WEBVTT NOTE Podcast: Acts 29 Vancouver Episode: Power Surge Part 4 Publishing Date: 2024-05-12T06:04:44-07:00 Podcast URL: https://acts29.ca Episode URL: https://acts29.ca/power-surge-part-4/ 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:27.520 John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. 00:00:27.520 --> 00:00:36.720 So if we were to turn to our friend who got baptized yesterday and say that to him, what would that look like? 00:00:36.720 --> 00:01:02.720 The question then we have to ask is, is baptism in the Spirit a separate or distinct operation or event after salvation? 00:01:06.720 --> 00:01:10.720 That's a question that many books have been written on. 00:01:10.720 --> 00:01:20.720 And having come from a Pentecostal background, my thought process was yes it is, but over the years as you look at scripture, my answer is no. 00:01:20.720 --> 00:01:30.720 But it's a qualified no, meaning there are things that I want to add to it and we can have a time for questions if you want to. 00:01:30.720 --> 00:01:58.720 If you look at Acts chapter 2, let me put it this way, believers must have, and after that we look at scriptures, believers must have subsequent experiences of the Spirit. 00:01:58.720 --> 00:02:20.720 But such experiences should not be called receiving the gift of the Spirit. 00:02:20.720 --> 00:02:33.720 That's what I want to present to you, that is it a separate or distinct operation or an event that happens after salvation? 00:02:33.720 --> 00:02:38.720 Because that's what I grew up believing and that I preached, I taught. 00:02:38.720 --> 00:02:44.720 So if I ask the question again now, my answer would be no, but it would be a qualified no. 00:02:44.720 --> 00:02:49.720 Because I would say that believers must have subsequent experiences of the Spirit. 00:02:49.720 --> 00:03:00.720 They must have multiple occasions after salvation where they experience deep encounters with the Spirit. 00:03:00.720 --> 00:03:05.720 But such experiences should not be called receiving the gift of the Spirit. 00:03:05.720 --> 00:03:26.720 So if you go to Acts chapter 2, verse 38 and 39, Acts chapter 2, verse 38 and 39, reading from the NIV, Acts chapter 2, verse 38 and 39, 00:03:26.720 --> 00:03:28.720 Peter replied, 00:03:28.720 --> 00:03:54.720 So it's saying that if you repent and you receive the forgiveness of sins, you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:03:54.720 --> 00:04:08.720 And if you go to Ephesians 1.13, Ephesians 1.13, Ephesians 1.13 says, 00:04:08.720 --> 00:04:14.720 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, 00:04:14.720 --> 00:04:21.720 when you believed you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit. 00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:29.720 So the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to one who gets saved and who repents of his sin and is forgiven of his sin. 00:04:29.720 --> 00:04:31.720 He receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:39.720 And because the Holy Spirit is a person and not a quantity, you can't receive a bit of him and more of him later. 00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:45.720 You either receive him or you don't receive him, but you receive him when you get saved. 00:04:45.720 --> 00:04:51.720 But we must have subsequent encounters with the Holy Spirit, which we will talk about. 00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:59.720 So do you want to bring up different viewpoints? 00:04:59.720 --> 00:05:06.720 Please understand, there are some things that if Scripture informs you, we'll have to change it. 00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:13.720 Yeah, there's not much we can do if tomorrow Scripture convicts us that this way of thinking was wrong. 00:05:13.720 --> 00:05:18.720 This is the better, not wrong, this way of thinking was incomplete and this is a better position to take. 00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:22.720 So any questions or any thoughts on that? 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:28.720 If you want to shed your isms, okay, and just go with Scripture, 00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:34.720 because it is very hard for me to shed my charismaticism or Pentecostalism, 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:39.720 and it might be very hard for some to shed their Baptecostalism or whatever. 00:05:39.720 --> 00:05:49.720 So if we shed our isms and we looked at Scripture, would we be able to work with this or would it be a struggle? 00:05:49.720 --> 00:05:51.720 Go ahead, Jill. 00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:58.720 I have a question about the times when other places are in need of spiritual help, 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:02.720 or being so dependent on the Spirit and not having such incidents. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:06.720 Yeah. Oh, you're asking, are there such incidents? 