WEBVTT NOTE Podcast: Acts 29 Vancouver Episode: Holy Spirit I Publishing Date: 2012-12-02T05:00:44-08:00 Podcast URL: https://acts29.ca Episode URL: https://acts29.ca/holy-spirit-i/ 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000 And the series is on the Holy Spirit. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:08.000 And some of us may think, but we come from Pentecostal backgrounds 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:14.000 and we know all about the Holy Spirit and I suggest to you that it's not true. 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:22.000 And some of us may think, but we come from a very solid background 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:26.000 in terms of teaching and theology and we are not those that get involved in this 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:32.000 experiencing of the Spirit and I'd say to you that that doesn't mean much either 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:37.000 because as I have been preparing these notes on the Holy Spirit, 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:45.000 I'm just surprised at things that I thought I knew that I need to hear again, hear clearly. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:52.000 And so I encourage us to pay attention and not assume that we know, not assume that we know. 00:00:52.000 --> 00:01:06.000 And having said that, understand also that on one hand you need to know solid stuff about the Spirit of God 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:11.000 but it cannot be at the cost of experiencing the Spirit. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:14.000 Let me put it in a different way. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:21.000 Most of us in Acts 39 have been so steeped in knowledge and revelation for the last few years 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:30.000 that what is good was a place for it, that we are beginning to lose out on experiencing an encounter with the Spirit of God. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.000 And I want to correct that. That's part of the reason why we are shifting focus now. 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:38.000 It's not that what we did was not the thing to do, it was the thing to do 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:45.000 because we had to earth what we believe because far too often things of the Spirit are very flaky 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:50.000 and so we worked it. But now we want to come back into experiencing the Spirit of God. 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:55.000 Experiencing, as in feeling, knowing, having encounters. 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.000 So part of the reason we are shifting is because of that. 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:05.000 And understand also that last week we said that we are engaging in something called Showtime. 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:08.000 That's what our theme is for 2013. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:13.000 And why are we calling it Showtime? Because we are saying that we want to show the nature of God, 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:22.000 we want to see and expect manifestations and we want to hear the voice. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:26.000 And in all these three aspects the Holy Spirit is involved. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:36.000 And therefore over the next two or three weeks we'll focus on a study of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 And I've deliberately titled the page Holy Spirit Who? 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 Because often it's Holy Spirit What? 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 And let's understand it the way we need to understand. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:51.000 And the thing that most Christians, even those sitting under this roof right now, 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:59.000 is that we grasp the Father and we grasp the Son, but we don't so much grasp the Holy Spirit. 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:12.000 Because often the Holy Spirit is represented by impersonal terms or non-personal terms such as oil, wind, water, fire. 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.000 That's how the Holy Spirit is represented. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:17.000 And they are non-personal terms. 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:22.000 So a fire fell and so we have fire conferences or oil and wine conferences. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.000 I haven't heard of that one. 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:27.000 But what I'm trying to say is these are non-personal terms or the dove. 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:32.000 So sometimes he's very non-personal and we want to change that. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:38.000 One of the prophets and regents was saying how he was sitting in his summer school class 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:43.000 and the teacher was trying to explain to the student what the Holy Spirit is like. 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.000 And he said the Holy Spirit is invisible. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.000 But then he held a paper in front of him and blew on it and said, 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:53.000 but you can see his activity and he blew on it. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.000 And he said the Holy Spirit is like a wind. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:57.000 He's invisible but you can see his activity. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:03:59.000 And the little boy in the summer school scared. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:01.000 But can't you make him un-invisible? 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 So that's what the kid said. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:04.000 And it's true. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:07.000 The Holy Spirit doesn't seem to be visible. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.000 The Father has been made visible through Christ. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:11.000 Jesus Christ walked the earth. 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:15.000 So when we read the Gospels, we see him as personal. 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:18.000 But the Holy Spirit seems invisible. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:23.000 And one of the things we'll try to do over the next three weeks is to make him un-invisible. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:29.000 And really when you think of it, just as Christ made the Father real 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.000 by representing him accurately, 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:36.000 so Christ has also put a face on the Holy Spirit. 