00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000
Really?

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:08.000
Ah, okay.

00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:19.000
Okay, we go back to, am I good?

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:24.000
Okay, we go back to what we stopped talking about.

00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:32.000
I don't know whether it's part three or part four, I'm not sure, but we were talking about it a month ago.

00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:34.000
I felt it was time to revisit it.

00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:37.000
So continue with Prosperity Gospel.

00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:44.000
I mean, the name sounds so wrong because we're not promoting Prosperity Gospel.

00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:51.000
We are trying to establish what God's thought is on prosperity and how he sees it.

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.000
So that's what we are trying to do.

00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:13.000
So if you haven't heard part one and part two, please go listen to it because it's one of the most life-changing teachings you can get on money and God's thoughts on money and how you and I should handle money.

00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.000
It's very exhaustive and I don't know whether this is the last part, there might be more.

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:21.000
So let's go to Matthew 6, verse 20 to 33.

00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:23.000
Matthew 6, verse 20 to 33.

00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:30.000
I'll read some of it from the NIV and some of it from the message.

00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:31.000
So I'm starting with the message.

00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:34.000
Matthew 6, 19 onwards.

00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:35.000
Matthew 6, 19.

00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:45.000
Don't hoard treasures down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust, or worse, stolen by burglars.

00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.000
Remember when Jesus is saying this, they didn't have banking systems.

00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:50.000
They didn't have crypto.

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:55.000
Everything was kept at home or everything was goods.

00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000
So either goods or hard currency.

00:01:58.000 --> 00:01:59.000
So everything was kept at home.

00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:04.000
So there was always the possibility that treasures kept at home could be stolen.

00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:05.000
It could be damaged.

00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:06.000
It could decay.

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000
So we can't forget that context of it when Jesus is talking about it.

00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:18.000
So don't hoard treasures down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust, or worse, stolen by burglars.

00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:22.000
Not burglars, burglars.

00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:31.000
I see burglars everywhere.

00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:33.000
Stockpile treasure in heaven.

00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:39.000
Stockpile treasure in heaven where it's safe from moths and rust and burglars.

00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:40.000
It's obvious, isn't it?

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:46.000
The place where your treasure is is the place you will most want to be and end up being.

00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000
It's obvious, isn't it?

00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:54.000
The place where your treasure is is the place you will most want to be and end up being.

00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000
Your eyes are windows into your body.

00:02:56.000 --> 00:03:02.000
If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body lights up with light.

00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:08.000
If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar.

00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000
If you pull the blinds on your window, what a dark life you will have.

00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000
You can't worship two gods at once.

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.000
Loving one god, you'll end up hating the other.

00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:21.000
Adoration of one feeds contempt for the other.

00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:25.000
You can't worship God and money both.

00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:28.000
Let me shift to an IV.

00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:35.000
Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, what you will drink, about your body, what you will wear.

00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:40.000
It's not life more than food and body and the body more than clothes.

00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:41.000
Look at the birds of the air.

00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:47.000
They do not sow nor reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them.

00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:49.000
This is Jesus speaking, eh?

00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:53.000
This is what you will not hear in stewardship classes.

00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:57.000
Look at the birds of the air.

00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:03.000
They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them.

00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:06.000
Are you not much more valuable than they?

00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:10.000
Can any of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?

00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:14.000
And why do you worry about clothes?

00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.000
See how the flowers of the field grow.

00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.000
They do not labor or spin.

00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:21.000
When Jesus is talking about clothes, those were the important things at that time.

00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:23.000
What you wear, where you live, what you eat.

00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.000
For us, it's gotten more complicated.

00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.000
So just because you may not be worried about your clothes doesn't mean this isn't speaking to you.

00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:31.000
Yeah?

00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:35.000
Because very few people at Act 29 are worried about their clothes.

00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.000
Hmm.

00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:41.000
So...

00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.000
No, I saw this gentleman walking because he was a pastor.

00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:56.000
And I looked at him and I looked at you and I thought, hmm.

00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:59.000
Yeah.

00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:01.000
So do not worry about your clothes.

00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:03.000
See how the flowers of the field grow.

00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:04.000
They do not labor or spin.

00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:09.000
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:14.000
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:18.000
will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?

00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:22.000
So do not worry saying, what shall we eat, what shall we drink, what shall we wear?

00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.000
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly father knows that you need them.

00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.000
But seek first the kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:35.000
Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.000
Each day has enough trouble of its own.

00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000
These are Jesus' words.

00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.000
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000
Each day has enough trouble of its own.

00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:47.000
Yeah?

00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:51.000
So that's the passage we'll be borrowing from as we talk about this.

00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:55.000
So basically what it outlines is a disciple's attitude.

00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000
A disciple's attitude to material possession.

00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:03.000
A disciple's attitude to material possession.

00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:07.000
That's what it's outlining.

00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:13.000
So this word is important here because it's not a Christian's attitude.

00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:15.000
It's a disciple's attitude.

00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.000
A Christian's attitude and a disciple's attitude will be different, guys.

00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:21.000
A Christian's attitude.

00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:27.000
You know, it's almost impossible for materialism and capitalism not to clash with the kingdom at some point.

00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000
There will be conflict.

00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:33.000
It's almost impossible for them to walk together.

00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:35.000
So I'm not talking about a Christian's attitude to money.

00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.000
I'm talking about a disciple's attitude to money.

00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:46.000
So make that distinction as we go around because you'll find today that many times we are Christian, we're not necessarily disciples.

00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:48.000
There is a distinction.

00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:53.000
And in our lives we'll find that on many occasions that we are Christian, but we are not disciples.

00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:58.000
In many different areas you'll find that.

00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:04.000
So a disciple's attitude to material possession is what we are talking about.

00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.000
So what is Jesus' expectation?

00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:11.000
Here are Jesus' expectations of a disciple.

00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:19.000
One, he expects them to be subjects, to be subjects of God's kingdom, of God's kingship.

00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:23.000
He expects them to be subjects of God's kingship.

00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:25.000
Every word here is so important.

00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:26.000
Subject.

00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:27.000
Not even citizen.

00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:28.000
Subject.

00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:33.000
It's slightly above slave.

00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.000
We love being sons and daughters of God.

00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:40.000
We hate being slaves and subjects and servants of God because it changes everything.

00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.000
But we are supposed to be both.

00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:48.000
So one of the things he's saying is if you're a disciple, Jacob, then I have certain expectations.

00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:52.000
And one of my expectations is that you'll be subject to my kingship.

00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:55.000
Subject to my kingship.

00:07:55.000 --> 00:08:02.000
Even to break that down is so difficult because we don't live in a monarchy.

00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:04.000
So we don't understand.

00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:06.000
You're subject to kingship.

00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.000
If I say that women cannot drive, then women will not drive.

00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:14.000
If I say that men cannot wear shoes, men will not wear shoes.

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.000
I was in a kingdom, not in the Middle East.

00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:22.000
I was in a kingdom some time ago where the king declared that you will not eat meat.

00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:28.000
I just happened to land up there when the king declared that.

00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:33.000
All I had for four days was vegetables.

00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.000
Yeah.

00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:41.000
And then I remember in the same kingdom he declared that men cannot wear pants.

00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.000
If you are a citizen, you cannot wear pants.

00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000
You think I'm kidding? I'm not kidding.

00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:50.000
So men can't wear pants. So all the men came there. They weren't wearing pants.

00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:52.000
So what were they wearing? They had to wear long robes.

00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.000
Our taxi driver had pants on.

00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:59.000
And the cops would come and look into the taxi to see if he had pants on underneath.

00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:04.000
And so he would roll up his pants right till here when he'd see cops coming.

00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:09.000
I'm not sustaining stories, but the point is this, that if you are subject to kingship,

00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:16.000
then you do not have a choice in this matter.

00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:21.000
We don't think like that because we live in amazing democracies, right?

00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:23.000
We don't think like this.

00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:26.000
So that's an expectation he has.

00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:28.000
I pray God that this hits us really hard.

00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:32.000
Last week I was preaching. I was preaching to myself.

00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000
This is what was required. I cannot delay obedience.

00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000
This week I'm preaching. I'm again preaching to myself.

00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:43.000
I hope it hits you and hits me.

00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:45.000
Subject to God's kingship.

00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:59.000
Next one. He has an expectation that you will prioritize spiritual allegiance

00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:08.000
to material security.

00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:14.000
That you will prioritize it where there is just no contention, no struggle,

00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:21.000
no should I, should I not. It is an easy choice.

00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:25.000
Do you prioritize it over material security?

00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:30.000
Yeah. Prioritize spiritual allegiance over material security.

00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:38.000
Over material security.

00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.000
To prioritize it. So there's never a struggle.

