We started on this July 1st, 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:14.540 never got it completed, so I'm going to go down that route. So I always start these messages 00:00:14.540 --> 00:00:19.000 saying we're building a prevailing church, and by the word prevailing church what we 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:25.360 mean is we are trying to become a people that engages culture, that contends with culture, 00:00:25.360 --> 00:00:31.040 that overcomes culture, that engages culture, that contends with culture, that overcomes 00:00:31.040 --> 00:00:37.840 culture. I would like to say that when I hear stories and I hear stories from all of you 00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:43.800 at different points during the week, I find that all of us are doing it. Each of you individually 00:00:43.800 --> 00:00:50.400 in your own situations, workplaces, streets, are doing it individually. You are engaging 00:00:50.400 --> 00:00:57.360 people outside of the Christian community. You are contending for the faith and letting 00:00:57.360 --> 00:01:03.980 people know who Christ is, and you are overcoming the ways of this culture, and it's evident 00:01:03.980 --> 00:01:10.600 in your stories, but each of us is doing it individually. I would like us as a church 00:01:11.600 --> 00:01:23.400 together, or the word used is corporately, and individually. Because usually church works 00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:30.120 this way. People do things individually and it helps the church. I'm saying Acts 29 should 00:01:30.120 --> 00:01:46.520 have the ability to take on this city based on what God wants us to take on, and we must 00:01:46.520 --> 00:01:55.520 see and show people what it looks like. So one of the things I've been asking God is, 00:01:55.720 --> 00:02:02.720 Father, what impossible thing in Vancouver would you give to Acts 29 where we can take 00:02:02.720 --> 00:02:09.720 something that is impossible, engage it, contend with it, bring down Goliaths if necessary, 00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:17.240 and overcome the culture that this city presents in that area, and in the process, learn how 00:02:17.240 --> 00:02:23.080 you do things, and in the process, pay a cost for doing it, and in the process, show other 00:02:23.080 --> 00:02:29.380 churches and the world that this is how the kingdom works in a city. That's my desire. 00:02:29.380 --> 00:02:32.960 Each of us is doing it individually, and your stories are fascinating, but what does it 00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:38.980 look like when a whole people take this on? What does it look like when the church in 00:02:38.980 --> 00:02:45.360 Ephesus results in the folding up of the guilds of silversmiths and goldsmiths and blacksmiths 00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:52.360 because Diana is going out of business? No, no, no, no, don't look at her. I'm talking 00:02:53.720 --> 00:03:00.720 about the other, Artemis, because business is falling. What does it look like then? That 00:03:01.320 --> 00:03:08.320 is what I'm saying, Father, give us something impossible. And I'm doing it half with excitement 00:03:08.920 --> 00:03:12.720 like Jane was saying and half afraid because it would mean that there would be a cost to 00:03:12.720 --> 00:03:19.720 pay because the Goliaths are not easy to slay. You have to learn how to use the sling. 00:03:23.240 --> 00:03:27.000 So a prevailing church, and it's the only kind of church Jesus was building, is a church 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:32.680 that engages culture, that contends with culture, contends, requires some degree of battle, 00:03:32.680 --> 00:03:38.560 and then overcomes culture. Why does Jesus build a church like this? Because the prevailing 00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:45.560 church must take on the nature of its head. And Christ contended, endured, and overcame. 00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:52.080 Christ contended. Christ engaged by coming down to the earth. Christ contended by taking 00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:58.720 a stance. Christ endured by paying the cost. Christ overcame because he is an overcomer. 00:03:58.720 --> 00:04:04.280 And if that is the nature of the head, that should also be the nature of the body. And 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:09.000 so on one hand we are saying, yes, the great commissioners make disciples, but what kind 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:15.480 of disciples? We must make disciples that are overcomers. And the moment you use the 00:04:15.480 --> 00:04:21.700 word overcomer, you imply that there is a battle that must be endured and must be overcome. 