived in Lydda. 00:31:54.660 --> 00:31:58.660 Look at that, eh? Let's assume Luke was exaggerating. 00:31:58.660 --> 00:32:02.660 And that it was not all, it was 90%. He wasn't exaggerating, 00:32:02.660 --> 00:32:06.660 but look what it says. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon, who saw him, 00:32:06.660 --> 00:32:10.660 saw him and turned to the Lord. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon, 00:32:10.660 --> 00:32:14.660 all. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon, two small towns, 00:32:14.660 --> 00:32:18.660 saw him and turned to the Lord. In Joppa, there was a 00:32:18.660 --> 00:32:22.660 disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas, who was always 00:32:22.660 --> 00:32:26.660 doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died and her body 00:32:26.660 --> 00:32:30.660 was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa, so when the disciples heard 00:32:30.660 --> 00:32:34.660 that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged, 00:32:34.660 --> 00:32:38.660 please come at once. Peter went with them and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to his room. 00:32:38.660 --> 00:32:42.660 All the widows stood around him crying and showing him the robes and other clothing 00:32:42.660 --> 00:32:46.660 that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Peter sent them all out of the room 00:32:46.660 --> 00:32:50.660 when he got down on his knees and prayed. He had seen that before. 00:32:50.660 --> 00:32:54.660 He was there that day when Jesus took Peter and John with him to pray for 00:32:54.660 --> 00:32:58.660 the little girl and Jesus chased all the mourners out. And then 00:32:58.660 --> 00:33:02.660 Peter and John were there. This is the other great thing with Science, Miracles and Wonders. 00:33:02.660 --> 00:33:06.660 Once a church, once some people in the church or once a church 00:33:06.660 --> 00:33:10.660 or once one or two people in the church start beginning to walk in this, others 00:33:10.660 --> 00:33:14.660 will see it and they will know how to do it. It's not some kind of a 00:33:14.660 --> 00:33:18.660 technique. It is the boldness, 00:33:18.660 --> 00:33:22.660 the expectation, the methodology, 00:33:22.660 --> 00:33:26.660 yes, but the technique is not what is important. It is 00:33:26.660 --> 00:33:30.660 fascinating how in this religion called Christianity 00:33:30.660 --> 00:33:34.660 you imitate who you associate with 00:33:34.660 --> 00:33:38.660 and in you in the process Christ is formed. You imitate 00:33:38.660 --> 00:33:42.660 who you associate with. And so you've got to be careful about your associations 00:33:42.660 --> 00:33:46.660 because if you are associating with someone who does not believe in miracles, 00:33:46.660 --> 00:33:50.660 science and wonders, who is able to explain them away, who pooh-poos them, and there 00:33:50.660 --> 00:33:54.660 can be people like that at Acts 29. I'm not thinking of anybody. But if there are 00:33:54.660 --> 00:33:58.660 people like that and you associate with them, that's exactly what you get. You imitate 00:33:58.660 --> 00:34:02.660 those that you associate with most of the time. 00:34:02.660 --> 00:34:06.660 And in the process something is formed in you. And if you imitate those 00:34:06.660 --> 00:34:10.660 that are associated with Christ, Christ is formed in you. 00:34:14.660 --> 00:34:18.660 And so Peter, and this is exactly why Jesus had 00:34:18.660 --> 00:34:22.660 these guys hanging with him. If you go to Mark chapter 3, 00:34:22.660 --> 00:34:26.660 I think it's Mark chapter 3, 00:34:26.660 --> 00:34:30.660 I'm not sure. 00:34:30.660 --> 00:34:34.660 Mark chapter 3 verse 14, 00:34:34.660 --> 00:34:38.660 He appointed twelve, 00:34:38.660 --> 00:34:42.660 designating them as apostles, that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach. 00:34:42.660 --> 00:34:46.660 That they might be with him and that he may send them out to preach. 00:34:46.660 --> 00:34:50.660 Why be with him? Because in being with him they would see how he does things. 