00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.000
That's what happens with priority.

00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:47.000
If I prioritize, nothing is a struggle.

00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:51.000
Because I prioritized it.

00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000
This is his expectation.

00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:59.000
Another expectation that the assurance of his goodness,

00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:14.000
the assurance of his goodness is enough for your cares

00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:21.000
and material needs being taken care of.

00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:23.000
I know enough is spelled wrong.

00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:29.000
The assurance of his goodness is enough for your cares

00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:31.000
and material needs being taken care of.

00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:37.000
That there is an expectation that Jacob, I'm your father. I am good.

00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.000
I know what you need before you even know it.

00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:44.000
I provide before you ask for it.

00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.000
You must be assured of my goodness and stop chasing after,

00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:53.000
even wasting time praying sometimes for the things that I know you need

00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:57.000
and as a good father, I intend to supply.

00:11:57.000 --> 00:12:01.000
This is an expectation of disciples, of Christians, no.

00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:04.000
Who do you want to be? Who do I want to be?

00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:06.000
Do I want to be a Christian when it comes to money?

00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.000
Or do I want to be a disciple? It changes everything.

00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:12.000
May I suggest to you that many of us flip-flop between it.

00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:17.000
In this church, right now, in this room.

00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:36.000
Fourth, he calls us to uncalculating generosity.

00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:42.000
Uncalculating generosity.

00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:48.000
He calls us to uncalculating generosity.

00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:54.000
Sometimes I bet he regrets saying, Tithes 10%.

00:12:54.000 --> 00:13:02.000
That's Christian.

00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:09.000
It's on this basis that he says, hey, when you pray, pray, give us this day our daily bread.

00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:12.000
Whenever he says pray a certain way, what he's trying to say is,

00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:14.000
this is who I am, this is what I'm going to do,

00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:18.000
but pray so that I can do it for you and you realize it's me doing it.

00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:21.000
So another way of saying, give us this day our daily bread is,

00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:23.000
you give us this day our daily bread.

00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:25.000
That's the statement we are making.

00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:29.000
You give us this day our daily bread.

00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:32.000
If we have that assurance of Matthew 6.11,

00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.000
then we can also have the assurance of Matthew 6.33.

00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:41.000
That since you give us our daily bread anyways, because you are Father and you are good,

00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:45.000
therefore it is very easy for me to seek your kingdom and your righteousness,

00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:54.000
because all the other things called daily bread are being taken care of you by anyways.

00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:58.000
Any questions?

00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:21.000
In about 14 minutes, 33 seconds.

00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:26.000
And Jesus says, so stop storing up for yourself,

00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:37.000
so stop storing up for yourself treasures on earth, treasures on earth.

00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:40.000
Stop storing up for yourself treasures on earth.

00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:42.000
What's he trying to do?

00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:45.000
Hey Jacob, can you reorient the way you think?

00:14:45.000 --> 00:15:03.000
Reorient the way you think from one type to the acquisition of something else.

00:15:03.000 --> 00:15:06.000
The reason stewardship programs in churches are successful

00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.000
is because they are basically telling you how to make money

00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:17.000
and so that when you turn 65, you will still have money to bless others and to keep tithing.

00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:23.000
It's highly irresponsible, because it's not the disciples' way of living.

00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.000
But Jacob, in Proverbs it also says,

00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:29.000
you will well condition your thoughts and pay attention to them.

00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:33.000
Yeah, which we talked about in Prosperity 1 and Prosperity 2.

00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:35.000
Well elaborated in both.

00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.000
I'm not good to sometimes I go and listen to what I've already spoken.

00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:42.000
And this is why we need three, four parts to this,

00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:44.000
because you can't bring it together in one.

00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:46.000
In Prosperity 2, we talked about,

00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:48.000
check the condition of your hearts and flocks,

00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:51.000
leave an inheritance for your children.

00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:53.000
We talked about those things.

00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:56.000
So we've got to put this, hold it all together.

00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:58.000
It is never this or that.

00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:03.000
It is always together.

00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:05.000
And in the church, and I'll talk about it a little later,

00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:07.000
in the church there have to be two types.

00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:09.000
Some who divest themselves of everything,

00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:11.000
and others who do not divest themselves of everything,

00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:15.000
so that they can supply those that have divested themselves.

00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:21.000
This is where we are heading, guys.

00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.000
This is where Jesus went.

00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:29.000
One type as in holding treasures of the earth is what Jesus is calling one type,

00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:32.000
and gathering treasures of heaven is the other type.

00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:37.000
So he's asking us to reorient from what it means to gather treasures of the earth

00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:40.000
to treasures of heaven.

00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:59.000
So why is he asking us to reorient? Why?

00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:02.000
Here are some reasons that some of them may strike home,

00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:04.000
some of them may not strike home.

00:17:04.000 --> 00:17:09.000
First, he wants us to know that material wealth is no use after you die.

00:17:09.000 --> 00:17:14.000
Material wealth is no use after you die.

00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:19.000
And what he means by that is, listen,

00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:22.000
not only is material no use after you die,

00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:24.000
because you're dead and you don't need it,

00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:28.000
but it doesn't help you in the life hereafter if you've been storing it up,

00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:33.000
because you will not be appointed to the things that you're supposed to be appointed to.

00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.000
Money gets in the way of how we will deal with things in the hereafter.

00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:44.000
Just imagine that for a second.

00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:51.000
We can spend about 50 years of our life saving up for 65 and beyond,

00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:58.000
and you will not be able to live in the hereafter the way you are supposed to be,

00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:01.000
if money gets in the way.

00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:06.000
Please don't hear what I'm saying as,

00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:13.000
therefore give up your jobs and let Nick work and the rest of us can eat off him.

00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:16.000
Yeah, that's not what we are saying.

00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:21.000
Sounds good, yeah.

00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:30.000
Okay, let's just take that entire row, Nick, Mark and Dilna.

00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:33.000
Now we should be taken care of.

00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.000
So, Nick and Dilna,

00:18:39.000 --> 00:18:44.000
yeah, so we're not saying that for a second,

00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:50.000
but we are saying that money gets in the way of how we function here on earth and it affects the hereafter.

00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:53.000
I always say it's oranges to oranges.

00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:56.000
It's not a different life when you stop living here on earth.

00:18:56.000 --> 00:19:01.000
The moment I die, the only thing that changes is I leave this body behind.

00:19:01.000 --> 00:19:02.000
Everything else is the same.

00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:05.000
Eternal life began the moment I received Christ.

00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:07.000
It is the same eternal life that continues.

00:19:07.000 --> 00:19:08.000
I get a new body.

00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:10.000
That's the only difference.

00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:14.000
And so what I do here is how I will live there.

00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:20.000
How I dealt with the least of things called mammon here is how I will be given things to rule there.

00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:22.000
You did well with five talents.

00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:24.000
Let me give you ten cities.

00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:28.000
We don't realize this because we do not have a clear picture of the hereafter,

00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:31.000
which is just heaven, which is like worship.

00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:34.000
And it's not.

00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:49.000
You know, there are people who come here from India, from Bangladesh, from Philippines, Pakistan, the Middle East.

00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:53.000
They used to have amazing positions there.

00:19:53.000 --> 00:20:02.000
They used to be highly placed senior officials, very educated, could beat a UBC graduate any day.

00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:07.000
Sorry, Derek, Dawn.

00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:10.000
Could be the UBC graduate any day.

00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:15.000
Highly skilled at their work, practical work, not theoretical work, practical work.

00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:18.000
They come here and I've seen them.

00:20:18.000 --> 00:20:24.000
How what they did in their countries and how they did in their countries doesn't translate when they come here.

00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:36.000
You find them sometimes guys who've worked their life very hard and they come here and they're pumping gas at Chevron or at Shell

00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:40.000
after having run companies because they do not get a job.

00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:43.000
You don't know what it feels like.

00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:45.000
Why am I painting this picture?

00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:51.000
Because we got to realize that what we do here on earth is how we will be rewarded later.

00:20:51.000 --> 00:20:54.000
Money gets in the way of how we function here.

00:20:54.000 --> 00:20:58.000
And there will not be tears and fears and stuff like that in heaven.

00:20:58.000 --> 00:21:02.000
But there can be regret of opportunities wasted when we were alive.

00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:06.000
That's how critical our work with money is.

00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:08.000
Which then brings me to another point.

00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:12.000
Just because you're retired does not mean that you're free of this.

00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:18.000
Because what you are as a retired person is actually a continuation of what you were when you were working.

00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:26.000
And in the same way what you will be here after will be a continuation of what you will have accomplished here.

00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:30.000
That's how important this is.

00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.000
Hereafter is not heaven guys.

00:21:34.000 --> 00:21:38.000
Hereafter is what Adam and Eve were supposed to be.

