WEBVTT NOTE Podcast: Acts 29 Vancouver Episode: Renew Your Mind Part1 Publishing Date: 2017-03-12T06:00:44-07:00 Podcast URL: https://acts29.ca Episode URL: https://acts29.ca/renew-your-mind-part1/ 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.000 So we've been talking about the Kingdom of God and then about three weeks ago started on Kingdom Ethics 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:10.000 and we continue with that. 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:14.000 Here's what King Jesus is saying. 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:16.000 Here's what King Jesus is saying. 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:18.000 He's saying, and He is actually a King. 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:23.000 The whole idea of Messiah, Messiah means anointed one, as in the anointed King. 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:26.000 That's what it means. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:30.000 There is actually just one King in the entire world. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:33.000 And it's Him. 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:38.000 And so, here's what He's saying. 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:46.000 He's saying, I want my reign or my governing influence that is really present here in this world 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000 to break through your life into other lives. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:51.000 That's what He's saying. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:57.000 That most people are waiting for a kingdom that they think will come in the future. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:02.000 And yet Jesus is saying, I already came 2000 years ago. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.000 I am alive. I'm here now. 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:10.000 And therefore my reign or my governing influence has already started. 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:12.000 Has already started. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.000 This is why people get healed. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:16.000 This is why demons get cast out. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 This is why bodies, minds, emotions get healed. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000 This is why fish multiply. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:26.000 This is why everything that Jesus did when He was on the earth still happens. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.000 This is why Isaiah 61 is a reality. 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:31.000 To proclaim the good news to the poor. 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.000 To open blind eyes. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:35.000 To set captives free. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:41.000 All this happens because the governing influence of the King of the universe is present, 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:46.000 not in the future, nor in the past in the Bible, but presently. 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:52.000 And He says, I want this governing influence to break into other people's lives. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.000 And I want to use you for that. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 That's what He's saying. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:04.000 But He says, if you want to be a good conductor of my reign through you, 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:07.000 then here is what you need to become. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:13.000 I mean, stick a pencil into one of these sockets on the wall and nothing happens. 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:17.000 Stick a guitar string into it and something happens. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:19.000 Why? Because one is a good conductor, one is not. 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:21.000 Don't try this at home. 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:25.000 But one is a good conductor, one is not. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:27.000 And that's basically what God is saying. 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:33.000 Hey, if you want my governing influence to break through your life into other lives around you, 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:37.000 then here is how you can become a good conductor. 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:42.000 And then He starts with the Beatitude saying, blessed are the poor in spirit. 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:44.000 Blessed are the meek. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:49.000 And it's basically a self-portrait that He's presenting saying, this is who I am. 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:55.000 Become this way and watch how my governing influence breaks through you into the world. 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:58.000 And so we've covered, I think, four or five of them. 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:01.000 And today we begin with blessed are the poor in spirit. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:04.000 And today we begin with blessed are the pure for they shall see God. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.000 Blessed are the pure for they shall see God. 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 Any questions on that before we go on? 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.000 He's basically saying, Jacob, become like me. 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.000 And then He's saying, oh, you don't know how. 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:15.000 Let me tell you how. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:23.000 And then He begins to talk about blessed are those that are transparent, dependent, childlike in their helplessness, 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:25.000 for theirs is the kingdom of God. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:36.000 Blessed are those that are not grabby, pushy, type A, manipulative, driven, but meek. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:39.000 For they shall inherit everything. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:45.000 But those that are pushy, grabby, manipulative, type A driven will inherit everything they strive for. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:50.000 But the meek, the ones who have strength that is submitted to God, 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.000 are willing to take occasional abuse, will inherit the earth. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.000 Blessed are those that hunger and thirst after righteousness, 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:11.000 as in guys who are desperate for right relationship with God, with each other, with creation, and with themselves. 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:17.000 People who are in right relationship, at the end of the day, righteousness is simply one word, relationship. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:18.000 That's it. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:25.000 Christianity makes righteousness do's and don'ts, exactly like the Pharisees did. 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:28.000 God says righteousness is relationship. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:35.000 Blessed are they who hunger after right relationship with God, right relationship with others, 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:42.000 right relationship with creation, and right relationship with themselves, for they shall be satisfied. 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:47.000 For they shall be satisfied, and they are. 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:51.000 And then what is the fourth one? 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.000 Someone help me? 00:04:56.000 --> 00:05:02.000 Blessed are the poor, blessed are the meek, blessed are those who hunger and thirst, blessed are those that mourn. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:10.000 As in the same kind of mourning that Jesus did when he stood on that hill and looked down on Jerusalem and said, 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:15.000 Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, I wish I could gather you like a hen gathers its chicks. 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:23.000 Or like a lot sitting at the gates of Sodom, agonizing over the condition of Sodom, which was soon to be destroyed. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000 Blessed are those that lament. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:37.000 Hey, some of you experience this, when you have a son or a daughter who knows what is right and walks wrong. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:43.000 There is a lament in a parent's heart that is so intense that nobody else can feel it. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:51.000 I've seen it in parents where you know that you've done everything you can and they begin to walk wayward. