It's another 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:21.780 thing to at least begin to grapple with the idea of what does resurrection life look like 00:00:21.780 --> 00:00:34.160 for us? And we need to understand that Jesus' death was not proof enough, Jesus' death 00:00:34.160 --> 00:00:44.620 was not proof enough that our sins were taken away. It wasn't proof enough that our sins 00:00:44.620 --> 00:00:52.420 were taken away. Because anybody can die and say, I've taken your sins away. So Jesus' 00:00:52.420 --> 00:01:03.360 death was not proof enough that our sins were taken away by a sinless man. If that sinless 00:01:03.360 --> 00:01:16.780 man was really sinless, he would have to rise from the dead. It is important to understand 00:01:16.780 --> 00:01:23.320 Jesus' death was not proof enough that our sins were taken away. If someone is sinless, 00:01:23.320 --> 00:01:29.640 he must rise from the grave. And so his death was not enough. If he didn't rise, we'd just 00:01:29.720 --> 00:01:36.920 be hazarding a guess that Jesus actually took our sins away. He had to rise. If he didn't 00:01:36.920 --> 00:01:46.320 rise, it just meant that a good man died and that's about it. So Jesus' death was not proof 00:01:46.320 --> 00:01:57.680 enough that our sins were taken away by a sinless one. If the sin bearer was sinless, 00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:07.280 if the sin bearer was sinless, then resurrection would prove it. Then resurrection would prove 00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:16.440 it. Because the wages of sin are death and if he was actually sinless, as it says in 00:02:16.440 --> 00:02:21.200 Acts chapter 2, it would be impossible for sin to hold him down because only a sinless 00:02:21.200 --> 00:02:26.080 man could rise from the dead after dying for the sins of the others. Here's the thing, 00:02:26.480 --> 00:02:31.880 I don't know if you've ever tried this, but this is worth trying. Summer is coming, you'll 00:02:31.880 --> 00:02:37.560 have flies that fall dead on your floor at some point. Take one of those flies, put it 00:02:37.560 --> 00:02:43.800 in the palm of your hand or on the table and command it to come back to life. Just so you 00:02:43.800 --> 00:02:51.440 realize how absolutely powerless you are to revive anything from the dead. It's one thing 00:02:51.440 --> 00:02:58.760 to deal with a human. Start with a fly. Take that fly, put it on the table and then pray 00:02:58.760 --> 00:03:06.760 fast, worship, do whatever you want and command that fly in the name of Jesus Christ to come 00:03:06.760 --> 00:03:14.280 back to life and you will see how futile it is, how impossible it is for anything to come 00:03:14.280 --> 00:03:23.160 back from the dead. Somehow, I don't think we as Christians have been able to grasp the 00:03:23.160 --> 00:03:29.000 impossibility of what has happened because one minute before he rose from the dead, he was a 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:39.320 cold body on a cold slab in a tomb. I had to transport my dad's body from one city to the other 00:03:39.320 --> 00:03:46.560 in one of those ambulances and it is the most dead thing in the world, a dead person. Their 00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:51.360 skin doesn't feel the same. People want to come and kiss the person's face and you kiss the person's 00:03:51.360 --> 00:03:58.200 face and I'm thinking to myself, dad, this isn't you. This is so not real. It's not alive. Jesus 00:03:58.200 --> 00:04:03.800 was as dead as that. There was nothing special about his death. He was dead like most people die. 00:04:03.800 --> 00:04:09.800 He was on a cold slab in a dark cave and he was dead one minute before he rose up. 00:04:09.800 --> 00:04:21.920 And he has a strange thing about his death. He lies there dead with the sins of what? Eight billion 00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:28.760 into three, twenty-four billion people. Every conceivable sin you can think of because he's 00:04:28.760 --> 00:04:36.560 bearing the sins of the entire universe. Not one or two people, not just my sins. Let's assume there 00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:40.240 have been twenty-four billion people that have lived on the earth. That's maybe much more than 00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:45.800 actually may have lived. But let's assume that for a second. He bears on himself all their sins and 00:04:45.800 --> 00:04:53.760 