00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:42.000
Hereafter is what Adam and Eve were supposed to be.

00:21:42.000 --> 00:21:45.000
I give you all this.

00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:49.000
Go forth, multiply, replenish, subdue.

00:21:49.000 --> 00:21:51.000
Rule over everything that I have given you.

00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:54.000
I give you dominion over creation.

00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:57.000
I give you power over creation.

00:21:57.000 --> 00:22:00.000
I give you power over creation.

00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:03.000
I give you power over creation.

00:22:03.000 --> 00:22:10.000
The hereafter is a restoration to what Adam and Eve and mankind were supposed to be.

00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:15.000
If you want to catch a picture of what heaven looks like, look at Genesis 1 before the fall.

00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:18.000
And you will begin to see signs of what it looks like.

00:22:18.000 --> 00:22:23.000
And there is no mention of worship.

00:22:23.000 --> 00:22:28.000
Because worship is the most natural thing when you see God.

00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:32.000
Adoration is natural when you see God.

00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:34.000
There is no worship. There is no prayer time.

00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:35.000
There is nothing like that.

00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:39.000
There is nothing churchy in heaven.

00:22:39.000 --> 00:22:43.000
There are no pastors.

00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:46.000
Praise the Lord.

00:22:46.000 --> 00:22:50.000
There are no pastors.

00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.000
Everything we do on Sunday morning is absent in heaven.

00:22:54.000 --> 00:23:01.000
The only thing that is present in heaven that is present here on Sunday morning is God.

00:23:01.000 --> 00:23:02.000
Nothing else.

00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:03.000
So why do we do this?

00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:05.000
Because one, we've been instructed to do it.

00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:14.000
Two, because here is where we learn how to do this so that we can live the six days out there without this.

00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:18.000
Genesis 1 is what it will look like.

00:23:18.000 --> 00:23:20.000
Stewarding things that God has appointed us to.

00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:26.000
Which is why how we steward this thing called mammon critically affects what we steward in the future.

00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:30.000
Any questions?

00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:37.000
It will happen naturally.

00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:45.000
You'll catch a glimpse of him on his throne or walking and you will, wherever he is, will be his throne and you will just begin to.

00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:54.000
It's the same way you feel about a baby, some of you at least, or a cat, a few of you, or a burger.

00:23:54.000 --> 00:24:03.000
It's a sudden burst of, oh wow.

00:24:03.000 --> 00:24:04.000
No, I'm not hungry.

00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:08.000
I just was surprised that I mixed up burger and burglar.

00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:10.000
So that says something about me.

00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:16.000
So yeah, worship will be so different.

00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:20.000
Why do you think the angels are worshiping him?

00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:24.000
Not because they were created to worship him.

00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:26.000
They were created to serve us.

00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:30.000
But they cannot but help when they see him.

00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:36.000
Crazy, eh?

00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:46.000
There's nothing on the Sunday service that will be left in heaven.

00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:50.000
So material wealth is of no use beyond life on earth.

00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:51.000
No use.

00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:56.000
And he's saying don't just think of it as you're dead now so it's no use.

00:24:56.000 --> 00:24:58.000
It's actually no use.

00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:59.000
It doesn't help.

00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:00.000
How you steward it will help.

00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:04.000
But it is of no use otherwise.

00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:11.000
Two, treasures that the heart is set on may rot or may be stolen.

00:25:11.000 --> 00:25:14.000
Whenever your heart is set on treasures,

00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:21.000
when your heart is set on treasures,

00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:27.000
when your heart is set on treasures, it is stolen.

00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:29.000
It can decay.

00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:31.000
Why?

00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:36.000
Because the only treasure that Satan knows he cannot touch

00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:40.000
is the treasure that I have of God and of people.

00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:41.000
That he cannot touch.

00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:47.000
But any other treasure he will come to steal, kill and destroy.

00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:49.000
Treasures.

00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:53.000
When your heart is set on treasures, it can be stolen.

00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:55.000
It can decay.

00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:58.000
When your heart is set on treasures, it can be stolen.

00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:59.000
It can decay.

00:25:59.000 --> 00:26:00.000
I'm not saying it will be.

00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:01.000
I'm saying it can be stolen.

00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:02.000
It can decay.

00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:03.000
Why?

00:26:03.000 --> 00:26:10.000
Because the enemy has a habit of touching that which has become an idol.

00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:13.000
And so what do we do when things that are treasures are touched?

00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:14.000
We nail them down.

00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:19.000
And the more we nail them down, the more they make us dance for them.

00:26:19.000 --> 00:26:24.000
The more we nail them down, the more they make us dance for them.

00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.000
Your job is important.

00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:27.000
You don't want it taken away?

00:26:27.000 --> 00:26:28.000
Nail it down.

00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:29.000
Suck up to the boss.

00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:30.000
Do whatever is necessary.

00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:31.000
Nail it down.

00:26:31.000 --> 00:26:36.000
The more you nail an idol down, the more the idol makes you dance.

00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:55.000
Someone should write a song.

00:26:55.000 --> 00:26:56.000
Good.

00:26:56.000 --> 00:27:02.000
Holding, which is basically stockpiling and preserving.

00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:04.000
When we say holding, we think we are not holders.

00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:05.000
So let me simplify it.

00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:08.000
Stockpiling and preserving.

00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:10.000
That's what holding is.

00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:11.000
Stockpiling and preserving.

00:27:11.000 --> 00:27:16.000
As in, we gather it together, and then we preserve it from being lost.

00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:18.000
That's what holding is.

00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:21.000
Because nobody wants to be a holder.

00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:24.000
But in our own ways, we stockpile and preserve.

00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:27.000
Holding harms the eye.

00:27:27.000 --> 00:27:29.000
Holding harms the eye.

00:27:29.000 --> 00:27:30.000
What do you mean holding harms the eye?

00:27:30.000 --> 00:27:40.000
The Bible says that in that same passage, 620 to 33, it says that if your eye is bad or evil,

00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:42.000
how great is the darkness within you?

00:27:42.000 --> 00:27:45.000
And so it seems to be an odd word that's thrown in there.

00:27:45.000 --> 00:27:50.000
But when you look at Matthew, 2015, Jesus explains that in a way when he says,

00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:59.000
Hey guys, if your eyes are not singularly generous, if your eyes are instead full of greed,

00:27:59.000 --> 00:28:04.000
then know that the darkness within you will be greater.

00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:16.000
A stingy, covetous person walks even as a believer in darkness.

00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:27.000
Matthew, 2015, talks about it or explains what he says in Matthew 6, 22 to 24.

00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:40.000
Stinginess, selfishness and reluctance will cloud your life with darkness.

00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.000
Any questions?

00:28:44.000 --> 00:29:02.000
Stinginess, selfishness and reluctance will cloud my life with darkness.

00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:07.000
Remember the word I used earlier on, uncalculating generosity.

00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:09.000
It's an important word.

00:29:09.000 --> 00:29:13.000
Important words.

00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000
Canada lost today 4-1, big time loss.

00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:23.000
I feel bad for the coach after what he said.

00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:28.000
Hey, this isn't super important, but pray for...

00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:29.000
I don't even know whether...

00:29:29.000 --> 00:29:31.000
No, it's a good thing.

00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:40.000
Spencer Tracy, who's the backup goalie for the Canucks, is pretty obvious about his beliefs.

00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:42.000
Spencer Martin, sorry, not Spencer Tracy.

00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:47.000
Spencer Tracy was an old actor who died some years ago.

00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:49.000
Who's coming for dinner?

00:29:49.000 --> 00:29:51.000
Sorry, Spencer Martin.

00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:58.000
Spencer Martin, who's the backup goalie for the Canucks, is pretty loud about his faith.

00:29:58.000 --> 00:30:03.000
Even if you look at his helmet, on the back of it it says Jeremiah 29, 11, and it has a cross on it.

00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:11.000
So I'm not praying that he stops every goal and the Canucks win the Stanley Cup,

00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:14.000
because we're not looking for miracles right now.

00:30:14.000 --> 00:30:21.000
But pray that he has the ability to speak, because it's a game where speaking is very difficult.

00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:25.000
Pray that he has the... because he speaks of his faith.

00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:29.000
And for a rookie, it's not easy.

00:30:29.000 --> 00:30:36.000
It's got nothing to do with hockey, guys, because you'll need... yeah.

00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:39.000
More faith, no.

00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:48.000
Really bad jokes, but if they win today, the Canucks will have a website,

00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:51.000
because they would have strung three Ws together.

00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:54.000
It's just a really bad joke, yeah.

00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:56.000
Okay, sorry.

00:30:56.000 --> 00:30:57.000
Can you repeat that line?