00:04:21.700 --> 00:04:27.220 The moment you say overcomer, it implies that there is a battle. It implies that there is 00:04:27.220 --> 00:04:33.680 a battle. These are things that churches don't have the privilege to enter into. And I pray 00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:40.440 God that God grants us this privilege to enter into things called battles that he fights, 00:04:40.440 --> 00:04:47.440 but we hang on to his tailcoats as he runs amongst the enemy. And so do we really know 00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:57.480 what we are talking about? No. But can we learn it? Yes. And the thing with overcoming 00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:04.800 is Christ in his letters to the churches, the seven churches in the book of Revelation 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:10.560 kept saying, to him who overcomes, so he expects the church to overcome. But then he says, 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:17.320 to him who overcomes, I will give or I will grant. There is rewards for overcoming and 00:05:17.320 --> 00:05:22.320 the rewards are not material. The rewards are much, much richer than material stuff. 00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:29.800 Remember guys, it's always the things that are added unto you. Prosperity materially 00:05:29.880 --> 00:05:36.880 is always the things that are added unto you. The real riches are other things that today 00:05:37.020 --> 00:05:42.360 we'll talk about two of them, just two of them. Real riches and when you, I assure you 00:05:42.360 --> 00:05:45.720 if you taste the riches that we are going to talk about today, your life will never 00:05:45.760 --> 00:05:52.760 be the same. You can live on love and fresh air. No, you can't. I'm just saying that 00:05:53.480 --> 00:06:00.480 these riches that we are talking about are so tremendous that money would be nothing 00:06:00.660 --> 00:06:05.940 in comparison. You would actually believe that. Money is always something that is added 00:06:05.940 --> 00:06:12.940 unto us as we seek other more important things. Money is always added unto us. Jobs are always 00:06:13.900 --> 00:06:18.680 added unto us. Promotions are always added unto us. Any material prosperity is super 00:06:18.680 --> 00:06:25.420 important but it is something that is added unto you. It follows. And so the devil's only 00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:31.460 move when it comes to prosperity is instead of having it follow you, can I put it before 00:06:31.460 --> 00:06:38.460 you so that you're always running after it. And it's been highly successful. So what do 00:06:38.460 --> 00:06:45.460 overcomers overcome? What do overcomers overcome? Here are the three things overcomers overcome 00:06:48.260 --> 00:06:55.260 based on the word. One, they overcome seduction or temptation. Two, they overcome opposition 00:06:55.260 --> 00:07:02.260 by the devil and his forces, by satanic forces. And they overcome persecution by his agents 00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:21.180 here on earth, by human agents. And three, they overcome the strong, the strong, the 00:07:25.260 --> 00:07:32.260 strong cultural sway of the world. These then are the three things that the church will 00:07:38.940 --> 00:07:45.940 be forced to succumb to. And when I say church, I don't mean church as an organization, as 00:07:46.940 --> 00:07:51.160 the people of God. These are the things that they'll be forced to succumb to. And you see 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:57.440 it in your own lives. The first thing that we have to overcome is seduction and temptation. 00:07:57.440 --> 00:08:04.260 It could be something as simple as Jacob, do not be seduced by the time you squander 00:08:04.260 --> 00:08:08.960 on things that are not necessary even though I'm bringing you into greater things that 00:08:08.960 --> 00:08:14.040 need greater focus. Or do not be seduced by your job or your money. Do not be seduced 00:08:14.040 --> 00:08:21.040 by your lusts. Do not be seduced by illegitimate habits. Do not be seduced or tempted by your 00:08:21.160 --> 00:08:27.640 greed. That's the first thing overcomers overcome. And we see in the letters that Jesus writes 00:08:27.640 --> 00:08:31.960 to the church that these were things that the churches were going through. Where he 00:08:31.960 --> 00:08:38.960 says to one church, you've lost your first love. Some things seduced or tempted them 00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:46.280 to leave their first love. God was still important but he wasn't the one. The second thing that 00:08:46.280 --> 00:08:51.280 we as a people need to overcome is the opposition of the enemy. I hear your stories. I hear 00:08:51.280 --> 00:08:56.440 how pressure was put on you. You felt like folding. And then you rose up again and you 00:08:56.440 --> 00:09:01.560 said, oh God in the past I would have broken but I will stand and I will see your victory. 