00:34:50.660 --> 00:34:54.660 And now after he's left the earth and after the Spirit of God has come, 00:34:54.660 --> 00:34:58.660 in a few short verses we see Peter doing twice what Jesus 00:34:58.660 --> 00:35:02.660 did when he used to walk with Peter. Now you can see why Jesus was taking Peter 00:35:02.660 --> 00:35:06.660 and John with him into certain places he wouldn't take the rest of them. 00:35:06.660 --> 00:35:10.660 And so continuing, verse 00:35:10.660 --> 00:35:14.660 40, Peter sent them all out of the room, 00:35:14.660 --> 00:35:18.660 then he got down on his knees and prayed, turning towards the dead woman he said, 00:35:18.660 --> 00:35:22.660 Here is Tabitha get up. In Jesus' case he said, 00:35:22.660 --> 00:35:26.660 Talitha kumi, little girl arise. Here is Tabitha get up. 00:35:26.660 --> 00:35:30.660 She opened her eyes and seeing Peter she sat up. 00:35:30.660 --> 00:35:34.660 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called 00:35:34.660 --> 00:35:38.660 the believers and widows and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa. 00:35:38.660 --> 00:35:42.660 And many people believed in the Lord. Peter stayed in Joppa for some more time with 00:35:42.660 --> 00:35:46.660 a tanner named Simon. In Joppa many people believed. In Lida and 00:35:46.660 --> 00:35:50.660 Sharon all believed. 00:35:50.660 --> 00:35:54.660 Signs and wonders helped people bring, helped 00:35:54.660 --> 00:35:58.660 bring people to the Lord. In Acts, in the book of Acts there are 17 00:35:58.660 --> 00:36:02.660 times when signs of miracles resulted in 00:36:02.660 --> 00:36:06.660 conversion. 28 chapters 00:36:06.660 --> 00:36:10.660 17 times where some sign of miracle performed by an apostle or a disciple 00:36:10.660 --> 00:36:14.660 ended up leading to conversion. 00:36:14.660 --> 00:36:18.660 This is critical for our existence. 00:36:18.660 --> 00:36:22.660 I certainly intend to press 00:36:22.660 --> 00:36:26.660 into this as a church. This is critical 00:36:26.660 --> 00:36:30.660 at this particular phase in our life. More knowledge, more teaching 00:36:30.660 --> 00:36:34.660 just gives us a whole lot of information that 00:36:34.660 --> 00:36:38.660 is good but we have everything we need 00:36:38.660 --> 00:36:42.660 for this present revival. There's nothing more you can teach about revival. 00:36:42.660 --> 00:36:46.660 Ha ha ha 00:36:50.660 --> 00:36:54.660 Signs and wonders are God's witness to His word. 00:36:54.660 --> 00:36:58.660 Signs and wonders are God's witness to His word. I love that. 00:36:58.660 --> 00:37:02.660 Signs and wonders are God's witness to His word. I want to give 00:37:02.660 --> 00:37:06.660 evidence for my word. And so I am 00:37:06.660 --> 00:37:10.660 giving you signs and wonders from me so that they witness 00:37:10.660 --> 00:37:14.660 to the word that I preach. And there's no other passage that 00:37:14.660 --> 00:37:18.660 perhaps explains it better than Mark 16 00:37:18.660 --> 00:37:22.660 verse 20. Mark 16 verse 20 00:37:22.660 --> 00:37:26.660 just sums it up so beautifully. 00:37:26.660 --> 00:37:30.660 Mark 16 verse 20. Then the disciples 00:37:30.660 --> 00:37:34.660 went out and preached everywhere. 00:37:34.660 --> 00:37:38.660 And the Lord worked with them and confirmed His 00:37:38.660 --> 00:37:42.660 word by signs that accompanied it. 00:37:42.660 --> 00:37:46.660 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere and the Lord worked 00:37:46.660 --> 00:37:50.660 with them and confirmed His word by the signs that 00:37:50.660 --> 00:37:54.660 accompanied it. Paul would describe His 00:37:54.660 --> 00:37:58.660 mission as Christ working through Him. I love the phrase 00:37:58.660 --> 00:38:02.660 that he uses in Romans chapter 15, 18 and 19. 00:38:02.660 --> 00:38:06.660 Paul described His mission as Christ working through Him by word 00:38:06.660 --> 00:38:10.660 and deed 00:38:10.660 --> 00:38:14.660 by word and deed. 00:38:14.660 --> 00:38:18.660 And then he goes on to say that's one. In the power 00:38:18.660 --> 00:38:22.660 of signs and wonders 00:38:26.660 --> 00:38:30.660 by the power of the Spirit. 