00:06:06.720 --> 00:06:09.720 Yeah, there are. I will go through them. 00:06:09.720 --> 00:06:13.720 Different places where they were filled with the Holy Spirit and different words are used, 00:06:13.720 --> 00:06:16.720 but filled is one of the words that's often used. 00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:20.720 And then whenever the Holy Spirit came upon people in different parts of the Bible, 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:26.720 it was a new bunch of people, like in Samaria it was new, with the Gentiles it was new, 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:34.720 with the ones in Acts 19 who did not know that Jesus had risen because they were disciples of John, it was new. 00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:40.720 So there are occurrences in the Book of Acts where you see the Holy Spirit falling upon people like it in Acts 2, 00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:45.720 but they were different places because it's always Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria to the ends of the earth. 00:06:45.720 --> 00:06:47.720 The Spirit of God followed that pattern. 00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:51.720 And there are many places in the Book of Acts where you see this idea of filling, 00:06:51.720 --> 00:06:55.720 of baptizing or different words are used, immersing, filling. 00:06:55.720 --> 00:06:58.720 And we'll go over that. 00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:00.720 Go ahead, Chama. 00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:03.720 Ephesians 1.13. 00:07:03.720 --> 00:07:07.720 Yeah, 1.13. Yeah. 00:07:07.720 --> 00:07:11.720 Any other thoughts? 00:07:11.720 --> 00:07:16.720 Because the intent is not to say this one is wrong or that one is wrong. 00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:20.720 The intent is that this is what Scripture seems to indicate. 00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:23.720 And yet it's not saying that we... 00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:35.720 I'm saying we must have, must have experiences that are subsequent to salvation with the Holy Spirit that take us to another level. 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:36.720 Go ahead. 00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:42.720 So, everybody who repents becomes at the stake. 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:44.720 Receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:51.720 So then these experiences that we see subsequently in Acts will be a fresh outpouring? 00:07:51.720 --> 00:07:59.720 A fresh outpouring, a fresh filling, a fresh immersion, a fresh closing. 00:07:59.720 --> 00:08:01.720 Different words are used. 00:08:01.720 --> 00:08:03.720 And I'm using these words from Scripture. 00:08:03.720 --> 00:08:06.720 I'm not even pulling them out of my head. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:07.720 Yeah? 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:14.720 So let's look at them. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:17.720 The experience may come. 00:08:17.720 --> 00:08:20.720 So this experience that we are talking about, experiences of the Spirit, 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:40.720 they may come at the moment of conversion or a day later or a year later. 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:50.720 And an experience is not standard. 00:08:50.720 --> 00:09:01.720 But there will be evidence. 00:09:01.720 --> 00:09:11.720 It can't be that what the Spirit of God did for me is now the format that everybody in the church has to experience to acknowledge that, 00:09:11.720 --> 00:09:13.720 ha, the Holy Spirit has done that. 00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:14.720 It can be different. 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:15.720 It can be diverse. 00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:16.720 It can be various. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:18.720 And that's fine. 00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:19.720 But there must be evidence. 00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:21.720 Every experience has an evidence. 00:09:21.720 --> 00:09:25.720 I saw evidence of Evan's conversion. 00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:30.720 He picked up that towel and he started waving it like a crazy guy. 00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:33.720 And so there was evidence of the experience. 00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:34.720 Yeah? 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:38.720 So this will come up very often in some of these. 00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:43.720 Soon the leaves will disown you. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:52.720 So the experience may come in an unusual event after conversion, a moment, at the very moment, a minute, a day or a year later. 00:09:52.720 --> 00:10:18.720 And it will be followed by subsequent, more outpourings, fillings periodically throughout your life. 00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:29.720 Because you yield. 00:10:29.720 --> 00:10:33.720 The question is, if you are filled with the Holy Spirit, how can we have more filling? 00:10:33.720 --> 00:10:40.720 The greater the yielding, the greater the filling of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:46.720 No napkins here, no tissues. 