00:30:57.000 --> 00:30:59.000
They'll string three Ws together.

00:30:59.000 --> 00:31:00.000
No.

00:31:06.000 --> 00:31:09.000
Yeah, uncalculating generosity is a word that we need to keep in mind,

00:31:09.000 --> 00:31:13.000
because our generosity is usually limited.

00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:21.000
Guys, when we talk like this, the immediate thing that comes up in our mind,

00:31:21.000 --> 00:31:26.000
because we are supposed to be good stewards, is everything needs to be balanced.

00:31:27.000 --> 00:31:32.000
Tell me anything in your father that is balanced towards you.

00:31:37.000 --> 00:31:40.000
Tell me how balanced he is towards you.

00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:46.000
There's nothing balanced.

00:31:47.000 --> 00:31:51.000
We are the ones who say we should be balanced in our stewardship, we should be balanced.

00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:57.000
These words are all just ways of getting away with whatever we want to.

00:32:02.000 --> 00:32:05.000
Uncalculating generosity is not knowing what you have given.

00:32:14.000 --> 00:32:16.000
How much I have left for myself.

00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:18.000
Scary living like this, man.

00:32:18.000 --> 00:32:22.000
Even as I teach, I feel some of...

00:32:22.000 --> 00:32:28.000
I can literally see words in your mind saying, this is irresponsible.

00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:36.000
No, it's very hard to make blank statements like,

00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:39.000
you shouldn't be bothered about what you've got left,

00:32:39.000 --> 00:32:42.000
because what if you have a wife and she has to be fed,

00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:44.000
or you have a child and you have to be fed.

00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:47.000
You can't just throw it all away saying, oh well, I gave it away.

00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:50.000
Jesus called guys like that, kaffirs, saying,

00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:54.000
if you can't take care of your family and you say I gave it as korban to the Lord,

00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:56.000
then you're worse than an infidel.

00:32:56.000 --> 00:33:00.000
So there is this ability to take these things that we are talking about,

00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:04.000
knit them together, and be able to live on one hand,

00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:07.000
responsible for my child and my wife, on the other hand,

00:33:07.000 --> 00:33:09.000
irresponsibly giving away.

00:33:09.000 --> 00:33:11.000
And they both exist together.

00:33:11.000 --> 00:33:13.000
It is held in tension.

00:33:13.000 --> 00:33:16.000
It is impossible to make a blanket statement on any of these.

00:33:16.000 --> 00:33:24.000
Here's the easy way to go about it.

00:33:24.000 --> 00:33:27.000
Begin to err on the side of what you're not.

00:33:27.000 --> 00:33:31.000
Begin to err on the side of what you're not.

00:33:31.000 --> 00:33:34.000
Are you someone who's irresponsibly giving away?

00:33:34.000 --> 00:33:36.000
Well then, become responsible for your dog.

00:33:36.000 --> 00:33:42.000
Are you someone who is very responsible for your dog and your turtle,

00:33:43.000 --> 00:33:47.000
and you are irresponsible?

00:33:47.000 --> 00:33:50.000
You're very responsible for that, but you're very calculated about your giving?

00:33:50.000 --> 00:33:53.000
Well, err on the side of giving.

00:33:53.000 --> 00:33:58.000
Fix the area that is weak.

00:33:58.000 --> 00:34:01.000
I give you permission, Iris, to get both a dog and a turtle,

00:34:01.000 --> 00:34:10.000
because Derek wants to give that to you.

00:34:10.000 --> 00:34:17.000
Happy life, Derek.

00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:20.000
Here's another reason why God...

00:34:20.000 --> 00:34:22.000
Oh, you know what? You don't give it.

00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:28.000
Donald will give it as a gift.

00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:30.000
Possessions compete for loyalty.

00:34:30.000 --> 00:34:33.000
Possessions compete for loyalty with kingdom.

00:34:33.000 --> 00:34:39.000
Possessions compete for loyalty with kingdom.

00:34:39.000 --> 00:34:44.000
Here's a terrible truth that applies to, I think, all of us.

00:34:44.000 --> 00:35:02.000
You and I live in a space where we assign our personal rights.

00:35:02.000 --> 00:35:14.000
To both God and Mammon, or money.

00:35:14.000 --> 00:35:20.000
You and I live in a space where we assign, as in we give,

00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:25.000
we assign our rights to the authority of both God and money.

00:35:25.000 --> 00:35:30.000
And that is exactly why Jesus said, Jacob, stop living like that.

00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:33.000
You can't assign it to both me and money.

00:35:33.000 --> 00:35:44.000
You've got to choose one or the other.

00:35:44.000 --> 00:35:48.000
And when we live like this, then it's like having a ball and chain on your leg.

00:35:48.000 --> 00:35:51.000
Your progress is slower in the kingdom,

00:35:51.000 --> 00:35:54.000
and there's an invisible spiritual ceiling over you,

00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:57.000
because you have assigned and I have assigned our personal rights

00:35:57.000 --> 00:36:00.000
to the authority of both God and money.

00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:02.000
That's the space that most Christians live in.

00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:11.000
That is the space disciples are called to not live in.

00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:24.000
Questions?

00:36:24.000 --> 00:36:29.000
As in I'm saying, Nick, I'm giving you the right to tell me what to do,

00:36:29.000 --> 00:36:32.000
and Vivian, I'm giving you the right to tell me what to do.

00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:34.000
Both of you can now tell me what to do,

00:36:34.000 --> 00:36:38.000
and both of you will be contradictory because you work against each other's purposes.

00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:41.000
So now I've assigned my rights to both of you, because I need both of you.

00:36:41.000 --> 00:36:44.000
I need you because I see you as God, and I need salvation,

00:36:44.000 --> 00:36:46.000
and I know how helpful you can be.

00:36:46.000 --> 00:36:50.000
But I need you because I see you as money that makes my life run,

00:36:50.000 --> 00:36:52.000
and now I have to submit to you also.

00:36:52.000 --> 00:36:56.000
And you both contradict each other.

00:36:56.000 --> 00:36:59.000
Christians live in this space.

00:36:59.000 --> 00:37:02.000
It's a very practical, common sense way to live,

00:37:02.000 --> 00:37:06.000
but it is not a disciple's way to live.

00:37:06.000 --> 00:37:10.000
Everything in us is screaming right now, be practical.

00:37:10.000 --> 00:37:16.000
Go talk to Jesus, because his statements were more irresponsible than mine.

00:37:16.000 --> 00:37:20.000
At least I'm not telling you to look at the birds with the eye.

00:37:32.000 --> 00:37:43.000
Jesus overturns, Jesus overturns the, Jesus overturns the pursuit of God and money,

00:37:43.000 --> 00:38:02.000
by reminding you that you are not his employee,

00:38:02.000 --> 00:38:12.000
but wholly owned by him.

00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:18.000
I'm just being kind, so let me call you what he called you, slave.

00:38:18.000 --> 00:38:27.000
Jesus absolutely dismantles or destroys this concept that you can serve both God and money,

00:38:27.000 --> 00:38:29.000
that Jacob, you can assign your rights to both.

00:38:29.000 --> 00:38:33.000
He dismantles it by saying, here I want you to know that you're not employed by me.

00:38:33.000 --> 00:38:35.000
You're fully owned by me.

00:38:35.000 --> 00:38:38.000
And because you're fully owned by me, the other word for it is slave,

00:38:38.000 --> 00:38:42.000
and you're dependent on me, you cannot be dependent on both.

00:38:42.000 --> 00:38:47.000
And yet he gives me the free will too, but he wants to remind me that you cannot be dependent on both.

00:38:47.000 --> 00:38:52.000
I wholly own you.

00:38:52.000 --> 00:38:56.000
Another song someone can write, Moonlighting with Mammon.

00:38:56.000 --> 00:39:21.000
So each disciple's trajectory is determined by the valuation you put on earthly treasure.

00:39:21.000 --> 00:39:30.000
A disciple's trajectory is determined by the valuation you put on earthly treasure.

00:39:30.000 --> 00:39:33.000
When I say earthly treasure, don't think only money.

00:39:33.000 --> 00:39:37.000
Think of everything that gives me security here on earth.

00:39:37.000 --> 00:39:48.000
Money, job, position, prospects, future security.

00:39:48.000 --> 00:39:52.000
Come on, Jacob, are you saying that I'm not supposed to pay attention to it?

00:39:52.000 --> 00:39:56.000
I'm saying that you're not supposed to pay attention to it the way you're paying attention to it

00:39:56.000 --> 00:40:12.000
because it is most important in your life right now, and it cannot have that place.

00:40:12.000 --> 00:40:14.000
Can you say that again?

00:40:14.000 --> 00:40:22.000
Yeah, a disciple's trajectory, each disciple's trajectory will be determined by the valuation

00:40:22.000 --> 00:40:26.000
that they put on earthly treasures.