00:38:30.660 --> 00:38:34.660 Beautiful, eh? 00:38:34.660 --> 00:38:38.660 Wouldn't it be awesome if you 00:38:38.660 --> 00:38:42.660 and I as a church could say this? That our mission 00:38:42.660 --> 00:38:46.660 our work, our mission is 00:38:46.660 --> 00:38:50.660 by word and deed. It's not just word 00:38:50.660 --> 00:38:54.660 it's by word and deed. And then 00:38:54.660 --> 00:38:58.660 the word and deed is by the power of 00:38:58.660 --> 00:39:02.660 signs and wonders. And then it is by the power 00:39:02.660 --> 00:39:06.660 of the Spirit. Go to Romans 15, 18 and 19. 00:39:10.660 --> 00:39:14.660 Guys, the reason I'm going over the 00:39:14.660 --> 00:39:18.660 why of signs and wonders is because 00:39:18.660 --> 00:39:22.660 if I don't have the word of God to 00:39:22.660 --> 00:39:26.660 stand on or to testify that this is how it works 00:39:26.660 --> 00:39:30.660 then I don't have anything. Then all I have is wishful thinking. Then all I have 00:39:30.660 --> 00:39:34.660 is I hope this happens. It's a 50-50 thing. Maybe 00:39:34.660 --> 00:39:38.660 God will do it. Maybe He won't. He's sovereign. He can do whatever He 00:39:38.660 --> 00:39:42.660 wants. Now, but once we see a pattern in the 00:39:42.660 --> 00:39:46.660 word that holds consistently, now you 00:39:46.660 --> 00:39:50.660 have something solid to stand on when things work and when 00:39:50.660 --> 00:39:54.660 things don't work. Expectation is not dashed 00:39:54.660 --> 00:39:58.660 when the word is solid. It is when 00:39:58.660 --> 00:40:02.660 the word is not solid or when you are not solid on the word. One or the other. 00:40:02.660 --> 00:40:06.660 When the word is not solid as in you do not have anything to stand on 00:40:06.660 --> 00:40:10.660 or when you are not solid on the word as in it is there but you don't know how to stand 00:40:10.660 --> 00:40:14.660 in it. Then expectations 00:40:14.660 --> 00:40:18.660 flux because when things go well expectations are high. When things don't go well 00:40:18.660 --> 00:40:22.660 you abandon the thought. But once we find a pattern that 00:40:22.660 --> 00:40:26.660 is consistent you know that expectations can always remain on 00:40:26.660 --> 00:40:30.660 a high because there's a pattern in here. 00:40:30.660 --> 00:40:34.660 And so when things don't happen it doesn't be funnel you at all. 00:40:34.660 --> 00:40:38.660 You just go back to the blueprint and say, okay, what do I need to do? Where do I need to 00:40:38.660 --> 00:40:42.660 change? What do I need to adjust? Where do I need to go? 00:40:42.660 --> 00:40:46.660 Romans 15 was 18 and 00:40:46.660 --> 00:40:50.660 19. 00:40:50.660 --> 00:40:54.660 Therefore I 00:40:54.660 --> 00:40:58.660 glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. I will not venture 00:40:58.660 --> 00:41:02.660 to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me 00:41:02.660 --> 00:41:06.660 in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done. 00:41:06.660 --> 00:41:10.660 That's a word indeed. What I have said and done. It's not just 00:41:10.660 --> 00:41:14.660 said. It's said and done. 00:41:14.660 --> 00:41:18.660 By what I have said and done, by the power of 00:41:18.660 --> 00:41:22.660 signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. What I have said and done 00:41:22.660 --> 00:41:26.660 by the power of signs and miracles. What I have 00:41:26.660 --> 00:41:30.660 said and done by the power of signs and miracles. Paul is literally 00:41:30.660 --> 00:41:34.660 saying that listen I said things to you but I just didn't leave it at saying. 00:41:34.660 --> 00:41:38.660 I demonstrated it through the power of signs and miracles. And the 00:41:38.660 --> 00:41:42.660 power of signs and miracles wasn't mine but it came 00:41:42.660 --> 00:41:46.660 through a demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:41:48.660 --> 00:41:52.660 What a beautiful sequence of events man. 00:41:52.660 --> 00:41:56.660 And this pattern is repeated again and again and again. 