00:10:46.720 --> 00:10:53.720 We have the Holy Spirit living in us. 00:10:53.720 --> 00:10:58.720 I'm going to lose my good coffee. 00:10:58.720 --> 00:10:59.720 It doesn't show as much. 00:10:59.720 --> 00:11:04.720 I'll drink one more sip. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:09.720 So what happens is the more we yield to the Spirit, the more we get filled. 00:11:09.720 --> 00:11:15.720 So if that is my degree of yielding, then that's how much of me gets filled. 00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:20.720 And if that is my degree of yielding, that's how much I get filled. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:27.720 And if that is my degree of yielding, then we don't drink this coffee anymore. 00:11:27.720 --> 00:11:34.720 Because I might drink it by mistake and then you'll watch me choke on it. 00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:42.720 Yeah, so subsequent outpourings, fillings will happen periodically throughout your life. 00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:48.720 I may come in various ways, various fillings, various blessings throughout a lifetime. 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:51.720 And it's sometimes unpredictable, sometimes predictable. 00:11:51.720 --> 00:12:03.720 I remember the first time after I got saved, I went up to my aunt's terrace and hadn't been to church for many, many years. 00:12:03.720 --> 00:12:09.720 I took some bread and some grape juice from a fridge, went and sat up on the terrace, opened the First Corinthians 11, 00:12:09.720 --> 00:12:14.720 and said, I haven't had communion for ages, oh God, you and I have communion. 00:12:14.720 --> 00:12:20.720 Broke bread, grape juice, took the guitar, knew the song Hallelujah, started playing, 00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:27.720 and suddenly I knew that God was there and I started speaking in tongues, singing in tongues. 00:12:27.720 --> 00:12:32.720 And no one prayed for me, no one made me pray faster, no one asked me to repeat anything. 00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:35.720 It was just a very natural experience. 00:12:35.720 --> 00:12:39.720 And so that was the first time I thought, wow. 00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:50.720 And then I remember years later, I was in a church in Bahrain and a man called Mike Hyman came up and he called me out. 00:12:50.720 --> 00:12:54.720 And he said, you have the gift of faith. And he told me you will serve the Lord. 00:12:54.720 --> 00:13:01.720 He calls me out, begins to pray for me. And I actually knew that day that I will never turn back again. 00:13:01.720 --> 00:13:08.720 That was a year and a half after getting saved. That day I knew that I will not turn back. 00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:11.720 It wasn't because I had some great strength not to turn back. 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:15.720 There was something that happened inside me where I thought, this is the rest of my life. 00:13:15.720 --> 00:13:21.720 It was in Feb. 1989 that it happened, or Feb. 1990. I don't remember. Most of you were not born then. 00:13:21.720 --> 00:13:24.720 And so that was the second experience. 00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:32.720 Fast forward, and I was at Richmond Pentecostal Church and a pastor called Mike, shorter than me, which is hard. 00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:41.720 And he came and he was a nobody. And he came and he said, anyone here who thinks they will serve the Lord full time, 00:13:41.720 --> 00:13:47.720 like no other stuff to do except this. And I felt I should go up. And he didn't even touch me. 00:13:47.720 --> 00:13:54.720 And before I knew it, I was on the floor, no touching, no drama, no emotions, nothing. 00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:58.720 And I knew something was transpiring because I couldn't get up. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:06.720 They had to leave. The entire church left. I can hear people saying, I think he's gone to sleep. 00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:12.720 And I'm thinking to myself, if I could only get up, I would punch you in the face. No, I didn't think that. 00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:16.720 And so finally the pastor brought me because I didn't have a car then. 00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:22.720 And so he said, Jacob, my wife is hungry. We will have to leave. I said, can you come back? 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:29.720 And so he took his wife and went. It was a deep work. And I remember God bringing up promises in my life saying, 00:14:29.720 --> 00:14:35.720 do you believe this? Will you ever not believe it? That was in 1994. 00:14:35.720 --> 00:14:41.720 And all those promises have come to pass. That is another subsequent feeling or encounter. 00:14:41.720 --> 00:14:45.720 All that was happening that night was God would take an area, let's say humility. 00:14:45.720 --> 00:14:53.720 And then he would show me me and my best at humility. And then he would show me Christ and his humility. 00:14:53.720 --> 00:15:00.720 And I just start bawling because there was such a huge difference between my best humility and Christ. 