now he's supposed to rise from the dead. He knew it was impossible. So at one point in the Psalms, 00:04:53.760 --> 00:04:58.960 David prophesied and later Jesus says it where he says, I know that you will not abandon me to 00:04:58.960 --> 00:05:05.440 Sheol. What was he trying to say? That I know what I'm going to do and I know how dead I'll be and I 00:05:05.440 --> 00:05:16.720 know you will not abandon me. And then it says in Romans 8 verse 11 that if the spirit of him, 00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:28.440 it was the spirit of God that comes and empowers Jesus to rise. It is an impossible thing guys. 00:05:28.440 --> 00:05:36.160 One of the things that's happened to us is we just think, oh he's Jesus. The answer to everything is 00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:46.000 he is Jesus. When he had spent three days there, he just decided time to wake up. It was impossible. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:53.600 Just two things made it possible. One, that he did not sin because the wages of sin is death. 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:59.720 Why did Jesus rise from the dead? Very simple. You could not pay him the wages of sin. So it 00:05:59.720 --> 00:06:07.720 was impossible for death to hold him. Two, that then allowed the Holy Spirit to power him back 00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:18.840 to life with a life called resurrection life. Just think of that for a second. This is impossible guys. 00:06:22.760 --> 00:06:29.480 He didn't do it because he was Jesus. He did it because of these two things that I mentioned to you. 00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:37.320 One minute he was cold and a dead body on a slab inside a tomb and then the father raised the son 00:06:37.320 --> 00:06:46.520 by the spirit. Romans 8-11. You know when you think of the Old Testament, we imagine and marvel 00:06:46.520 --> 00:06:54.040 at God's power that brought Israel out of Egypt. We've seen Ben-Hur, we've seen Ten Commandments, 00:06:54.040 --> 00:06:59.800 and we kind of imagine the plagues and the Red Sea parting. In the Old Testament, the standard 00:06:59.800 --> 00:07:07.000 of God's deliverance was the Red Sea crossing and the Exodus. And we can imagine that. But we 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:15.560 can't imagine the mighty power that was mightier than what happened in the Exodus at work in a dark 00:07:15.560 --> 00:07:24.200 tomb. We can't even imagine that. It was greater than the Exodus. It was greater than the Red Sea. 00:07:24.200 --> 00:07:29.400 It was greater than all the plagues. You were dealing with one Pharaoh, one tyrant. Here you 00:07:29.400 --> 00:07:35.720 were dealing with an entire tyrannical system that now would either exist or would begin to 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:40.520 get dismantled if this man was raised. That's the power at work in that little tomb that day. 00:07:42.600 --> 00:07:46.680 The crazy thing is that's the kind of power that dwells in every believer sitting here, 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:52.440 but we'll come there a little later. And so the standard in the New Testament for God's power 00:07:53.080 --> 00:07:59.480 is the mighty strength exerted by God that delivered his son Jesus out of death. 00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:10.120 You read about it in Ephesians 1, 19 and 20. Go to Ephesians 1, 19 and 20. Ephesians 1, 19 and 20. 00:08:15.320 --> 00:08:21.560 Paul says, say listen, ask that your eyes be open. Why? So that you can see the immeasurable 00:08:21.560 --> 00:08:28.680 greatness of God's power towards us who believe. And what's he comparing it to? He's comparing it 00:08:28.680 --> 00:08:34.040 to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead. 00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:43.880 And it's almost this parallel to Exodus. There's this ravenous bondage called Egypt that eats up 00:08:43.880 --> 00:08:51.080 Israel. And God used to call Israel my son. And God delivers them from Egypt. And he doesn't just 00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:55.560 deliver them from Egypt and says, well, now you're free. Go do what you want. He takes them into the 00:08:55.560 --> 00:09:01.720 promised land. And now there's another ravenous bondage that's happening that night on Friday 00:09:01.720 --> 00:09:10.600 night, Saturday, where Christ now has to be broken from the bondage and then taken to a throne that 00:09:10.600 --> 00:09:17.560 is placed above everything that exists. So you're talking about a dead man who's carrying the sins 00:09:17.560 --> 00:09:22.760 of the world, being broken out of that, and then not just broken out of that, raised and given a 00:09:22.760 --> 00:09:27.560 name that is above every other name, sitting in the highest throne that exists in the universe. 