00:41:56.660 --> 00:42:00.660 As I said earlier, Jesus authenticated 00:42:00.660 --> 00:42:04.660 His messiahship through signs and wonders. 00:42:04.660 --> 00:42:08.660 Go to Matthew 11. The blind receive sight, the lame walk, 00:42:40.660 --> 00:42:44.660 those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised 00:42:44.660 --> 00:42:48.660 and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who does not fall away 00:42:48.660 --> 00:42:52.660 on account of me. So here's a question I just want to ask right off the bat. 00:42:52.660 --> 00:42:56.660 Have you seen any blind that have received sight? 00:42:56.660 --> 00:43:00.660 I've seen partial sight. I've never seen a totally blind man receive sight. I have not. 00:43:00.660 --> 00:43:04.660 Have you seen the lame walk? Yes. It was the first miracle I saw. 00:43:04.660 --> 00:43:08.660 I was in a church in Bahrain and 00:43:08.660 --> 00:43:12.660 Chantel's dad was a pastor then and a Muslim man came into the 00:43:12.660 --> 00:43:16.660 church. Someone had brought him and there was a 00:43:16.660 --> 00:43:20.660 guest speaker and this man came with a crutch and he was lame. 00:43:20.660 --> 00:43:24.660 I used to lead worship and I'm standing there so it was not a second hand account. 00:43:24.660 --> 00:43:28.660 The man came and the preacher prayed for him and then 00:43:28.660 --> 00:43:32.660 gently took his crutch and took it away and told the man to walk. 00:43:32.660 --> 00:43:36.660 The man started walking. It was the first time I'd seen the lame walk. 00:43:36.660 --> 00:43:40.660 Until then I've seen the lame walk a few times. I've seen 00:43:40.660 --> 00:43:44.660 the lame walk. 00:43:44.660 --> 00:43:48.660 Once in a city called Bath in the UK 00:43:48.660 --> 00:43:52.660 I prayed for a man who had a leg 00:43:52.660 --> 00:43:56.660 that was short and he couldn't walk and he started walking. 00:43:56.660 --> 00:44:00.660 My sister was there, my brother-in-law was there, a whole lot of other people were there. 00:44:00.660 --> 00:44:04.660 I've seen the lame walk. I haven't seen the blind receive full sight. 00:44:04.660 --> 00:44:08.660 Just partial sight. Leprosy cured? 00:44:08.660 --> 00:44:12.660 No, I haven't. Skin disease cured? Yes. 00:44:12.660 --> 00:44:16.660 Many times. The deaf hear? 00:44:16.660 --> 00:44:20.660 Oh yes. Dead raised? 00:44:20.660 --> 00:44:24.660 Once. 00:44:24.660 --> 00:44:28.660 Good news reached to the poor? I wish it was happening 00:44:28.660 --> 00:44:32.660 every day through my life but it isn't. 00:44:32.660 --> 00:44:36.660 If I were to have a church that is full and ask the same questions 00:44:36.660 --> 00:44:40.660 many of you would raise your hands. 00:44:40.660 --> 00:44:44.660 Many others would raise their hands. What I had seen happen overnight and I would show those 00:47:16.660 --> 00:47:20.660 pictures and I would show it to many people to see and you could see the difference 00:47:20.660 --> 00:47:24.660 in the picture. When I went back and I found that the child's eyes hadn't recovered 00:47:24.660 --> 00:47:28.660 and the child's eyesight was still bad, I deleted that photograph 00:47:28.660 --> 00:47:32.660 from my phone and I haven't spoken about it since because one of the 00:47:32.660 --> 00:47:36.660 things that happens in Christianity is we pray in faith 00:47:36.660 --> 00:47:40.660 and then use our faith to now presume that everything is fine 00:47:40.660 --> 00:47:44.660 when medically nothing may have changed. And that kind of 00:47:44.660 --> 00:47:48.660 inauthenticity is hurting Christianity because people get 00:47:48.660 --> 00:47:52.660 more and more skeptical. 00:47:52.660 --> 00:47:56.660 I was watching someone pray for someone on TV and they prayed for the person and said your 00:47:56.660 --> 00:48:00.660 pressure has gone down and your diabetes has disappeared and then the person fell and 00:48:00.660 --> 00:48:04.660 the person moved on. And while I'm glad that the person had faith 00:48:04.660 --> 00:48:08.660 to pray for it and perhaps it happened, that is sometimes 00:48:08.660 --> 00:48:12.660 what raises skepticism. 