00:40:26.000 --> 00:40:32.000
Each disciple's trajectory is determined by the valuation they put on earthly treasure.

00:40:32.000 --> 00:40:37.000
It's determined both here and in the future.

00:40:37.000 --> 00:40:53.000
Crazy, eh?

00:40:53.000 --> 00:41:03.000
Because it orients the heart, guys. It orients the heart.

00:41:03.000 --> 00:41:08.000
Another thing we must not fall into the trap of, just because I may not have money right now

00:41:08.000 --> 00:41:11.000
does not mean this does not apply to me.

00:41:11.000 --> 00:41:13.000
It's a condition of the heart.

00:41:13.000 --> 00:41:15.000
Money doesn't change the condition of the heart.

00:41:15.000 --> 00:41:18.000
Money projects the condition of the heart.

00:41:18.000 --> 00:41:20.000
Money never changes the condition of the heart.

00:41:20.000 --> 00:41:28.000
Money only takes on the color of your heart.

00:41:28.000 --> 00:41:32.000
So when sometimes we think, I don't have money, so this is not really applying to me.

00:41:32.000 --> 00:41:35.000
I got 40 years ahead of me. This really doesn't apply to me.

00:41:35.000 --> 00:41:38.000
I'm staying with my parents. This really doesn't apply to me.

00:41:38.000 --> 00:41:40.000
It applies to you.

00:41:40.000 --> 00:41:49.000
Because all of us at one point didn't have money, stayed with our parents, and were 20 years old.

00:41:49.000 --> 00:41:54.000
Some of us are still 20.

00:41:54.000 --> 00:42:01.000
Dawn's not looking up. That's good.

00:42:01.000 --> 00:42:03.000
So what are heavenly treasures?

00:42:03.000 --> 00:42:07.000
What is this? Jesus is asking us to exchange earthly treasures for heavenly treasures.

00:42:07.000 --> 00:42:09.000
So what are heavenly treasures?

00:42:09.000 --> 00:42:14.000
We'll just touch on one or two today, because there's more than one or two.

00:42:14.000 --> 00:42:32.000
Treasures in heaven also means treasures with God now,

00:42:32.000 --> 00:42:47.000
because you begin to live by kingdom priorities.

00:42:47.000 --> 00:42:48.000
Where do we read about this?

00:42:48.000 --> 00:42:51.000
We read about it in Matthew 6, where Jesus says,

00:42:51.000 --> 00:42:58.000
Listen, I want you to know that whenever a seed falls, it is choked out by the cares of the world.

00:42:58.000 --> 00:43:03.000
So when we talk about treasures in heaven, we always think of streets of gold and mansions.

00:43:03.000 --> 00:43:08.000
Perish that idea. It is not what you're going to get.

00:43:08.000 --> 00:43:11.000
There were no streets of gold in Eden.

00:43:11.000 --> 00:43:15.000
There was gold, but it wasn't like a big deal.

00:43:15.000 --> 00:43:17.000
It's a way of saying, mansions in heaven.

00:43:17.000 --> 00:43:19.000
What are you going to do in a mansion in heaven?

00:43:19.000 --> 00:43:32.000
You'll have to clean it.

00:43:32.000 --> 00:43:38.000
You'll have to clean it, and there's no rumba either.

00:43:38.000 --> 00:43:41.000
It's all cleaning on yourself.

00:43:41.000 --> 00:43:46.000
By the way, the rumba, if someone offers you a rumba, don't necessarily think it's the best thing in the world,

00:43:46.000 --> 00:43:56.000
because that blooming thing can't figure its way around the chairs, so you've got to keep removing the chairs so it can go.

00:43:56.000 --> 00:43:59.000
So I felt sad for the thing.

00:43:59.000 --> 00:44:02.000
It was like having a little pup that doesn't know its way.

00:44:02.000 --> 00:44:04.000
It keeps bumping into chairs, keeps bumping into corners.

00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:07.000
Then I'd pick it up and put it in the center so it'd start again.

00:44:07.000 --> 00:44:10.000
Finally, I decided, why not just sweep all the dust and put it in its path?

00:44:10.000 --> 00:44:12.000
So I swept everything.

00:44:12.000 --> 00:44:15.000
I put it in its path and then said, now go.

00:44:15.000 --> 00:44:23.000
I mean, I did more work after I got it than before I did.

00:44:23.000 --> 00:44:30.000
Thank you, Bahrain, for your thoughtful gift.

00:44:30.000 --> 00:44:37.000
It's agonizing to watch.

00:44:37.000 --> 00:44:41.000
Oh, so it's coming back at me now.

00:44:41.000 --> 00:44:46.000
So treasures in heaven means treasures with God now.

00:44:46.000 --> 00:44:56.000
Guys, money will always get in the way of your trajectory and your present relationship with God.

00:44:56.000 --> 00:45:03.000
Mammon will get in the way of your trajectory, because once you assign your rights to both, and we all do,

00:45:03.000 --> 00:45:09.000
it'll determine trajectory and it will affect my relationship with God,

00:45:09.000 --> 00:45:13.000
because it squeezes God life out of you.

00:45:13.000 --> 00:45:17.000
Mammon and the cares of the world, the security that is required to live in this world,

00:45:17.000 --> 00:45:20.000
will always squeeze the God life out of you.

00:45:20.000 --> 00:45:23.000
Jesus said it in Matthew 6.

00:45:23.000 --> 00:45:29.000
Hey, if this is hard to receive, hit yourself like this so the thing shifts at least.

00:45:29.000 --> 00:45:31.000
Yeah, you literally have to do that.

00:45:31.000 --> 00:45:37.000
It is so encrusted that you're going to shift it.

00:45:37.000 --> 00:45:50.000
Sometimes the Berlin Wall doesn't come down in a day.

00:45:50.000 --> 00:45:55.000
Second, heavenly treasures has to do with eternal life.

00:45:55.000 --> 00:46:01.000
Heavenly treasures have to do with eternal life.

00:46:01.000 --> 00:46:12.000
But here's the thing, it can either help you enter into kingdom life,

00:46:12.000 --> 00:46:20.000
or it will stop you from participating.

00:46:20.000 --> 00:46:22.000
Jacob, how can you say that?

00:46:22.000 --> 00:46:25.000
There's a terrible story in the Bible, Mark chapter 10.

00:46:25.000 --> 00:46:30.000
And a rich young ruler came to Jesus and he said, what shall I do to gain eternal life?

00:46:30.000 --> 00:46:32.000
And Jesus tells him.

00:46:32.000 --> 00:46:36.000
And the message puts it this way.

00:46:36.000 --> 00:46:37.000
It's terrible.

00:46:37.000 --> 00:46:41.000
Sometimes the message just makes things really ugly.

00:46:41.000 --> 00:46:43.000
Mark 10, 23.

00:46:43.000 --> 00:46:45.000
Look at what he says.

00:46:45.000 --> 00:46:51.000
Mark 10 verse, at this the man's face fell.

00:46:51.000 --> 00:46:53.000
Mark 10, 22.

00:46:53.000 --> 00:46:55.000
Reading from the message.

00:46:55.000 --> 00:46:57.000
The man's face clouded over.

00:46:57.000 --> 00:46:59.000
This was the last thing he expected to hear.

00:46:59.000 --> 00:47:02.000
And he walked off with a heavy heart.

00:47:02.000 --> 00:47:07.000
He was holding on tight to a lot of things and not about to let go.

00:47:07.000 --> 00:47:14.000
Looking at his disciples, Jesus said, do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who have it all to enter God's kingdom?

00:47:14.000 --> 00:47:19.000
The disciples couldn't believe what they were hearing, but Jesus kept on.

00:47:19.000 --> 00:47:21.000
You can't imagine how difficult it is.

00:47:21.000 --> 00:47:30.000
I'd say it's easier for a camel to go throw a needle's eye than for the rich to get into God's kingdom.

00:47:30.000 --> 00:47:34.000
So we are ones that are saved, but we cannot live as Christians.

00:47:34.000 --> 00:47:36.000
We have to live as disciples.

00:47:36.000 --> 00:47:44.000
And if you want to participate in the kingdom, I beg you, please don't take the middle road.

00:47:44.000 --> 00:47:45.000
Don't try to balance this off.

00:47:45.000 --> 00:47:47.000
Don't plan your retirement.

00:47:47.000 --> 00:47:49.000
There's too much at stake.

00:47:49.000 --> 00:47:50.000
Some of us may die before our retirement.

00:47:50.000 --> 00:47:53.000
What happens then?

00:47:53.000 --> 00:47:55.000
May you not die.

00:47:55.000 --> 00:48:07.000
But I'm saying.