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:57.000 And there is a cry that begins to rise because you're helpless and yet everything in you wants to do something to say, 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:00.000 Come back and you will be alright. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.000 It's that kind of a cry, man. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:05.000 And then we come to this part. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.000 Right relationship is critical. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:12.000 God is not too bothered when you break a law. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:16.000 He is really bothered when you violate relationship. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:22.000 And the crazy thing is if you don't violate relationship, you won't break the law. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:29.000 If I will not violate my relationship with Mike, I will not do anything to harm him or break any of the Ten Commandments. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 Like I said last time, look at the Ten Commandments. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 It's only about relationship. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:36.000 It starts with, I am your God. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.000 And then it starts with, here's your relationship with God, the first four. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 The next six are your relationship with people. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 Get the relationship right. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:45.000 You won't steal. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:48.000 You won't covet someone else's wife or his donkey or his car. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:49.000 You won't kill. 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:50.000 You won't be angry. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:52.000 Right relationship. 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:53.000 Critical. 00:06:53.000 --> 00:07:00.000 What happens with us is we are mildly dissatisfied with broken relationships. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.000 The only relationship we like keeping intact is the one with God. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:08.000 And we do that through repentance, forgiveness, cleansing and stuff like that. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:13.000 But we don't care too much for the other three relationships. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:18.000 With self, with friends, with creation. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.000 We don't. 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:24.000 And all four are critical to God. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:27.000 Today we start with blessed other... 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:28.000 What's the time? 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:32.000 We'll go by that clock. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:37.000 For once, time is on my side. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 Blessed are the pure, for they shall see God. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.000 Blessed are the pure, Matthew 5, 8. 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000 Blessed are the pure, for they shall see God. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 And we'll only do part one of it, because there are two parts. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:49.000 Today we only do one part. 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.000 Blessed are the pure, for they shall see God. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:53.000 Guys, is it even possible? 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:56.000 I mean, is it even possible, one, to see God? 00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:00.000 And what does God even mean by, you'll see me? 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:03.000 And then is it even possible to be pure? 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000 1 Peter 1, 15, 16. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.000 Hey, here's the thing, Jesus will never ask of me 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.000 anything that's not possible. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:52.000 You've got to believe that. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:55.000 Jesus will never ask of me anything that's not possible. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:57.000 He never does that. 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:00.000 He is so real that there's nothing impractical, 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:02.000 super spiritual. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:04.000 He's very real. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:06.000 He'd never ask anything of me that's not possible. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:09.000 And it says in 1 Peter 1, 15 and 16, 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 it actually says, 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:13.000 As he who called you is holy, 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:16.000 you also be holy in all your conduct. 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:19.000 As he who called you is holy, 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:22.000 you also be holy in all your conduct. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:23.000 It's odd, eh? 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.000 He doesn't say you also be holy. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.000 He says you also be holy in all your conduct. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000 Guys, here's the truth. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:31.000 Like it or not, 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:32.000 if you're a Christian, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 you have already been made holy. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000 There's nothing more you can do. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.000 You didn't get holy because you prayed a prayer. 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.000 You didn't get holy because you got baptized. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:45.000 You didn't get holy because you belong to this fine church. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.000 You didn't get holy because you gave an offering. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:51.000 You became holy because the Holy One of God now lives in you. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.000 You cannot get holier. 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:59.000 But here's what he's saying. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:01.000 Be holy in your conduct. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:05.000 And therein lies our problem, eh? 00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:08.000 How do you walk pure and maintain pure conduct? 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:10.000 It's almost impossible, it would look like. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000 And yet that's what God is asking. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:19.000 So let's look at some verses. 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:25.000 You might have to flip your Bible or phone quite a lot today. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:29.000 So the first one, guys, let's go to Ephesians 4. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:31.000 Ephesians 4. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:35.000 Ephesians 4. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:38.000 Ephesians 4. 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000 Okay. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:55.000 Here's what it says, Ephesians 4. 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.000 Verse 22. 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:03.000 Verse 22, where is it? 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:05.000 Yeah. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:09.000 It says, 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:13.000 You were taught with regard to your former way of life 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:15.000 to put off your old self, 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:18.000 which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:20.000 to be made new in the attitude of your mind, 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:22.000 and to put on the new self, 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:25.000 created to be like God into righteousness and holiness. 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 Sounds terribly complicated. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:28.000 So here's what Paul is saying. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:38.000 Hey guys, put off your old self that is corrupted. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 That's what he's saying. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.000 Another word for old self is old self. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:44.000 Some versions use old man. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:46.000 So that's the first statement he makes. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:48.000 Put off your old self, 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 or old man, 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:52.000 which is corrupted. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:54.000 But here's the problem, guys. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:55.000 Not problem. Look at this. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:57.000 Go to Romans 6.6. 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:59.000 Romans 6.6. 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:01.000 Romans 6.6. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:02.000 So Ephesians 4.22 says, 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:04.000 Put off your old self, 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:06.000 that is corrupted. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:08.000 Put off your old self, 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.000 that is corrupted. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:12.000 Now go to Romans 6.6. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.000 Look at what it says there. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:16.000 Romans 6.6 says, 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:20.000 For we know that our old self was crucified with him. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:30.000 So, for we know that our old self was crucified with him. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:38.000 So, for we know that our old self was crucified with him. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:46.000 For we know that our old self was crucified with him. 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:48.000 So Paul in Ephesians says, 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:50.000 Put off your old self, 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:51.000 that is corrupted. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:52.000 But he's already said in Romans, 00:12:52.000 --> 00:13:02.000 For you know that your old self was crucified. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Here's the thing. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:12.000 This is who I think I am. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:14.000 Here's how I think of myself. 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:16.000 How you think of yourself. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.000 You are continuously thinking that you have an old nature that is corrupted, 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:25.000 that keeps coming up again and again and again and again and again. 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:27.000 This is how we naturally think. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:29.000 Every time you lie, you think to yourself, 00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:31.000 There I go lying again. 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000 Every time you look at porn, 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:34.000 you think to yourself, 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:35.000 There I go watching porn again. 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:41.000 Every time you violate something that you know is good and true, 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:42.000 you think to yourself, 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.000 There I go again. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:48.000 And so this is where almost all Christians live. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.000 Continuously putting off an old self that is corrupted. 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:52.000 But our problem is, 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:54.000 We don't know this bit. 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:58.000 That it has already been put to death. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.000 It has already been put to death. 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:05.000 That this is not your true self. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.000 Let's look at the other side and then it will begin to make more sense. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:17.000 Go to Ephesians 4.24. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:19.000 Here's what it says. 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:24.000 Put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:30.000 Put on the new self. 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:52.000 Put on the new self created in the likeness of God in righteousness and holiness. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:55.000 Crazier. 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:57.000 This is how we think. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:58.000 This is what has happened. 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:04.000 And this is what God says we should now be. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:05.000 Look at what it's saying. 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:07.000 Put on the new self created in the likeness of God. 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:09.000 Guys, if you've given your life to Jesus Christ, 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:11.000 Know without a shadow of a doubt, 00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:14.000 and this is very hard for the mind to comprehend. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:24.000 Know without a shadow of a doubt that the real you that God deals with is created in his likeness. 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:31.000 When God relates to you, he's not relating to this because he knows this happened. 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:38.000 When God deals with you, he's always dealing with you like this. 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:42.000 I know it's hard to actually believe this. 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:44.000 Go ahead. 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:46.000 I'll come to that. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:49.000 Yeah. 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:57.000 You know, it's the Holy Spirit in us who practices God's truth, right? 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.000 Kind of. We'll get there. 00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:01.000 Romans chapter 13 verse 14. 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:04.000 Romans 13, 14. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:08.000 Romans 13, 14. 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:10.000 Says kind of the same thing. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.000 Clothe yourself. 00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:26.000 Or some versions like ESV say, put on the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:28.000 Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:29.000 Romans 13, 14. 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:32.000 Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:35.000 Guys, I might have to go over this a few times. 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:37.000 We're not finished today, but that's no big deal. 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:41.000 It's best to not finish. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.000 This is where all of us live. 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:46.000 I'm really struggling. 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:54.000 I have had this situation with lying, with cheating, with porn, with bad thoughts, with self-hatred, with fear. 00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:56.000 This is where I continuously live. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:58.000 I've been failing. 00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:59.000 I'm inadequate. 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:00.000 This is where I live. 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:01.000 I've been struggling. 00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:06.000 But I'm trying to put off my old self, my old nature, or my old man. 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:08.000 This is what we continuously say. 00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:14.000 While Paul is actually saying, hey, by the way, while you're struggling with it, know that it's already dead. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:15.000 Because it's crucified. 00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:18.000 So that the body of sin may be destroyed. 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:19.000 That's what he's saying. 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:23.000 And on the other hand, here's what's actually our true condition. 00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:28.000 Put on the new self created in the likeness of God in righteousness and holiness. 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:29.000 Put on the new self. 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:31.000 As in, what is the new self?