00:48:12.660 --> 00:48:16.660 Our prayer got that 00:48:16.660 --> 00:48:20.660 we have a way to send people 00:48:20.660 --> 00:48:24.660 to priest, to make sure that the leprosy is gone and a sacrifice 00:48:24.660 --> 00:48:28.660 is offered. Because authentic miracles 00:48:28.660 --> 00:48:32.660 can't deny them man. And that's the kind that Jesus wants to do 00:48:32.660 --> 00:48:36.660 because he never did anything not authentic. 00:48:36.660 --> 00:48:40.660 You know I don't think any of us 00:48:40.660 --> 00:48:44.660 are not persuaded that God does miracles, 00:48:44.660 --> 00:48:48.660 signs and wonders. It is just that we are not convinced that it is through us. 00:48:48.660 --> 00:48:52.660 So I remember many years ago when Roland Tan first came to 00:48:52.660 --> 00:48:56.660 Vancouver, I met a man who was in a wheelchair 00:48:56.660 --> 00:49:00.660 and I pushed him to the side of the room 00:49:00.660 --> 00:49:04.660 and I said, I'm going to pray for you. 00:49:04.660 --> 00:49:08.660 And I pushed him for more than a kilometer 00:49:08.660 --> 00:49:12.660 and a half but I didn't have the courage to pray 00:49:12.660 --> 00:49:16.660 for him. But I wanted to take him to Roland because I knew 00:49:16.660 --> 00:49:20.660 God heals, I knew God does miracles, I knew God 00:49:20.660 --> 00:49:24.660 raises people out of wheelchairs. But I wasn't convinced that I could do it 00:49:24.660 --> 00:49:28.660 but because Roland was in town I was taking him to Roland. 00:49:28.660 --> 00:49:32.660 And I think many of us are in that boat 00:49:32.660 --> 00:49:36.660 where we are convinced of miracles as long as we have someone else to take 00:49:36.660 --> 00:49:40.660 people to. But I want us as a church, and when I say 00:49:40.660 --> 00:49:44.660 church I mean anybody and everybody connected to us, I want us as a 00:49:44.660 --> 00:49:48.660 church not as a person or two people 00:49:48.660 --> 00:49:52.660 that has the confidence to walk in 00:49:52.660 --> 00:49:56.660 signs, miracles and wonders. While I don't take away from the fact 00:49:56.660 --> 00:50:00.660 that there are those amongst us that are gifted in the gifts of healings, 00:50:00.660 --> 00:50:04.660 I'm talking about us as a church beginning to operate like this. 00:50:04.660 --> 00:50:08.660 The other thing that really caught me is Jesus wouldn't 00:50:08.660 --> 00:50:12.660 command us to go preach saying the kingdom of God is 00:50:12.660 --> 00:50:16.660 at hand, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. 00:50:16.660 --> 00:50:20.660 He wouldn't command us that if he didn't have intents of backing it. 00:50:20.660 --> 00:50:24.660 That gave me a lot of confidence that okay, if God is saying 00:50:24.660 --> 00:50:28.660 listen, go preach the good news, say that the kingdom of God is at hand, 00:50:28.660 --> 00:50:32.660 heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons, 00:50:32.660 --> 00:50:36.660 all ways of restoring 00:50:36.660 --> 00:50:40.660 order back to the earth like he had so beautifully constructed it, 00:50:40.660 --> 00:50:44.660 all ending brokenness. If he's telling me to go and do it, then I expect him to 00:50:44.660 --> 00:50:48.660 back me up because he's giving a command. Really? He'd give me a command to do something and not 00:50:48.660 --> 00:50:52.660 back me up in it? 00:50:52.660 --> 00:50:56.660 I just don't see that Jesus. 00:50:56.660 --> 00:51:00.660 When has he ever commanded something and said, 00:51:00.660 --> 00:51:04.660 go now and do thus and I will be with you to the ends of the ages? 00:51:04.660 --> 00:51:08.660 Not really. He doesn't do that, he backs you up. 00:51:08.660 --> 00:51:12.660 Let me end. 00:51:12.660 --> 00:51:16.660 Tomorrow we'll talk about the how. You read about that in 2 Corinthians 12.12. 00:51:50.660 --> 00:51:54.660 That's often used by people saying, all these 00:51:54.660 --> 00:51:58.660 points you made were specific commands given to apostles. 