00:09:27.560 --> 00:09:32.280 That is the power at work. And the strange thing is that is the power that is resident in you. 00:09:33.240 --> 00:09:40.440 How we, we have to experience it on a daily basis. Otherwise it becomes a resurrection Sunday thing. 00:09:42.360 --> 00:09:48.760 See, the odd thing is death wouldn't have done it. A resurrection was necessary. Think of it this way. 00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:58.920 Imagine that you are a stillborn. Imagine you're a stillborn. And let's just take me. So I'm a 00:09:58.920 --> 00:10:10.840 stillborn baby and I am in a womb. And the name of the womb is death, the wages of sin. 00:10:10.840 --> 00:10:20.920 So I'm a stillborn. I have a name. And my mother's womb is called death, the wages of sin. 00:10:23.800 --> 00:10:30.120 This is the condition of every human being. You're born in sin. You're born under the penalty of death. 00:10:30.120 --> 00:10:41.560 What does Jesus's death do? Jesus's death breaks open the womb. 00:10:44.040 --> 00:10:45.720 It doesn't give life to the stillborn. 00:10:47.720 --> 00:10:54.680 Jesus's death breaks open the womb called the wages of sin. That's what it does. 00:10:55.400 --> 00:11:01.560 Jesus's death breaks open the womb called the wages of sin. But that's only part of the story 00:11:01.560 --> 00:11:07.080 because what follows is perhaps a greater miracle. Because the stillborn is raised from the dead 00:11:08.040 --> 00:11:15.640 and given life by the same spirit who raised Christ from the dead. What Christ's death does is 00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:26.040 his death ends our captivity inside death. If you read Hebrews chapter 2 verse 14 and 15, it says so. 00:11:26.040 --> 00:11:32.920 In Hebrews 2, 14 and 15, it says, and Jesus came to abolish death. Jesus came to destroy the one 00:11:32.920 --> 00:11:38.520 who uses death as a weapon. And Jesus came to set people free from the fear of death. In those two 00:11:38.520 --> 00:11:44.680 verses, Hebrews 2, 14 and 15, three things happened. I came to abolish death, not mitigate death, 00:11:45.400 --> 00:11:51.480 not make death a little easier. Abolish death. I came to destroy the one who has used death 00:11:51.480 --> 00:11:59.480 as a weapon against humans. And I came to end the fear that people have of death. You know, 00:11:59.480 --> 00:12:06.040 one of the reasons resurrection should have us become bolder is now even death does not hold 00:12:06.040 --> 00:12:12.360 a threat for us. It doesn't hold a threat. What can you do? Kill me? 00:12:17.320 --> 00:12:24.040 We'll talk about that tomorrow. But he sets us free from this womb called death, the wages of sin. 00:12:24.840 --> 00:12:31.880 Strange thing is there's a parallel to this that actually happened in Matthew 27. 00:12:32.840 --> 00:12:38.920 And here's what happens in Matthew 27, verse 52 onwards. And the temple and the curtain in the 00:12:38.920 --> 00:12:49.400 temple tore. And the tombs in Jerusalem broke open. That's it. Nobody comes out of the tombs. 00:12:49.960 --> 00:12:57.640 The tombs broke open. There was an earthquake. You should read it. It's fascinating. 00:12:58.600 --> 00:13:01.720 Matthew 27, verse 52 onwards. 00:13:05.240 --> 00:13:10.520 Let's start at verse 51. At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top 00:13:10.520 --> 00:13:18.520 to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open. And the bodies of many 00:13:18.520 --> 00:13:24.840 holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs. And after Jesus' 00:13:24.840 --> 00:13:28.840 resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. So this is the 00:13:28.840 --> 00:13:32.200 question you need to keep in mind. Jesus dies. 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:39.240 Saints' tombs open. 00:13:43.320 --> 00:13:47.240 Jesus' tomb opens. 00:13:50.120 --> 00:13:51.240 Jesus is raised. 00:13:55.240 --> 00:13:56.280 Saints are raised. 00:14:01.960 --> 00:14:03.240 And there are eyewitnesses. 