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:39.000 Because some of us may not know this, 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:43.000 but the Spirit of God is also called the Spirit of Christ. 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:48.000 The Spirit of God is called the Spirit of Christ. 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:52.000 Jesus Christ has put a face on the Holy Spirit. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:53.000 We'll talk about that. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:56.000 But I just want you to know that we won't have to dig. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:59.000 It will be quite evident. 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:05.000 Just as the invisible Father has been made visible through Christ, 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:08.000 this is a statement you rarely hear in church, 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.000 the invisible Holy Spirit also has been made visible through Christ. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:17.000 Because in most circles we are taught that the Holy Spirit reveals Christ. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:21.000 I would like to suggest to you today that Christ reveals Christ. 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:24.000 Reveals the Holy Spirit too. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:28.000 That Christ puts a face on who the Holy Spirit is. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:31.000 And that's not sacrilegious to say that. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:34.000 That Christ reveals the Holy Spirit. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 It's actually that way. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 The Holy Spirit didn't fall on Mary, right? 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:39.000 Yeah. 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:41.000 Christ will fall on Mary. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.000 Christ is actually the face of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:46.000 No, Christ is not exactly. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:50.000 Because some of these equations, James, will have to be, 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:57.000 we'll examine, but not all have been fit exactly. 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:02.000 And yet at the end of the day you'll see that they're all connected. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.000 So we'll come to that. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:10.000 So don't hesitate to comment or ask, but I'm just saying it's a little different. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:12.000 Christ reveals the Father. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:15.000 Christ also reveals the nature of the Spirit. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:18.000 The Spirit reveals Christ. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:19.000 It is very connected. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:22.000 We'll talk about that. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.000 So in dealing with the Spirit, in dealing with the Holy Spirit, guys, 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:31.000 we are dealing with none other than the personal presence of God. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:34.000 In dealing with the Holy Spirit today, 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:39.000 we are dealing with none other than the personal presence of God Himself. 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:43.000 This V, R, Alpha and Omega. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:50.000 We are dealing with none other than the personal presence of Alpha and Omega 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:56.000 when you're dealing with the Holy Spirit. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:01.000 And now to go down the road that James just talked about in terms of how do they all relate. 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:04.000 Guys, the Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:07.000 say that the Holy Spirit is a divine influence 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:11.000 and they don't necessarily see Him as a distinct person. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:16.000 So when you are talking to a Jehovah's Witness, if you at one point ask them, 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.000 so what do you think of the Holy Spirit? 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:24.000 They will say He is a divine influence or a strong influence from God. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:29.000 But they will not say that He is an actual person. 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.000 They won't say that. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:34.000 Yeah, we'll be coming to that. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 They don't see Him as an actual person. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.000 They see Him as an influence. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:45.000 And in Christian circles, I suggest to you that again when it comes to the Holy Spirit, 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 things are very blurry. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:51.000 We don't exactly know how to look at Him. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:55.000 And so what sometimes happens is, because the Trinity is a mystery, 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:58.000 and when I say Trinity I mean Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000 because how do you figure it out? 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:01.000 You can't figure it out. 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:07.000 So what we normally do when we can't figure out how Father, Son and Holy Spirit can be one, 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:14.000 what we do is we reduce Him to something that fits well with our thinking. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:19.000 We reduce Him to a God whose signs our minds can grasp and control. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:22.000 And I suggest to you that's idolatry. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:23.000 Let me say that again. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:28.000 When we can't understand concepts in the Bible, and particularly the Triune God, 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:35.000 what we often do is we reduce God to a science that we can grasp and control. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:38.000 And that is a form of idolatry. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:44.000 I have to be careful not to reduce God to something I can comprehend 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.000 just because I cannot comprehend a certain thing. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:52.000 Nor can I do this other thing that we Christians do. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:57.000 Sometimes because I can't comprehend a certain aspect of God, I set it aside. 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:03.000 That is like setting aside an idol because we've got no one to grasp and control. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:06.000 Either way, neither is the correct approach. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:12.000 You cannot reduce Him to something that you can grasp and control because your mind can't handle it. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000 Nor can you set Him aside because your mind can't handle it. 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:19.000 Both are forms of idolatry. 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:26.000 So when I can't understand something in the Bible, I have to go back and say, 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.000 Father, can't grasp it with my mind. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:32.000 Help me begin to understand it in my spirit. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 Father, can't grasp it right now even in my spirit. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:37.000 But I won't set it aside. 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:38.000 I want to understand it more. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:44.000 So please come back to me, my beloved, who runs down the hills, over the mountains to come and speak. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:45.000 Show me, show me. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000 But I do not set it aside. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:53.000 So even today as we talk about the relationship between Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 00:09:54.000 --> 00:10:00.000 you'll find that for almost none of us will, I mean not almost, none of us will necessarily comprehend it. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:03.000 But certain lights may be looking. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:04.000 Go on. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:05.000 J.K. 00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:10.000 By setting aside, isn't that something you actually say, well I'm not interested? 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000 Yeah, when I say setting aside, it's like, ah, this is too complicated. 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:14.000 Let it be. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:19.000 But there's a point where you have to say, okay, I'm not going to worry about this right now. 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:22.000 Let's accept what I know and then go. 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:24.000 Yeah, it comes from a different place. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:31.000 When I'm interested in something like, like hockey, I mean I understand something. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:37.000 But there's still this, there's still this tomorrow morning I'll figure it out some more. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:41.000 It's not a setting aside as in, ah, too complicated. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:42.000 Let's go on to something else. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:46.000 Because what happens is then you have a sweater made up of loose ends. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:52.000 So you've got big holes and it's not moth eating, it's just lack of diligence. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 So here are some scriptures we need to look at. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:06.000 Guys, to begin with, when we think of the triune God, remember he's on one hand God in one God, 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:12.000 one God in three persons. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:17.000 And you know this, but I want to introduce something else too. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:23.000 One being in three persons. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:26.000 Both need to be understood. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:29.000 It's not sufficient to understand one. 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:35.000 So it's one God in three persons as in God is one. 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:38.000 Father, Spirit and Son. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:46.000 And yet, he's also one being in three persons, meaning there's such unity in the Godhead 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.000 that what the Father thinks is what the Holy Spirit thinks is what the Son thinks. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:55.000 What the Father does is what the Holy Spirit does is what Jesus does. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:12:02.000 It's both one God in three distinct persons and it is one being in three persons. 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:06.000 This is important that you have both steps. 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:15.000 Let's look at some scriptures. 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:16.000 One God in three persons. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:18.000 1 Corinthians 12, 4 to 6. 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:22.000 1 Corinthians 12, 4 to 6. 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:27.000 Guys, if you don't have a Bible, grab a Bible because there's a lot of scriptures we'll be looking at. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:31.000 If nothing else, you can mark it and go home and look at it again. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:33.000 1 Corinthians 12, 4 to 6. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:41.000 Okay, here it goes. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:46.000 Look at all three persons of the Godhead being mentioned in 4 to 6. 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:50.000 There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:55.000 There are different kinds of services but the same Lord as in Jesus. 00:12:55.000 --> 00:13:02.000 There are different kinds of workings but the same God as in the Father works all of them in all men. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Let's look at another one. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:16.000 2 Corinthians 13, 14. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.000 2 Corinthians 13, 14. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:26.000 Okay, a very simple one. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:30.000 And there is a benediction that is so often read. 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:33.000 2 Corinthians 13, 14. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:40.000 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the... 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.000 You know the word fellowship should be replaced by the word participation. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.000 That's more...fellowship seems to be... 