00:51:58.660 --> 00:52:02.660 Paul talks about it in 2 Corinthians 12.12 where he says that 00:52:02.660 --> 00:52:06.660 I'm not inferior to any of these super apostles. The things that mark an 00:52:06.660 --> 00:52:10.660 apostle, signs, wonders and miracles, were done among you with great perseverance. 00:52:10.660 --> 00:52:14.660 He says that in 2 Corinthians 12.12. So it's easy to then conclude 00:52:14.660 --> 00:52:18.660 that since we are not called to be apostles, this is not exactly 00:52:18.660 --> 00:52:22.660 acapetit. But then what would you say about the 70 in Luke 00:52:22.660 --> 00:52:26.660 10 verse 9? 00:52:26.660 --> 00:52:30.660 What would you say about the 70? The 70 were not apostles. They were sent out. 00:52:30.660 --> 00:52:34.660 But isn't the church exactly supposed to do that? 00:52:34.660 --> 00:52:38.660 Be sent out? No, but Jesus called the 70. 00:52:38.660 --> 00:52:42.660 So are you saying Jesus hasn't called you to do things like this? 00:52:42.660 --> 00:52:46.660 By the way, what do you do with Isaiah 61? 00:52:46.660 --> 00:52:50.660 The Spirit of the Lord has upon me, 00:52:50.660 --> 00:52:54.660 for he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor, 00:52:54.660 --> 00:52:58.660 to open the eyes of the blind, to set the captives free, to release those that are in bondage. 00:52:58.660 --> 00:53:02.660 What do you do with that? 00:53:02.660 --> 00:53:06.660 Luke 10 verse 9. 00:53:06.660 --> 00:53:10.660 Not 9, Luke 10 verse 9. 00:53:10.660 --> 00:53:14.660 It's basically the 70. Where is it? 00:53:14.660 --> 00:53:18.660 Yeah, it should be there. 00:53:18.660 --> 00:53:22.660 After that the Lord appointed 72 others and sent them two by two ahead of 00:53:22.660 --> 00:53:26.660 him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them the harvest is 00:53:26.660 --> 00:53:30.660 plentiful. I'm sending you out 00:53:30.660 --> 00:53:34.660 like lambs among wolves. And then he goes on to say in verse 9, 00:53:34.660 --> 00:53:38.660 Heal the sick who are there. Tell them the kingdom of God is near. 00:53:38.660 --> 00:53:42.660 And so in the case of the 70, he had no problem sending 00:53:42.660 --> 00:53:46.660 them. So it was not just the apostles. What about Stephen? 00:53:46.660 --> 00:53:50.660 In Acts chapter 6 verse 8. Stephen, Acts chapter 6 verse 8. 00:53:50.660 --> 00:53:54.660 He wasn't an apostle. He was a deacon but full of the Holy Spirit. 00:53:54.660 --> 00:53:58.660 Acts chapter 6 verse 8. 00:53:58.660 --> 00:54:02.660 Now Stephen was a man full of God's grace and power 00:54:02.660 --> 00:54:06.660 and he did great wonders and miraculous signs amongst the people. 00:54:06.660 --> 00:54:10.660 What about the church in Galatia? 00:54:10.660 --> 00:54:14.660 Go to Galatians chapter 3 verse 5. I love it. 00:54:14.660 --> 00:54:18.660 We go from people to a whole blooming church. Galatians chapter 3 verse 5. 00:54:26.660 --> 00:54:30.660 He's actually rebuking them but in the process of the rebuke you see 00:54:30.660 --> 00:54:34.660 something that the church actually had. Verse 4 and 5. 00:54:34.660 --> 00:54:38.660 Have you suffered so much for nothing? If it really was for nothing, does God give you 00:54:38.660 --> 00:54:42.660 miracles among you because you observe the law or because you believe what you heard? 00:54:42.660 --> 00:54:46.660 That was a church that was quite accustomed to miracles amongst them. 00:54:46.660 --> 00:54:50.660 And through them. What about the 00:54:50.660 --> 00:54:54.660 gift of healing in 1 Corinthians 12.9? Isn't that given to 00:54:54.660 --> 00:54:58.660 the church at large? Different people, different gifts. 00:54:58.660 --> 00:55:02.660 But one of the gifts given is the gift of healing. 1 Corinthians 12.9. 00:55:02.660 --> 00:55:06.660 Where it says to one is given through the spirit the message of wisdom 00:55:06.660 --> 00:55:10.660 to another the message of knowledge by the same spirit to another the 00:55:10.660 --> 00:55:14.660 faith by the same spirit to another gifts of healing 00:55:14.660 --> 00:55:18.660 by that one spirit to another miraculous powers 00:55:18.660 --> 00:55:22.660 gifts of healing and miraculous powers 00:55:22.660 --> 00:55:26.660 present in the church given by the spirit as he desires. 