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:09.160 It's kind of the same thing we're talking about. There was a womb called death 00:14:10.440 --> 00:14:16.680 that had us locked in. That womb broke open, just like the tombs broke open. 00:14:17.400 --> 00:14:24.680 But the stillborn is still a stillborn. A time will come when after Christ rises from the dead, 00:14:24.920 --> 00:14:28.520 those that were in the tombs came out. Till then, they did not come out. 00:14:31.400 --> 00:14:36.360 When they came out, you're talking about people that were recognized, that were familiar. 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:43.720 You can imagine on Sunday morning like today, Jerusalem actually witnessed a resurrection. 00:14:45.160 --> 00:14:50.200 And the resurrection they witnessed was not that of Christ, but uncles and aunties that were coming 00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:56.920 out of graves. And these were recent deaths. They were not long ago. It was the time of barley 00:14:56.920 --> 00:15:02.840 harvest and they would have been leaving the city, going out to harvest their barley. And they see 00:15:02.840 --> 00:15:12.280 Uncle John and Auntie Helga or whoever coming down the road. And these are people that have died, 00:15:12.280 --> 00:15:17.480 that have come out of their tombs. And it says they go back into the holy city. They go into Jerusalem 00:15:17.480 --> 00:15:25.080 and they met people. People saw them. The only question is, did they die again like Lazarus, 00:15:25.080 --> 00:15:30.360 which is one theory that's offered. But I would suggest to you that they did not die like Lazarus 00:15:30.360 --> 00:15:37.960 did. They were around for the next 40 days till Jesus ascended. And when Jesus ascended, 00:15:37.960 --> 00:15:42.760 they ascended with him. What's the parallel here? 00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:49.400 They had to wait till Christ rose and came out of the tomb. In the same way, the stillborn called 00:15:49.400 --> 00:15:57.560 Jacob may have escaped the womb of death, but he had to wait till the power of the Spirit of God 00:15:57.560 --> 00:16:04.680 raised him up just like it raised Christ up. And Sede the Sadducee sees his uncle walking down the road. Now what does Sede the 00:17:22.680 --> 00:17:35.400 Sadducee do? It's crazy. I think I've told you this. I know some of us have met her. She came to 00:17:35.400 --> 00:17:44.760 Acts 29 long ago. Her name is Farah. Farah is a five-foot lady who lives in Indonesia in a little 00:17:44.760 --> 00:17:49.960 village there. People don't call her for funerals anymore because she's raised two people from the 00:17:49.960 --> 00:17:55.880 dead. And some of the people she raised from the dead, they did not want back a life. It was 00:17:57.080 --> 00:18:04.040 really obnoxious uncles and aunts that were raised. And so when people die now, they don't call her. 00:18:04.040 --> 00:18:11.560 They just ask another pastor to bury them. But in this case, the Sadducees must have really had a 00:18:11.560 --> 00:18:17.480 different take on it because they would have seen people that they knew coming out of the grave. 00:18:20.520 --> 00:18:25.000 So if Jesus had not risen from the dead, 00:18:26.680 --> 00:18:32.920 then the breaking of the tomb or the breaking of the womb is not enough. It's not enough to come out 00:18:32.920 --> 00:18:40.840 of the penalty of death. I need life. The stillborn is still a stillborn till God injects life. And so 00:18:41.800 --> 00:18:50.840 that's where the story really begins because the stillborn is now resurrected 00:18:53.640 --> 00:18:54.440 with new life. 00:18:58.440 --> 00:19:03.080 And it's as different as a butterfly is from a caterpillar. It's a completely different life. 00:19:03.080 --> 00:19:08.440 So here's what scriptures say about it. If you look at 1 Peter 1, 23, it says, 00:19:08.440 --> 00:19:21.480 your new life is not like your old life. Your new birth, 00:19:26.040 --> 00:19:33.720 your new birth comes from God's living Word. 00:19:34.520 --> 00:19:39.000 A life conceived by God himself. 