00:09:01.560 --> 00:09:06.720 You begin to speak like Moses saying, I stood and I saw the rescue of God. This church has 00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:12.200 had story after story of this. Well done. Well done church. With the little that you 00:09:12.520 --> 00:09:19.200 have made it much. Every face I look at I can think of stories. It's fascinating what 00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:24.000 God has been able to do through your life. And we have benefited as you shared these 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:28.280 stories. There is opposition that will come from satanic forces. But the one thing that 00:09:28.280 --> 00:09:34.240 this church has learned is to a degree to combat that and we will go further. And then 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:39.000 there is persecution that comes from human agents. We've not really felt that but we 00:09:39.080 --> 00:09:43.760 know the silence that begins to come over as the intimidation that comes over us in 00:09:43.760 --> 00:09:50.760 this culture. The silence and the intimidation are the weapons used in this culture to persecute 00:09:50.760 --> 00:09:55.080 Christianity and it's a mild form of persecution. There's no loss of life. There's just tremendous 00:09:55.080 --> 00:10:00.920 fear to stand up for God. But even that we shall break as we get the courage to speak 00:10:00.920 --> 00:10:06.640 for the one that we love. And this is the right time to speak and say something like 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:13.720 amen. Thank you. Next time try to do it without the cue. And the third thing is the strong 00:10:15.720 --> 00:10:20.560 cultural sway of the world. I know we've defined it again and again but it's so important to 00:10:20.560 --> 00:10:26.120 redefine it. Culture is the collective thinking of a people. There is a collective thinking 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:31.320 that Canada has. We see it expressed through the premier, through the prime minister. We 00:10:31.320 --> 00:10:35.680 see it expressed all around us. We see it expressed through the media. We see it expressed 00:10:35.680 --> 00:10:41.960 through education and entertainment. And to be able to stand against it is not easy. 00:10:41.960 --> 00:10:46.960 Particularly for your children to stand against it. You as a parent have to take a stance, 00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:53.960 eh? Because it's overwhelming the collective thinking of a nation at present. It's overwhelming. 00:10:57.040 --> 00:11:02.560 Teach your children how to stand. Now one of the ways to prevent them from being swept 00:11:02.560 --> 00:11:09.560 away by it is by preventing them from watching hours of meaningless TV. Regulate their television 00:11:12.400 --> 00:11:18.620 times because it is the one media through which edutainment educates and changes the 00:11:18.620 --> 00:11:24.520 minds of children. Calling good what is evil and calling evil what is good. Calling evil 00:11:24.520 --> 00:11:31.520 good. By changing standards, by lowering the neck line, raising the hemline with guys and 00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:37.240 with girls. I'm not thinking of girls in particular. Everything changes and it is done through 00:11:37.240 --> 00:11:41.640 audio visual means because that has always been the means through which the devil has 00:11:41.640 --> 00:11:46.760 used. The devil has attacked humans right from the garden of Eden where he starts off 00:11:46.760 --> 00:11:53.760 with this is pleasant to the eyes. Yeah, me being the age I am, when I say TV I mean all 00:11:53.760 --> 00:12:00.760 of social media because the word TV is shorter than social media. Though I do have a Twitter 00:12:06.560 --> 00:12:13.560 account and I had Snapchat for two weeks. I do have an Instagram account and a Facebook 00:12:14.760 --> 00:12:21.760 account. I'm with it though I've not posted for the last five years. So, I'm not going 00:12:23.760 --> 00:12:30.760 to post for the last five years. This is what prompted Jesus' letters to the seven churches 00:12:30.760 --> 00:12:34.880 saying hey guys these three things you're failing and there was only one church out 00:12:34.880 --> 00:12:40.200 of the seven that he did not say anything to in terms of failure. To every other church 00:12:40.200 --> 00:12:44.200 he was warning them listen you started a certain way, you've ended a certain way, you started 00:12:44.200 --> 00:12:48.400 in a certain way, you're going to end a certain way, you started a certain way but be careful 00:12:48.400 --> 00:12:53.480 you may end a certain way because you knew what was afoot. You think Jesus does not know 00:12:53.880 --> 00:13:00.880 what ails Acts 29 and what would