00:55:26.660 --> 00:55:30.660 So we can't confirm that the 00:55:30.660 --> 00:55:34.660 So we can't confine this to oh this was only to the 00:55:34.660 --> 00:55:38.660 apostles. Naturally the apostles were the one he was training so that's 00:55:38.660 --> 00:55:42.660 where he'll start. Unfortunately I know apostles who said this was 00:55:42.660 --> 00:55:46.660 the commission given to them that Matthew 10 is only for apostles. 00:55:46.660 --> 00:55:50.660 I just, what a way to undo the rest of the church. 00:55:50.660 --> 00:55:54.660 So we don't have clergy lately, now we have apostles and the rest. 00:55:54.660 --> 00:55:58.660 The other argument that is 00:55:58.660 --> 00:56:02.660 very commonly heard is 00:56:02.660 --> 00:56:06.660 and these are arguments we make so that we don't have to believe 00:56:06.660 --> 00:56:10.660 for signs, miracles and wonders or because we have come to a place where we are no longer 00:56:10.660 --> 00:56:14.660 we don't think the Holy Spirit uses 00:56:14.660 --> 00:56:18.660 his gifts as in cessationists. So another argument that's often used is 00:56:18.660 --> 00:56:22.660 only a wicked and adulterous generation looks for signs. 00:56:22.660 --> 00:56:26.660 Matthew 16 verse 4, only a wicked and adulterous generation looks for signs. 00:56:26.660 --> 00:56:30.660 And the context is the Pharisees and Sadducees come to Jesus 00:56:30.660 --> 00:56:34.660 and they say to him, give us evidence, we want to test you. Give us 00:56:34.660 --> 00:56:38.660 evidence to show that you are who you say you are. And it is in that context 00:56:38.660 --> 00:56:42.660 that Jesus says only a wicked and adulterous generation seeks 00:56:42.660 --> 00:56:46.660 signs. And so yeah, it is true. If 00:56:46.660 --> 00:56:50.660 you are demanding more evidence because 00:56:50.660 --> 00:56:54.660 your heart is resistant and you are unbelieving, yes 00:56:54.660 --> 00:56:58.660 Jesus is not going to jump off a steeple for you 00:56:58.660 --> 00:57:02.660 nor am I. 00:57:02.660 --> 00:57:06.660 That is when a wicked and adulterous generation asks for signs. 00:57:06.660 --> 00:57:10.660 If your Jesus can't do this then I don't believe in. Jesus will still do it for you 00:57:10.660 --> 00:57:14.660 because you are compassionate but don't try it a second time. 00:57:14.660 --> 00:57:18.660 Guys, 00:57:18.660 --> 00:57:22.660 we live in a fallen world where 00:57:22.660 --> 00:57:26.660 suffering is there, pain is there, tears are there, death will continue 00:57:26.660 --> 00:57:30.660 till Revelation 21,4. Revelation 21,4 is a consummation 00:57:30.660 --> 00:57:34.660 but Jesus is working towards it. And one of the reasons he has a 00:57:34.660 --> 00:57:38.660 church here on earth is so that he has a people through whom he can work towards it. 00:57:38.660 --> 00:57:42.660 My God, man, what's one of the reasons the church exists? In the middle of decaying 00:57:42.660 --> 00:57:46.660 earth, he's set apart for himself a colony of people 00:57:46.660 --> 00:57:50.660 in whose midst he dwells and through whose midst he wants to show 00:57:50.660 --> 00:57:54.660 that a kingdom that was supposed to be kept for the end has broken in right now 00:57:54.660 --> 00:57:58.660 and through this people he wants to show that I'm already restoring. 00:57:58.660 --> 00:58:02.660 That's what he's doing. And if the people that he's in the midst of 00:58:02.660 --> 00:58:06.660 say that, nah, nah, nah, this is all for the future 00:58:06.660 --> 00:58:10.660 then it's a shame, man. 00:58:10.660 --> 00:58:14.660 Yes, there will come a time in Revelation 21,4 00:58:14.660 --> 00:58:18.660 where it says that there will be, he will wipe every 00:58:18.660 --> 00:58:22.660 tear from their eyes, there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain 00:58:22.660 --> 00:58:26.660 for the old aura of things has passed away. 00:58:26.660 --> 00:58:30.660 Right now, it is passing away. 00:58:30.660 --> 00:58:34.660 It has not passed away fully but it is passing away. Why? 00:58:34.660 --> 00:58:38.660 Because the day Jesus landed on earth, he was 00:58:38.660 --> 00:58:42.660 a king of the world, because the day Jesus landed on earth and inaugurated the kingdom 00:58:42.660 --> 00:58:46.660 and he opened the scroll and read out of it, a kingdom from the future 00:58:46.660 --> 00:58:50.660 broke into the present and since then, restoration has begun. 