00:19:44.120 --> 00:19:51.400 This is 1 Peter 1, 23. I think it's the NLT. I'm not sure. But here's the thing, guys. 00:19:52.200 --> 00:19:56.200 When we talk about new life, you have to think about what's actually resident in you right now. 00:19:57.160 --> 00:20:01.400 If you have given your life to Christ right now, resident in you. 00:20:01.400 --> 00:20:07.960 Not tomorrow, not when you go to heaven, not when you speak in tongues, right now. Anybody 00:20:07.960 --> 00:20:16.680 who's a believer has this happening to them. 1 Peter 1, 23. Stillborn, the person that was 00:20:16.680 --> 00:20:24.040 dead is now resurrected with new life. What is that life like? Your new life is not like your old life. 00:20:24.360 --> 00:20:29.640 Then it says, your new birth comes from God's living Word. You know, it says in 1 Corinthians 15, 00:20:29.640 --> 00:20:38.920 that when Adam was created, he was a living soul. But when Jesus began to recreate you by entering 00:20:38.920 --> 00:20:45.320 into your life, you became a life-giving spirit. One was a living soul. The other one is a life-giving 00:20:45.800 --> 00:20:57.000 spirit. Spirit. There's no comparison, guys. But here's the thing. This is the life that's resident 00:20:57.000 --> 00:21:03.880 in him right now. And it's not like the life hip used to have before. 00:21:03.880 --> 00:21:04.440 Now, 00:21:08.520 --> 00:21:09.320 now the scripture. 00:21:15.320 --> 00:21:25.000 Romans 8, 11. Romans 8, 11. It says, the spirit of him, 00:21:25.320 --> 00:21:35.560 the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead 00:21:38.920 --> 00:21:50.840 is living in you and actually has become one with you. Again, 00:21:50.840 --> 00:22:00.360 the spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead is who is living in him. Nobody else, 00:22:01.800 --> 00:22:12.760 no old hip, no old life. The only person living in him is the spirit of him who raised Jesus 00:22:12.760 --> 00:22:19.800 from the dead. There is nobody else in there. It's a completely new life, guys. 00:22:21.400 --> 00:22:27.160 And the sooner I get used to thinking like this, the sooner I get to behave like him, 00:22:28.040 --> 00:22:36.840 do like him, think like him. It's a shame when I'm born again, but I think that there are 00:22:37.480 --> 00:22:42.760 two lives I can live. I only have one. This is the same 00:23:09.160 --> 00:23:15.640 mighty power. This is the same mighty power 00:23:18.200 --> 00:23:27.560 as in the Holy Spirit. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead 00:23:32.600 --> 00:23:35.160 and seated him 00:23:38.680 --> 00:23:44.040 at God's right hand in the heavens. 00:23:47.400 --> 00:23:49.720 Then he goes on to say in Ephesians 2, 6, 00:23:53.720 --> 00:23:57.320 he raised us from the dead 00:24:01.480 --> 00:24:02.440 along with Christ 00:24:02.440 --> 00:24:05.800 and seated us 00:24:10.760 --> 00:24:19.800 in the heavens with Christ. Let's go back to him. 00:24:19.800 --> 00:24:21.160 Let's go back to him. 00:24:26.360 --> 00:24:36.760 The same mighty power that was able to take Jesus off that cold slab is the same mighty power, 00:24:36.760 --> 00:24:45.160 exactly the same mighty power that now has raised him. Same mighty power, nothing else. 00:24:45.800 --> 00:24:51.320 And the same power that raised Christ and seated him in the heavens is the same power 00:24:51.320 --> 00:24:53.960 that has raised hip and seated him in the heavens 00:24:57.400 --> 00:25:05.240 with Jesus. This is reality. It's not positional whatever. It is real. 00:25:07.640 --> 00:25:11.880 This is the only life I have. This is the only life hip has. You cannot be a life-giving 00:25:42.760 --> 00:25:49.640 spirit unless you have the life-giving spirit in you. And that's the only thing I have. I do not 00:25:49.640 --> 00:25:57.960 have anything else. Everything that you see in me that does not look like Christ is coming from a 00:25:57.960 --> 00:26:05.080 place of decay and flesh. Every time I think differently, it's the same. And God is willing 00:26:05.080 --> 00:26:10.440 in Ephesians 4.24. He says, hey, can I renew your thinking so that you can step into the 00:26:10.440 --> 00:26:18.440 holiness and the righteousness that is yours because I dwell in you? So, 00:26:34.200 --> 00:26:42.760 when Lenny's baby is born, Pawan's baby is born, there'll be a moment during that process when 00:26:43.480 --> 00:26:50.120 the baby will be in Pawan's arms or the doctor's arm, but it is still connected by its umbilical 00:26:50.440 --> 00:26:59.240 to the mother. And it's literally that where at once I'm walking the earth and yet I'm viscerally 00:26:59.240 --> 00:27:06.680 completely connected to him in the heavens. It's not one or the other. I'm not only on the earth 00:27:07.480 --> 00:27:13.080 or only in heaven. There is that moment in a baby's life, but there is that continuous moment 00:27:13.080 --> 00:27:18.280 in my life where on one hand I'm on the earth, on the other hand I'm also in heaven.