00:48:07.000 --> 00:48:09.000
Oh, there's a better way.

00:48:09.000 --> 00:48:14.000
May you not retire.

00:48:14.000 --> 00:48:17.000
I think that's smarter.

00:48:17.000 --> 00:48:22.000
What about the freedom of doing things that you haven't been able to do because you've been working for it?

00:48:22.000 --> 00:48:25.000
Yeah, but work different.

00:48:25.000 --> 00:48:27.000
But that's a whole new topic.

00:48:27.000 --> 00:48:29.000
Let's stick with the first one.

00:48:29.000 --> 00:48:31.000
Yeah.

00:48:31.000 --> 00:48:36.000
Guys, in the church there should be two types of people, and we're getting close to answering Betty's question.

00:48:36.000 --> 00:48:40.000
Two types.

00:48:40.000 --> 00:48:44.000
Two types in the church.

00:48:44.000 --> 00:48:46.000
And both are kingdom-minded.

00:48:46.000 --> 00:48:49.000
Both are kingdom-minded.

00:48:49.000 --> 00:48:53.000
So don't think one is less or one is more.

00:48:53.000 --> 00:49:06.000
One is a mobile, as in easy to move at the drop of a hat, a mobile, divested lifestyle.

00:49:06.000 --> 00:49:11.000
Like that of Jesus.

00:49:11.000 --> 00:49:14.000
And his disciples.

00:49:14.000 --> 00:49:19.000
And they were dependent on the support of others.

00:49:19.000 --> 00:49:24.000
So that's one type of people in the church.

00:49:24.000 --> 00:49:33.000
And then the second one is those who had not been able to do anything.

00:49:33.000 --> 00:49:38.000
Those who had not divested themselves of all possessions.

00:49:38.000 --> 00:49:51.000
Those who had not divested themselves of all possessions.

00:49:51.000 --> 00:50:00.000
But they supply the need of the dependent.

00:50:00.000 --> 00:50:03.000
But they are detached.

00:50:03.000 --> 00:50:09.000
But they are detached from what they possess.

00:50:09.000 --> 00:50:12.000
They are detached from what they possess.

00:50:12.000 --> 00:50:16.000
What if we could find people that fit into both?

00:50:16.000 --> 00:50:21.000
Where you have a Priscilla type or a Phoebe type.

00:50:21.000 --> 00:50:24.000
They are both mobile and divested of possessions.

00:50:24.000 --> 00:50:29.000
Yet they have been able to walk in and...

00:50:29.000 --> 00:50:35.000
They have businesses or they have ways to function where on one hand they have possessions,

00:50:35.000 --> 00:50:38.000
they divest themselves of it, are completely detached from it.

00:50:38.000 --> 00:50:43.000
What if there were people, there was a third group that could do both?

00:50:43.000 --> 00:50:45.000
The church has to have two or three types.

00:50:45.000 --> 00:50:49.000
And these types are important for the church to function.

00:50:49.000 --> 00:50:52.000
A mobile.

00:50:52.000 --> 00:50:58.000
Jesus lifestyle group of people who have divested themselves of possessions

00:50:58.000 --> 00:51:00.000
and are dependent on the support of others.

00:51:00.000 --> 00:51:04.000
But they can go at the drop of a hat wherever they are sent.

00:51:04.000 --> 00:51:07.000
And then others who have not divested themselves of possessions.

00:51:07.000 --> 00:51:10.000
And they supply the need of the dependent.

00:51:10.000 --> 00:51:13.000
But they are completely detached from possessions.

00:51:13.000 --> 00:51:16.000
How do you measure detachment? Very simple.

00:51:16.000 --> 00:51:21.000
Do you feel emotions like fear?

00:51:23.000 --> 00:51:25.000
Envy?

00:51:25.000 --> 00:51:30.000
A craving for more when it comes to money.

00:51:30.000 --> 00:51:32.000
Is there a fear?

00:51:32.000 --> 00:51:37.000
If there is fear attached to money, then I know that I am not detached to money.

00:51:37.000 --> 00:51:45.000
If there is a craving that I need more, that I am not secure enough,

00:51:45.000 --> 00:51:48.000
then I know I am not detached from money.

00:51:48.000 --> 00:51:54.000
If there are emotions like greed or envy or covetousness.

00:51:54.000 --> 00:52:01.000
I remember a Christian couple who got so envious because they were invited to someone's house.

00:52:01.000 --> 00:52:07.000
That was really good and the food was good and everything was such a great thing.

00:52:07.000 --> 00:52:11.000
But this couple is sitting there and you can see them turning green

00:52:11.000 --> 00:52:15.000
because it was like, how come they have this?

00:52:15.000 --> 00:52:19.000
What are the emotions that rage through your heart when it comes to money?

00:52:19.000 --> 00:52:21.000
It will show you that you are still not detached.

00:52:21.000 --> 00:52:24.000
I want to tell you that I am not detached from money.

00:52:24.000 --> 00:52:26.000
I still feel emotions when it comes to money.

00:52:26.000 --> 00:52:30.000
Money doesn't feel any emotions. It's amoral and not emotional.

00:52:30.000 --> 00:52:32.000
But I am about it.

00:52:32.000 --> 00:52:36.000
Until the day I am not, I am assigning my rights to both.

00:52:36.000 --> 00:52:40.000
God and mammon.

00:52:41.000 --> 00:52:47.000
This is where we want to get. Why? Because this is Jesus-like.

00:52:47.000 --> 00:52:50.000
That's why.

00:52:50.000 --> 00:52:56.000
How dare you stop anywhere else?

00:52:56.000 --> 00:52:59.000
How dare you?

00:52:59.000 --> 00:53:03.000
Any questions, guys?

00:53:14.000 --> 00:53:19.000
I just want to suddenly shift to, again,

00:53:19.000 --> 00:53:24.000
within giving, but I want to shift to what giving looks like in the church.

00:53:24.000 --> 00:53:28.000
Twisted Christian giving. This is twisted Christian giving.

00:53:28.000 --> 00:53:30.000
I'll just read it. I won't write it down.

00:53:30.000 --> 00:53:36.000
Some people will not give because the church is doing well.

00:53:36.000 --> 00:53:40.000
Some people will not give because the church is doing well.

00:53:40.000 --> 00:53:42.000
That's what I'm saying.

00:53:42.000 --> 00:53:47.000
Some people will not give because the church is doing well.

00:53:47.000 --> 00:53:51.000
That's the sound for not a good idea.

00:53:51.000 --> 00:53:56.000
Not giving because the church is doing well.

00:53:56.000 --> 00:54:00.000
How do you measure well?

00:54:00.000 --> 00:54:07.000
Second, your sole focus is to give to people in other nations,

00:54:07.000 --> 00:54:11.000
but you won't give to the house because you've got people to support in India

00:54:11.000 --> 00:54:16.000
and in Africa and in Eastern Europe and in the US and other ministries,

00:54:16.000 --> 00:54:21.000
and so you won't give here.

00:54:21.000 --> 00:54:24.000
This will sound odd on the recording, but so be it.

00:54:24.000 --> 00:54:26.000
At least you'll remember.

00:54:26.000 --> 00:54:29.000
What did he say about? And then you can recount everything.

00:54:29.000 --> 00:54:33.000
Third, not giving because the church isn't doing a good job.

00:54:33.000 --> 00:54:36.000
Well, then leave.

00:54:36.000 --> 00:54:39.000
If the church is not going, I don't feel like giving to this church

00:54:39.000 --> 00:54:41.000
because it's not doing a good job.

00:54:41.000 --> 00:54:44.000
Please leave.

00:54:44.000 --> 00:54:49.000
Find a better church.

00:54:49.000 --> 00:54:54.000
I don't hear a single hallelujah.

00:54:54.000 --> 00:54:58.000
Thanks.

00:54:58.000 --> 00:55:04.000
Another way of giving is control of leaders and pastors through money,

00:55:04.000 --> 00:55:08.000
where you give because you want to have some say.

00:55:08.000 --> 00:55:12.000
It's happened in this church, and there was one particular person

00:55:12.000 --> 00:55:16.000
who used to give money directly to me and then would ask me to do things,

00:55:16.000 --> 00:55:18.000
and so finally I asked her to go give the money to Heidi,

00:55:18.000 --> 00:55:22.000
and she would put it through the church, and then the lady stopped giving.

00:55:22.000 --> 00:55:29.000
So sometimes money is given to see if leaders can be controlled.

00:55:29.000 --> 00:55:32.000
Fourth, giving when I will get more.

00:55:32.000 --> 00:55:35.000
When the Lord blesses me, I will give.

00:55:35.000 --> 00:55:42.000
That's like the Canucks winning the Stanley Cup.