00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:04.720 And so something deep happened. I can give you an instance after instance. 00:15:04.720 --> 00:15:10.720 I'm just taking the first six years of my life as a believer. And these were not fabricated. 00:15:10.720 --> 00:15:16.720 These were not asked for. These were not something I thought would happen, but they were different and they keep happening. 00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:23.720 And each time there was a change. And this is not a unique Jacob experience. 00:15:23.720 --> 00:15:29.720 If I ask people around this church right now, they would stand up and they would say the same thing. 00:15:29.720 --> 00:15:35.720 So any questions on that? 00:15:35.720 --> 00:15:45.720 What if you don't get a full and full experience after New Testament? 00:15:45.720 --> 00:15:55.720 Yeah. What if you don't? Then ask. Because the Bible seems to indicate that there were these fillings and outpourings often enough. 00:15:55.720 --> 00:16:03.720 So it was normative for the New Testament church. If it is normative for the New Testament church and it's not happening in my life, I should ask. 00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:14.720 I should ask. And so in the New Testament, most of these occasions were accompanied by either prophesying or speaking in tongues. 00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:19.720 I'm saying that there's more than that because we aim at those two gifts. 00:16:19.720 --> 00:16:23.720 And if we have those gifts, we think we now have the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:23.720 --> 00:16:27.720 The gift of the Holy Spirit was received the moment you got saved. 00:16:27.720 --> 00:16:32.720 Our friend received the gift of the Holy Spirit yesterday. 00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:39.720 He has very little background in other than going to schools in this faith. 00:16:39.720 --> 00:16:42.720 Yet he received the gift of the Holy Spirit yesterday. 00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:52.720 Oh, not yesterday. Whenever he got saved. Sorry. Yeah. 00:16:52.720 --> 00:16:58.720 Baptism and salvation are not connected that way. And so he received that. 00:16:58.720 --> 00:17:03.720 And so now the thing is one should expect subsequent fillings. 00:17:03.720 --> 00:17:10.720 And if that is not your experience, one should ask for it because the Holy Spirit must be experienced. 00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:19.720 The reason Christianity is becoming sterile is because Christians are not experiencing the reality of the Spirit. 00:17:19.720 --> 00:17:27.720 There is some reality happening there. Yeah. 00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:34.720 Who's in charge today? Sheldon? I had a strange feeling it was Sheldon. 00:17:34.720 --> 00:17:47.720 Yeah. So one must begin to ask for the experience because to have the Holy Spirit is to have a reality that one experiences. 00:17:47.720 --> 00:18:05.720 To have the Holy Spirit, to have the Holy Spirit is to have the reality of experiences. 00:18:05.720 --> 00:18:12.720 Academia has the ability to make it historical, academic, factual, biblical. 00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:19.720 And yet the very book is called not the biblical account of the Holy Spirit, but the acts of the Holy Spirit. 00:18:19.720 --> 00:18:31.720 It's experienced. And so if we are not experiencing it, praise God, that's why we teach and learn so that we can experience it. 00:18:31.720 --> 00:18:33.720 Go ahead, Anna. Sorry, I saw your hand. 00:18:42.720 --> 00:19:07.720 Yeah. 00:19:07.720 --> 00:19:13.720 Yeah. So I mean, when you married George, you didn't get a first installment. 00:19:13.720 --> 00:19:18.720 Sometimes you wish you had just gotten it in installment, but you got all of them and now you're stuck with them. 00:19:18.720 --> 00:19:24.720 Oh, I repeat the question. The question was when I married George, how come I didn't? 00:19:24.720 --> 00:19:34.720 The question was the background that Anna comes from and that I come from. 00:19:34.720 --> 00:19:40.720 The understanding was that you receive the first installment of the Spirit when you're born again. 00:19:40.720 --> 00:19:45.720 And then as you mature, you receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. 00:19:45.720 --> 00:19:50.720 And while there are incidents in the scriptures that seem to indicate that, 00:19:50.720 --> 00:19:58.720 the truth of the scripture seems to say that, not seems to say, says that the gift of the Holy Spirit is received when you receive Christ. 00:19:58.720 --> 00:20:09.720 And so when it comes to speaking in tongues, sometimes people don't speak in tongues not because of any other reason, 00:20:09.720 --> 00:20:14.720 but because you sometimes are raised saying tongues is not to be spoken in. 00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:17.720 Or sometimes you're raised saying tongues is of the devil. 00:20:17.720 --> 00:20:21.720 Sometimes there's a block in terms of speaking. 00:20:21.720 --> 00:20:24.720 Sometimes you insist on speaking in English and cannot speak in tongues. 