he write in a letter to us? I'm not talking to a personal 00:13:00.920 --> 00:13:05.760 letter to all of us but what would he write to this church through this messenger what 00:13:05.760 --> 00:13:12.760 would he write to Acts 29 saying hey Acts 29 watch. What would it be? I have a few thoughts 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:29.000 but this is what I sometimes when I ask somebody hey do you have a word for the church? Sometimes 00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:33.960 it's not how wonderful we are that God may want to say. He may start off with this is 00:13:33.960 --> 00:13:39.880 how wonderful you are, these are your problems, change or otherwise oh and by the way I'm 00:13:39.880 --> 00:13:46.880 for you. That's the tone of the letter in the book of Revelation. Keep that in mind. 00:13:47.920 --> 00:13:52.680 So how do we overcome? How do we overcome? How do we overcome? One, according to the letters written in the 00:14:51.760 --> 00:14:57.760 book of Revelation by Jesus to the churches. Can you imagine this? God really didn't need 00:14:57.760 --> 00:15:02.720 to do this. But what kind of head of the body is this? What kind of Christ the Messiah is 00:15:02.720 --> 00:15:07.280 he that he actually takes time to write letters and then he writes letters and he actually 00:15:07.280 --> 00:15:13.280 uses postal service. He sends angels to the messengers in the church to read it out to 00:15:13.280 --> 00:15:19.440 the rest of the church and then it lives on forever. How amazing is this? These are actual 00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:26.600 letters written by Christ sent to us. Amazing eh? And so as you go through Revelation chapter 00:15:35.920 --> 00:15:40.920 2 verse 7 verse 11 verse 17 you see how do we overcome? The first thing we do if you 00:15:40.920 --> 00:15:46.160 want to overcome is we hear the Spirit. He keeps saying, Jesus keeps saying if you want 00:15:46.160 --> 00:15:53.160 to overcome he always prefaces it with let him who has ears hear what the Spirit is saying. 00:15:55.520 --> 00:16:01.280 Let him who has ears hear what the Spirit is saying. As a pastor or as one who leads 00:16:01.280 --> 00:16:07.180 a church it is critical for me to hear what the Spirit is saying. And these are the disciplines 00:16:07.180 --> 00:16:12.800 or these are the places I want to rise to not just for myself but for the sake of the 00:16:12.800 --> 00:16:18.040 body and for the sake of Christ. If you are leading a house church or involved in a house 00:16:18.040 --> 00:16:23.320 church and in some capacity as a leader or a contributor to a house church then you must 00:16:23.320 --> 00:16:30.320 learn how to hear the Spirit. And if you don't then we are the one to suffer because of that. 00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:36.960 If there is one thing you pray for me it is that oh God help him to keep hearing you keep 00:16:36.960 --> 00:16:41.680 rising to a level where he can hear you. Because if you don't hear the Spirit then what do 00:16:41.680 --> 00:16:48.680 you lead the body by? So the first one is hear the Spirit. Second be of good cheer. Be of good cheer. 00:16:55.800 --> 00:17:00.840 In John I think it was 14 or somewhere he says tribulations will come but be of good 00:17:00.840 --> 00:17:07.840 cheer for I have overcome. Be of good cheer. I have seen that in Acts 29. I hear you talking 00:17:07.840 --> 00:17:13.680 about things that are happening to you and yet you come and say though the victory shall 00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:18.020 not blossom yet I shall do cartwheels of joy and I will rejoice in the Lord for I know 00:17:18.020 --> 00:17:25.020 what is coming. Be of good cheer. This is another way of overcoming. John 16 33 talks 00:17:26.960 --> 00:17:33.960 about it because testing forces your life of faith of your faith life testing forces 00:17:34.120 --> 00:17:41.120 faith life into the open testing forces faith life into the open and it matures you so that 00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:48.440 you lack nothing. It's 1 Corinthians James 1 and 1 Corinthians something. James 1 talks 00:17:52.440 --> 00:17:59.440 about it. Yeah it's actually from James 1. That your faith life will be tested so that 00:17:59.640 --> 00:18:04.760 its colors can be seen in the open and when it is tested you will mature and you will 00:18:04.760 --> 00:18:09.840 lack nothing. Therefore if you want to overcome different people going through different situations 00:18:09.840 --> 00:18:16.840 here is there anybody who isn't? But one of the ways we overcome is to be of good cheer 00:18:18.320 --> 00:18:24.760 and to be of good cheer is to be joyful despite what is happening because you know that the 00:18:24.760 --> 00:18:30.840 final outcome and the final word always rests with him who put his own life down