00:55:42.000 --> 00:55:47.000
Then not paying attention to the homeless, to the widows, to the orphans.

00:55:47.000 --> 00:55:52.000
Not paying attention to the homeless, the widows, and the orphans

00:55:52.000 --> 00:55:57.000
because I'm giving in church, so I don't need to do that.

00:55:57.000 --> 00:56:02.000
Containing all, you're giving within 10%.

00:56:02.000 --> 00:56:05.000
Try 11, 11 and a half.

00:56:05.000 --> 00:56:09.000
It's a way to start.

00:56:09.000 --> 00:56:14.000
Giving for a charitable deduction.

00:56:14.000 --> 00:56:22.000
Any questions, guys, on that?

00:56:22.000 --> 00:56:24.000
Okay.

00:56:24.000 --> 00:56:31.000
So what giving can we practice?

00:56:31.000 --> 00:56:53.000
Giving to the house so God can supply his vision through your generosity.

00:56:53.000 --> 00:57:11.000
Give tithes, first fruits, arms free of percentages.

00:57:11.000 --> 00:57:29.000
Give to poorer churches, emergencies,

00:57:29.000 --> 00:57:42.000
widows, orphans who have no one else to take care of them.

00:57:42.000 --> 00:57:50.000
Give to the gospel, the spreading of the gospel.

00:57:50.000 --> 00:57:53.000
What, the church is supposed to do all this? Yep.

00:57:53.000 --> 00:57:56.000
The gospel is free. It must remain so.

00:57:56.000 --> 00:58:09.000
Give to people who break bread into your life.

00:58:09.000 --> 00:58:16.000
Give to those in need.

00:58:16.000 --> 00:58:21.000
As in either lend or give.

00:58:21.000 --> 00:58:25.000
You can decide. Once you decide, stick with it.

00:58:25.000 --> 00:58:33.000
Glean, give away good, new stuff

00:58:33.000 --> 00:58:38.000
that you have sentimental value for the last 40 years towards.

00:58:38.000 --> 00:58:45.000
Deuteronomy 24, 19 to 21.

00:58:45.000 --> 00:58:49.000
Pay your debts.

00:58:49.000 --> 00:58:52.000
I put that with giving. So all this is giving.

00:58:52.000 --> 00:58:57.000
The thing is, come on, Jacob, you can't expect us to give towards all this.

00:58:57.000 --> 00:59:02.000
No, you give towards the church. The church is supposed to give all this.

00:59:02.000 --> 00:59:08.000
This is how churches used to operate in the New Testament.

00:59:08.000 --> 00:59:15.000
And if you can do that, or if your church is not doing that, well, then you take it on.

00:59:15.000 --> 00:59:17.000
But Jacob, what will I live on?

00:59:17.000 --> 00:59:24.000
If you're saying go 30%, 40%, 50%, go 11 and a half.

00:59:24.000 --> 00:59:26.000
Increase.

00:59:26.000 --> 00:59:33.000
Take a hammer to the tithe.

00:59:33.000 --> 00:59:38.000
Because it's limiting everything.

00:59:38.000 --> 00:59:47.000
Ask me questions if you want to challenge me on this.

00:59:47.000 --> 00:59:52.000
Yeah.

00:59:52.000 --> 00:59:58.000
Tithes are what I want to bring, say, let's say, let's stick with our understanding of tithes, 10%,

00:59:58.000 --> 01:00:00.000
when it actually was 23 and one-third.

01:00:00.000 --> 01:00:03.000
Let's just go with 10, because 23 was frightening everybody.

01:00:03.000 --> 01:00:06.000
So let's go with 10%.

01:00:06.000 --> 01:00:11.000
So let's assume you start with 10 and you decide I'm going to give 11 or 12% starting next month.

01:00:11.000 --> 01:00:12.000
So that's one.

01:00:12.000 --> 01:00:14.000
First fruits.

01:00:14.000 --> 01:00:19.000
When you receive a bonus, when you receive something, you decide, okay, I'm going to take whatever percentage,

01:00:19.000 --> 01:00:26.000
maybe one-tenth of 1%, or maybe all of it, or maybe 2%.

01:00:26.000 --> 01:00:28.000
I'll take it and I'll give it.

01:00:28.000 --> 01:00:29.000
What are you doing?

01:00:29.000 --> 01:00:36.000
It's an old principle where God is saying, hey, I gave you an increase, guess what he did first?

01:00:36.000 --> 01:00:42.000
You brought a portion of it and gave it to me, and therefore, because you've given me the first, I'll bless the rest.

01:00:42.000 --> 01:00:44.000
Simple. Arms.

01:00:44.000 --> 01:00:45.000
They're a poor.

01:00:45.000 --> 01:00:50.000
Give to the poor.

01:00:50.000 --> 01:00:58.000
This is how you, now you have reason to cultivate this thing called uncalculating generosity.

01:00:58.000 --> 01:01:03.000
If this is not there, then we have calculating generosity, which is 10%, depending on which church you come from.

01:01:03.000 --> 01:01:06.000
It's before or after taxes, which gets even more complicated.

01:01:06.000 --> 01:01:13.000
Let's not even go there.

01:01:13.000 --> 01:01:15.000
We should ask, give cheerfully.

01:01:15.000 --> 01:01:17.000
Yeah. Yeah.

01:01:17.000 --> 01:01:27.000
And if it is hard to give cheerfully, then still give her, because if we are going to wait for your cheerfulness, it might be forever.

01:01:27.000 --> 01:01:36.000
Yeah. Sometimes the joy comes only in the morning.

01:01:36.000 --> 01:01:42.000
Those who, those who sow in the morning will reap a joy tomorrow.

01:01:42.000 --> 01:01:48.000
So come up sadly, because tomorrow you will laugh.

01:01:48.000 --> 01:01:51.000
Yeah, but it is important that we give cheerfully.

01:01:51.000 --> 01:02:00.000
And what God meant by cheerfully is not ha ha, because I've seen in churches you have to come laughing and dancing and so on.

01:02:00.000 --> 01:02:02.000
And so I'm not even, I'm not talking about that.

01:02:02.000 --> 01:02:05.000
When he said cheerfully is, don't give it a compulsion.

01:02:05.000 --> 01:02:06.000
Don't give out of obligation.

01:02:06.000 --> 01:02:08.000
Don't give out of necessity.

01:02:08.000 --> 01:02:16.000
Compulsion, obligation, necessity, rob you of joy.

01:02:16.000 --> 01:02:28.000
Compulsion, obligation, and necessity rob you of joy.

01:02:28.000 --> 01:02:32.000
Gleaning. I heard dating.

01:02:32.000 --> 01:02:34.000
What about dating?

01:02:34.000 --> 01:02:39.000
Okay, what was he listening to?

01:02:39.000 --> 01:02:44.000
Gleaning. Gleaning is when God would say, hey, there are trees in your orchard.

01:02:44.000 --> 01:02:46.000
Go get the fruit from the tree.

01:02:46.000 --> 01:02:52.000
But after you get most of the fruit, don't go shake the tree multiple times so that every fruit falls.

01:02:52.000 --> 01:02:56.000
It's like it's okay if you don't pluck all the fruit.

01:02:56.000 --> 01:02:57.000
You know why?

01:02:57.000 --> 01:03:03.000
So that immigrants or laborers who are walking by your tree can pluck and eat what is left.

01:03:03.000 --> 01:03:08.000
And then after they've done it, don't go shake it one more time, because there are birds that need to be fed.

01:03:08.000 --> 01:03:09.000
Let the birds eat it.

01:03:09.000 --> 01:03:11.000
It's crazy what God was saying.

01:03:11.000 --> 01:03:18.000
He was saying, you don't have to wait till you've sucked every drop of blood out of that leather jacket.

01:03:18.000 --> 01:03:26.000
It's time to give it away.

01:03:26.000 --> 01:03:36.000
I mean, there are things in our cupboards that are 40 or 50 years old that you will never use,

01:03:36.000 --> 01:03:41.000
because to wash the dust off the bottom of the cup will take forever.

01:03:41.000 --> 01:03:49.000
But it's precious china given to you by your grandmother.

01:03:49.000 --> 01:03:52.000
At least when they used to mummify people, they used to put stuff like that also in.

01:03:52.000 --> 01:03:57.000
In our case, we don't even get that.

01:03:57.000 --> 01:04:00.000
So glean, give away.

01:04:00.000 --> 01:04:01.000
Give away.

01:04:01.000 --> 01:04:08.000
Give away those 84 plastic bags you've been saving up.

01:04:08.000 --> 01:04:22.000
Stand at shoppers and hand it out to people like me who are holding multiple things in our hands.