00:20:24.720 --> 00:20:27.720 I've seen guys struggle for years and then one day it breaks forth. 00:20:27.720 --> 00:20:29.720 I do not have an explanation for it. 00:20:29.720 --> 00:20:36.720 All I know is because it's a gift of tongues and it edifies a person, it is not going to be held back by God, 00:20:36.720 --> 00:20:40.720 because God won't say Sue can have it, Echo can't have it, Heidi can have it, Gillian can't have it. 00:20:40.720 --> 00:20:44.720 Any, many, many more is not tongues. It's just a poem. 00:20:44.720 --> 00:20:49.720 Yeah. So it won't be held back because it's a gift that edifies everybody. 00:20:49.720 --> 00:20:53.720 A father does not hold back a gift that strengthens everyone. 00:20:53.720 --> 00:21:01.720 So I go back to that old question, which is a very unsatisfactory answer, but kind of may help. 00:21:01.720 --> 00:21:07.720 Can all drive cars? Yes. 00:21:07.720 --> 00:21:10.720 Do all drive cars? No. 00:21:10.720 --> 00:21:13.720 Can all speak in tongues? Yes. 00:21:13.720 --> 00:21:17.720 Do all speak in tongues? No. 00:21:17.720 --> 00:21:20.720 Then here's the other thing. 00:21:20.720 --> 00:21:25.720 Is it possible to speak in tongues and behave like the devil? Yes. 00:21:25.720 --> 00:21:31.720 Is it possible to not speak in tongues and behave like Christ? Yes. 00:21:31.720 --> 00:21:40.720 I have met elders who speak in tongues and had slept with at least 13 women in the church. 00:21:40.720 --> 00:21:45.720 I know them because we were casting demons out of them. 00:21:45.720 --> 00:21:50.720 So, go ahead. 00:21:50.720 --> 00:21:52.720 Yeah, totally. 00:21:52.720 --> 00:22:02.720 That's why Jesus said that you've gone around healing, casting out demons, but I don't even know you. 00:22:02.720 --> 00:22:09.720 So yes, the evidence in the New Testament was speaking in tongues and prophesying and living the way Christ wants us to live. 00:22:09.720 --> 00:22:12.720 And I do believe that the same thing holds good today too. 00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:15.720 We should use that because that's scriptural precedent. 00:22:15.720 --> 00:22:20.720 So we don't want to devalue the speaking of tongues as evidence or prophesying as evidence. 00:22:20.720 --> 00:22:23.720 We don't want to devalue that. 00:22:23.720 --> 00:22:29.720 But that is not the one measure. 00:22:29.720 --> 00:22:42.720 Yeah. 00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:45.720 What song is that? 00:22:45.720 --> 00:22:51.720 Oh, Jump Jump Jump in the River. 00:22:51.720 --> 00:23:01.720 Oh, he must be doing his funky dance thing. 00:23:01.720 --> 00:23:07.720 So to have the Holy Spirit is to have a reality of one's experience. Why? 00:23:07.720 --> 00:23:10.720 Because guys, please try and memorize this. 00:23:10.720 --> 00:23:25.720 The Holy Spirit or Holy Spirit, depending on how you want to say it, Holy Spirit is God's empowering presence. 00:23:25.720 --> 00:23:36.720 If he is God's powerful presence or God's power giving presence, how can we have him and not experience him? 00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:39.720 He's God's empowering presence. 00:23:39.720 --> 00:23:49.720 And if he is God's empowering presence, how can I walk with him if I don't experience him? 00:23:49.720 --> 00:23:56.720 And what do you mean, Jacob? 00:23:57.720 --> 00:24:02.720 His Holy Spirit is more like a renewed mind or a conscious mind. 00:24:02.720 --> 00:24:07.720 So what is the difference between a renewed mind and a renewed mind? 00:24:27.720 --> 00:24:34.720 He's a person. It would be like, let's say I want to be like you. 00:24:34.720 --> 00:24:39.720 I can read books about you. I can watch you and try to imitate you. 00:24:39.720 --> 00:24:43.720 But the best way would be if your spirit came into me. 00:24:43.720 --> 00:24:50.720 And if your spirit came into me, I'd immediately be in a comb my hair like you, wear your clothes, walk like you, talk like you, ask questions like you. 00:24:50.720 --> 00:24:53.720 Everything would be like you because your spirit has come into me. 00:24:53.720 --> 00:24:58.720 So it's not that now I have a renewed mind. I have the spirit of Abhishek inside me. 00:24:58.720 --> 00:25:00.720 That changes me completely. 00:25:00.720 --> 00:25:06.720 So the idea of the Holy Spirit is that the spirit of Christ now dwells in me so that I may become like Christ. 00:25:06.720 --> 00:25:13.720 Now I begin to renew my mind because his spirit lives in me, but my mind thinks like myself. 00:25:13.720 --> 00:25:21.720 And now I begin to read the word so that my mind begins to correspond to the way the spirit of God thinks. 00:25:21.720 --> 00:25:25.720 That's renewing of the mind. So the spirit of God is not a renewed mind. 00:25:25.720 --> 00:25:32.720 Yeah? And so when it comes to the Holy Spirit being God's empowering presence, we must experience it. 00:25:32.720 --> 00:25:35.720 So what does it mean to experience the Holy Spirit's presence? 00:25:35.720 --> 00:25:43.720 Experience it like, let's ask Thuuni, what do you experience about Anilay? 00:25:43.720 --> 00:25:48.720 All righty, moving on. 00:25:48.720 --> 00:25:55.720 Okay, so Thuuni experiences Anilay's occasional elbow when he's doing wrong. 00:25:55.720 --> 00:26:01.720 Thuuni experiences Anilay's, come here, Abu.