00:58:50.660 --> 00:58:54.660 We are the sample to the earth 00:58:54.660 --> 00:58:58.660 saying taste and see, this is what it looks like. Taste and see 00:58:58.660 --> 00:59:02.660 death becomes life. Taste and see, sickness becomes healing. Taste and see 00:59:10.660 --> 00:59:14.660 and so sometimes it doesn't matter 00:59:14.660 --> 00:59:18.660 that you may be in the midst of suffering because even though 00:59:18.660 --> 00:59:22.660 you are suffering, signs will flow through you for others. 00:59:22.660 --> 00:59:26.660 If you read Paul's 00:59:26.660 --> 00:59:30.660 condition as he does miracle signs and wonders, you read about 00:59:30.660 --> 00:59:34.660 what's happening to him in 2 Corinthians 6, at times he says 00:59:34.660 --> 00:59:38.660 wild negros are being attacked by wild beasts. 00:59:38.660 --> 00:59:42.660 He says that famous song, right? 00:59:42.660 --> 00:59:46.660 Persecuted, not abandoned, crushed 00:59:46.660 --> 00:59:50.660 but not destroyed and so on. In the midst 00:59:50.660 --> 00:59:54.660 of that, this man is flowing in signs, miracles and wonders. 00:59:54.660 --> 00:59:58.660 Because we have a tendency to say, oh this world is a world of suffering 00:59:58.660 --> 01:00:02.660 we just need to take this suffering and we shouldn't expect signs and miracles and wonders 01:00:02.660 --> 01:00:06.660 because it's too triumphalistic or victorious. I'm not preaching this to 01:00:06.660 --> 01:00:10.660 Axemanians, I'm preaching this to many who may think like this. 01:00:10.660 --> 01:00:14.660 But in the midst of your suffering, let 01:00:14.660 --> 01:00:18.660 healing, miracles, signs and wonders flow through you for the sake of someone else. 01:00:22.660 --> 01:00:26.660 In 1999 when I was in Bahrain and my dad was dying 01:00:26.660 --> 01:00:30.660 every evening I would go and preach in the church 01:00:30.660 --> 01:00:34.660 and signs and wonders would happen. Healings would happen like 01:00:34.660 --> 01:00:38.660 it was fascinating how many healings were happening. I'd go 01:00:38.660 --> 01:00:42.660 back to the hospital and then sit the night with my dad because he was in a coma. 01:00:42.660 --> 01:00:46.660 And I'd scratch my head thinking how come he's in a coma 01:00:46.660 --> 01:00:50.660 while others are getting healed. And then one night I go and he dies. 01:00:50.660 --> 01:00:54.660 And now he's dead. And the next day I was supposed to do the meeting and I went back to the meeting. 01:00:54.660 --> 01:00:58.660 Not some stoic, heroic, Christian endeavor. 01:00:58.660 --> 01:01:02.660 It was the most natural thing to do. My dad is dead. 01:01:02.660 --> 01:01:06.660 I've wept for him for a while. Go for this meeting, finish the meeting. Guess what's happening in the meeting? 01:01:06.660 --> 01:01:10.660 Again signs and wonders are flowing. How do I feel in my heart? Hurt. 01:01:10.660 --> 01:01:14.660 How do I feel in my heart? Even bitter with God. How does God 01:01:14.660 --> 01:01:18.660 feel? Hey, since you're here I might as well use you to let 01:01:18.660 --> 01:01:22.660 continue the flow of signs, miracles and wonders so that people 01:01:22.660 --> 01:01:26.660 that are gathered here can get a taste of what the kingdom of God that has broken 01:01:26.660 --> 01:01:30.660 into the earth looks like right now even though you may be going through suffering. 01:01:30.660 --> 01:01:34.660 So please guys, let's not think that our sufferings are going to stop Jesus 01:01:34.660 --> 01:01:38.660 from using us in the midst of our suffering to bring healing to others. 01:01:44.660 --> 01:01:48.660 That's the why.