01:04:22.000 --> 01:04:29.000
Give to people that break bread into your life, like Abraham gave to Melchizedek.

01:04:29.000 --> 01:04:32.000
Give. You've broken bread and wine into my life.

01:04:32.000 --> 01:04:35.000
I just want to bless you with this.

01:04:35.000 --> 01:04:37.000
Give to those in need.

01:04:37.000 --> 01:04:46.000
Decide whether you want to lend to them or whether you want to give them, and then choose whichever one you want.

01:04:46.000 --> 01:04:53.000
While you're doing this, you can't say to Sheldon, hey Sheldon, I know I owe you 700 bucks, but I'm giving a lot, man.

01:04:53.000 --> 01:04:57.000
So I pray that the Lord will provide for you.

01:04:57.000 --> 01:05:02.000
No.

01:05:02.000 --> 01:05:08.000
Pay your debt.

01:05:08.000 --> 01:05:10.000
And lend and give.

01:05:10.000 --> 01:05:12.000
I remember this happened at Act 29.

01:05:12.000 --> 01:05:14.000
We used to be at Ross Street.

01:05:14.000 --> 01:05:20.000
A person comes up to me and says, I don't have rent to pay.

01:05:20.000 --> 01:05:22.000
And I said, don't worry, I'll pray for you.

01:05:22.000 --> 01:05:25.000
And in my pocket there are like $700.

01:05:25.000 --> 01:05:30.000
And I'm praying for them saying, amazing prayer.

01:05:30.000 --> 01:05:33.000
The more you don't want to give, the more amazing the prayer.

01:05:33.000 --> 01:05:35.000
And so I'm praying like crazy.

01:05:35.000 --> 01:05:40.000
Like I feel heat, man.

01:05:40.000 --> 01:05:43.000
And I'm saying, Jehovah Jireh, you will supply.

01:05:43.000 --> 01:05:44.000
And I can hear God.

01:05:44.000 --> 01:05:49.000
Everything I'm saying, God is saying through you, through you, through you.

01:05:49.000 --> 01:05:53.000
So finally, I thought to myself, this isn't working.

01:05:53.000 --> 01:05:54.000
So I stopped the prayer.

01:05:54.000 --> 01:05:57.000
I said, listen guys, here.

01:05:57.000 --> 01:06:00.000
I thought to myself, okay, I'm going to get the money or what.

01:06:00.000 --> 01:06:03.000
Sometimes it is through you, man.

01:06:03.000 --> 01:06:09.000
And now the problem was, I don't have the money to pay my rent.

01:06:09.000 --> 01:06:15.000
And so I go to a friend who lives in the same building,

01:06:15.000 --> 01:06:19.000
and I borrow money from him saying, can I borrow money to pay the rent?

01:06:19.000 --> 01:06:26.000
And I come back to my apartment and open the door,

01:06:26.000 --> 01:06:30.000
and there's an envelope under the door.

01:06:30.000 --> 01:06:35.000
I don't know who it came from, but it had the rent that I was supposed to pay.

01:06:35.000 --> 01:06:41.000
I thought to myself, Jacob, why do you always not wait for another hour

01:06:41.000 --> 01:06:45.000
so that you can see the brilliance of God?

01:06:45.000 --> 01:06:52.000
And so I went back, gave the person I borrowed from the money, and paid the rent.

01:06:52.000 --> 01:06:53.000
And what if it didn't happen?

01:06:53.000 --> 01:06:56.000
Well then, I'd have had to pay back what I borrowed

01:06:56.000 --> 01:06:58.000
because I was in a better position to borrow from someone

01:06:58.000 --> 01:07:07.000
than the person who came and asked me for the money.

01:07:07.000 --> 01:07:10.000
Otherwise, money can, mammon can turn us into orphans

01:07:10.000 --> 01:07:15.000
because it creates this fear of abandonment by God and by man.

01:07:15.000 --> 01:07:20.000
Money turns us into orphans because it has the ability to create fear of abandonment,

01:07:20.000 --> 01:07:22.000
fear of abandonment.

01:07:22.000 --> 01:07:26.000
This is so alive that it can create the fear of abandonment,

01:07:26.000 --> 01:07:29.000
both by your father and by people.

01:07:29.000 --> 01:07:32.000
It creates that fear that both are going to abandon.

01:07:32.000 --> 01:07:34.000
Money has that power.

01:07:34.000 --> 01:07:36.000
It renders you an orphan.

01:07:39.000 --> 01:07:41.000
Just be careful of that, eh?

01:07:41.000 --> 01:07:43.000
Any questions, guys? I'll stop here.

01:07:43.000 --> 01:07:47.000
I've got one other thing to say, but I'll say it off camera.

01:07:47.000 --> 01:08:03.000
Yeah, look, there's less hair here.

01:08:03.000 --> 01:08:11.000
You have to go over these points and pick the one that you can really work with.

01:08:11.000 --> 01:08:13.000
The one that I am presently working with is,

01:08:13.000 --> 01:08:16.000
I am wholly owned by him.

01:08:16.000 --> 01:08:20.000
Why am I assigning my rights to two masters?

01:08:20.000 --> 01:08:24.000
Why am I thinking that I'm on contract with him 20 hours a day

01:08:24.000 --> 01:08:27.000
and that I've got four hours where I can assign my rights to this?

01:08:27.000 --> 01:08:29.000
Why am I thinking like that?

01:08:29.000 --> 01:08:32.000
So what is it that affects you from all these points?

01:08:32.000 --> 01:08:35.000
Begin with that. Just take one point out of all these.

01:08:37.000 --> 01:08:39.000
For me, that is one.

01:08:40.000 --> 01:08:46.000
The other thing is that this can affect the trajectory of my life.

01:08:46.000 --> 01:08:51.000
I'm 57. I don't have as many years as I did 20 years ago.

01:08:51.000 --> 01:08:57.000
This can affect the trajectory of my life based on the evaluation I place on treasures.

01:09:00.000 --> 01:09:02.000
And can I afford it?

01:09:04.000 --> 01:09:07.000
So these are the things you have to consider.

01:09:07.000 --> 01:09:12.000
I can't bear the thought of getting into heaven and finding the things undone.

01:09:12.000 --> 01:09:16.000
I cannot. I do not like the thought.

01:09:18.000 --> 01:09:22.000
For us who are older, we've got to work on this faster.

01:09:22.000 --> 01:09:27.000
For those of you who are young, you've got to get old fast if you don't work on this.

01:09:27.000 --> 01:09:31.000
Really, I mean that. It wasn't even a pun.

01:09:32.000 --> 01:09:37.000
Money is a tyrannical master, but a great servant.

01:09:37.000 --> 01:09:42.000
You let it become your master when you're young, and it will make you old because it will make you work for it.

01:09:47.000 --> 01:09:52.000
If you can learn the art of both divesting and supporting, brilliant.

01:09:52.000 --> 01:09:57.000
But if not, decide which one you want to be and become detached with your possessions

01:09:57.000 --> 01:10:01.000
so that you can support others with it.

01:10:01.000 --> 01:10:05.000
I've met people like that. Just marvel at them.

01:10:05.000 --> 01:10:08.000
Detached. And here's the thing.

01:10:08.000 --> 01:10:13.000
The moment you're detached from money, it will beg to be your servant.

01:10:15.000 --> 01:10:22.000
The moment you're detached from money, money will beg, saying, please, please, can I be your servant?

01:10:22.000 --> 01:10:27.000
And the moment you're attached to money, it takes over as master.

01:10:28.000 --> 01:10:32.000
And it enslaves. This is not a master who's benevolent.

01:10:32.000 --> 01:10:35.000
This is a master who enslaves.

01:10:35.000 --> 01:10:39.000
Which is why, even as I'm talking, our minds are struggling with it.

01:10:39.000 --> 01:10:44.000
You must see the struggle of your mind, not as stewardship, but as enslavement.

01:10:44.000 --> 01:10:50.000
Please, please don't see the struggle in your mind right now as, oh, I'm going to be a slave.

01:10:50.000 --> 01:10:54.000
Don't see the struggle in your mind right now as, I'm being a good steward.

01:10:54.000 --> 01:10:57.000
No, you're being an enslaved steward.

01:10:57.000 --> 01:11:00.000
I just want to break that barrier down.

01:11:00.000 --> 01:11:06.000
Because there are different things we do during a teaching to prevent the truth from penetrating too far in.

01:11:06.000 --> 01:11:11.000
It's a trick. I want to expose it.

01:11:11.000 --> 01:11:17.000
So start there. I just pick one or two of these, and then I write them down and go over and over and over again.

01:11:17.000 --> 01:11:20.000
Maybe two weeks from now, I'll begin a change.

01:11:21.000 --> 01:11:24.000
Okay, can we switch the recording off?