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:50.000 When you think of fellowship, it's like what happened at Anne's place yesterday. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:55.000 It's a little moving that there is participation in. 00:13:55.000 --> 00:14:03.000 So, may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the participation of the Holy Spirit be which you... 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:07.000 or the participation in the Holy Spirit be which you are. 00:14:07.000 --> 00:14:09.000 So, those are two scriptures. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:15.000 There I can give you another 14 or 15 where we talk about God in three persons. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.000 But look at this. 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:23.000 Even though God is in three persons and one being in three persons... 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:25.000 Look at this. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:35.000 The Holy Spirit is separate from Christ. 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:37.000 This is one part of it. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:39.000 The Holy Spirit is separate from Christ. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:45.000 Look at Romans 8, Romans 8, 26 and 27. 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:50.000 Romans 8, 26 and 27. 00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:57.000 So, in Romans 8, 26 and 27, here's what it says. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:02.000 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:05.000 We did not know what we ought to pray. 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:13.000 But the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:17.000 So, on one hand, Romans 8, 26 says that. 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:19.000 Now look at Romans 8, 34. 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:25.000 And you'll see Jesus Christ doing the same thing but is very clearly mentioned in a separate... 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:28.000 Romans 8, verse 34. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:38.000 Who is he that condemns Christ Jesus who died more than that who was raised to life is in the right hand of God and is also interceding for us? 00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:46.000 So, on one hand, in Romans 8, 26 and 27, you've got the Spirit of God who invulg in us, interceding for us. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:53.000 But on the other hand, in the heavens, you've got Jesus Christ who intercedes for us in the heavenlies. 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:57.000 Yet, having said that, now look at this other scripture. 00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:01.000 Look at Romans 8, 9. 00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:10.000 Romans 8, 9. 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:19.000 Ready? 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:20.000 Okay, here it goes. 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:25.000 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 If the Spirit of God lives in you. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:33.000 And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:39.000 Suddenly, in this scripture, you see that the Spirit of God is the same as the Spirit of Christ. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.000 So, on one hand, the Spirit of God is different from Jesus Christ. 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:49.000 Meaning, Jesus Christ is the second person of the triune Godhead. 00:16:49.000 --> 00:16:51.000 The Holy Spirit is the third person of the triune Godhead. 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:58.000 Yet, the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit is the same as the Spirit of Christ. 00:16:58.000 --> 00:17:03.000 It's this whole thing of one God in three persons, one being in three persons. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:08.000 I know it's a little hard to comprehend but it's the way it works. 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:14.000 Look at Galatians 4, 6. 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:22.000 Okay. 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:31.000 Galatians 4, 6 says, Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. 00:17:31.000 --> 00:17:32.000 Right? 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:35.000 Now look at Galatians 3, 5. 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:40.000 Galatians 3, 5. 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:43.000 Galatians 3, 5. 00:17:43.000 --> 00:17:46.000 Galatians 3, 5. 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:55.000 It says that, Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:57.000 the law or because you believe what you heard? 00:17:57.000 --> 00:18:03.000 So, in Galatians 3, 5, it says, Does God, meaning God the Father, give you his Spirit? 00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:11.000 But in Galatians 4, 6 it says, But he has received the Spirit of his Son. 00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:17.000 God in three persons, one being in three persons. 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:21.000 It's hard to comprehend but it all comes together. 00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:23.000 What translation are you using? 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:25.000 An ID. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:29.000 Any questions? 00:18:29.000 --> 00:18:33.000 I'm going to be able to answer some of them but any questions or any comments? 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:41.000 I want to try to describe the fresh baked cherry pie in three pieces. 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:46.000 Because the filling still all runs together but it's still three pieces of pie. 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:47.000 Yeah. 00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:48.000 Did you hear that? 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:49.000 You heard that? 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:52.000 It's the Holy Spirit. 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:57.000 These analogies can only go so far because they just don't cut it. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:19:05.000 But it's like a pie that's cut in three pieces and the filling is the same in all three pieces. 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.000 They're only kind of convinced for the advantage. 00:19:09.000 --> 00:19:16.000 You know how it works with ice, water and steam and the light heat and energy. 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:17.000 All those things. 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:18.000 The egg and the yolk. 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:19.000 Egg and the yolk. 00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:21.000 I mean these things can only take you thus far. 00:19:21.000 --> 00:19:23.000 It is