for yours 00:18:30.840 --> 00:18:37.840 and will never be separated from you. He'll always have an answer guys he'll always have 00:18:39.500 --> 00:18:45.280 an answer. He will always have an answer which then drives you to the first point but if 00:18:45.280 --> 00:18:51.520 he has an answer and I do not hear his spirit how do I go about figuring it out? Do not 00:18:51.520 --> 00:18:54.880 learn how to hear because you want to know the will of God. Learn how to hear because 00:18:54.880 --> 00:19:00.480 it is the only way to live. If you don't have his words what do you have? I don't want his 00:19:00.480 --> 00:19:06.160 will I just want to have a conversation with him on everything. I want to find out how 00:19:06.160 --> 00:19:12.660 he thinks. If I find out how he thinks then the will does not matter. Teach me to find 00:19:12.660 --> 00:19:18.840 out how you think oh God and every time you think oh God you put your power and your thinking 00:19:18.840 --> 00:19:24.840 into words help me to hear your words that's all I need. I shall hone my skill in this 00:19:24.840 --> 00:19:31.840 for the rest of my life oh God for your sheep hear your voice. Got a precedent in this guys 00:19:33.920 --> 00:19:40.560 there'll never be a day when we are there because there's always more to learn tomorrow. 00:19:40.560 --> 00:19:47.560 This is the most beautiful thing about Christianity you never get to a place where you have reached 00:19:47.880 --> 00:19:54.880 full knowledge. Third your faith how do you overcome your faith? Your faith that overcomes 00:20:04.480 --> 00:20:11.480 and conquers the world. Your faith that overcomes and conquers the world. Your faith keep increasing 00:20:11.480 --> 00:20:18.480 in it. Faith comes by hearing but grows by stretching. Faith comes by hearing but grows 00:20:21.520 --> 00:20:28.520 by stretching. Faith comes by hearing but grows by stretching. Ask God to invite you 00:20:30.040 --> 00:20:35.040 into things that will stretch your faith because otherwise it does not grow. Oh God 00:20:35.040 --> 00:20:40.040 now that I've learned this oh God would you now increase my faith. Oh God I have learned 00:20:40.080 --> 00:20:45.240 would you now increase my faith I've heard. Faith comes by hearing I have faith. Oh God 00:20:45.240 --> 00:20:52.240 would you please grow the faith by stretching me. Ask God to invite you into these things. 00:20:55.840 --> 00:21:02.840 A passive Christianity or a passive Christian does not go knocking on God's door for extra 00:21:02.840 --> 00:21:09.840 invitations. Passive Christianity finishes the work that is done and then sits because 00:21:09.840 --> 00:21:16.840 tomorrow work will come again. One of the problems with Mark as an employee is that 00:21:17.880 --> 00:21:24.200 he works at three times the speed that the other employees work at. Most of the people 00:21:24.200 --> 00:21:29.200 that work with him don't want him working with them because he finishes the work in 00:21:29.600 --> 00:21:36.600 half the time and then he goes asking for more work. He doesn't pace himself. Be like 00:21:40.600 --> 00:21:47.600 Mark. Finish things quickly and go to God saying what's the next hill you want me to 00:21:49.600 --> 00:21:56.600 take. I'm 85 I'm 80 but I want those hills where the anachs live. Hey if you want to 00:21:56.600 --> 00:22:01.120 take the hills where the anachs live. Hey if there was anybody who had the choice of 00:22:01.120 --> 00:22:08.120 land that he could have had like this because only he and Joshua did not go the route of 00:22:09.960 --> 00:22:15.160 the ten spies they could have had anything in the land and what does Caleb go and say 00:22:15.160 --> 00:22:22.160 give me the land where the anachs dwell but Caleb fears I know I'm 80 but give me the 00:22:23.160 --> 00:22:30.160 land they got chariots with iron wheels give me that land. That is active Christianity. 00:22:33.760 --> 00:22:40.760 Oh God give me another challenge oh God this ain't good enough. You know it's important 00:22:40.760 --> 00:22:47.760 to be soaked in the scripture. Jesus told the people who came to tempt him you err because 00:22:48.760 --> 00:22:55.760 you do not know the scripture. Yep. Guys here's what I'm saying. Active Christianity does 00:22:57.680 --> 00:23:02.840 not want to just do what you're doing right now. Imagine your son or daughter coming 00:23:02.840 --> 00:23:07.680 and saying daddy I finished this can you take me I want to jump two more meters higher or 00:23:07.680 --> 00:23:12.600 I want to jump 30 meters more I want to learn how to ride the bike without the side wheels 00:23:12.600 --> 00:23:17.720 or dad help me to ride with a pen or dad I don't want to just stir an egg I want to make 00:23:17.800 --> 00:23:24.800 an egg whatever people like doing the point is this which father does not want a child 00:23:25.440 --> 00:23:32.440 like that and choose to learn more.
