You can go and listen to it later. 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:20.000 So now we want to flesh it out because when we talk about changes God wants to bring, 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:27.000 some of us can wonder what it might mean and how it might look. So we'll start fleshing it out. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:40.000 So if you go to Genesis 26, 22, this is something that will happen with the new commission that we spoke about last week. 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:47.000 We said that God had built a prototype, has brought Acts 29 to a place where God is saying, 00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:54.000 great job done well, I've done what I need to, have a last look at your family photo, from here on we will look different. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:00.000 So we want to check out what this look different means. And so we're trying to flesh it out. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:06.000 If you haven't heard what we talked last week, go listen to it because it will give you a point of reference. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:16.000 When you look at Genesis 26, 22, it says, Isaac moved on from there and dug another well and no one quarreled over it. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:22.000 He named it Rehoboth saying, now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in this land. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:31.000 So to flesh out what God means when he says, all right, now see what change looks like, 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:48.000 I'd suggest to you that one of the things that God will do is in Vancouver, he'll give us room in this land and we will flourish in it. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:53.000 Meaning it won't be just a, okay, you've got space here, we'll flourish in it. 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:57.000 We'll flourish in it. 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:04.000 So that kind of gives us an inkling of what it'll look like. 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:10.000 Because in Vancouver we haven't had much room, we're a super small church, nobody knows us, haven't done much in Vancouver, 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:13.000 may have done tremendous amounts of work in different parts of the world. 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:20.000 But God is saying, hey, one of the changes that will happen is I'll give you guys room in this land. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:29.000 And so in Genesis 26, 22, Isaac moved from there and dug another well and no one quarreled over it. 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:35.000 He named it Rehoboth saying, now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in this land. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:38.000 So that is one of the things I'm expecting. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:42.000 I was asking God, hey Father, will you back this up when I teach it? 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:47.000 And his response was, but I'm the one who came up with the teaching, so why won't I back it up? 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:52.000 So he said, it's a redundant prayer. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:57.000 If I'm the one who's brought this teaching up and I want you to teach it and I want the people to hear it, 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 why are you praying that I back it up? 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:01.000 I will back it up, otherwise I wouldn't say it. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:05.000 So I'm trusting that without much effort these things will begin to happen. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 So how will he work this out? 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 How will he work this out? 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:13.000 How will he work this, giving us room in this land and causing us to flourish? 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:15.000 How will he work it out? 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:18.000 And this was what kind of took me by surprise. 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:33.000 He'll work it out through an unprecedented display of his mercy, 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:37.000 which is not the answer that I was expecting. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:41.000 He'll work it out through an unprecedented display, 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:45.000 meaning unprecedented basically means like never before in Vancouver. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:50.000 I know men, sometimes when you say these things, you scratch your head thinking, really? 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.000 Us? Yeah, but what can you do if God is like that? 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:59.000 So he will work this out in this land through an unprecedented display of mercy, 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.000 so that room is created for us in this land. 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:07.000 Guys, when it comes to mercy, you must realize, and we don't realize this very often, 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:12.000 because some of us have been Christians for so long that we feel entitled. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:16.000 We feel salvation entitled. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.000 But really, when you think of it, you and I deserve nothing. 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:21.000 Listen to this, eh? 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:28.000 You deserve nothing but trouble, torment, sickness, death and hell. 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:32.000 You deserve nothing else. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 Because we've been Christians for very long, 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:37.000 when God doesn't show up a little, we get very upset with him. 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000 It's like, you're not doing your job. 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:42.000 Like, where were you? What about your promises? 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:45.000 How come you didn't turn up? What a failure you're turning out to be. 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:46.000 Untrustable. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:50.000 These are the responses from seasoned Christians or Christians who've been born again for a while, 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.000 because it's like, show up, you've got to keep your promise. 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:58.000 But what we don't realize is that you really deserve nothing. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.000 This is what you deserve. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:10.000 You deserve torment, you deserve no protection, you deserve sickness, you deserve hell, and you deserve death. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:19.000 Unless we think of that, we will not grasp mercy. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:23.000 Trouble, torment, sickness, death and hell is actually what you and I deserve, 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:29.000 just based on the sinful lives we've led right from when we were children, 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:32.000 right from when we had the ability to judge right and wrong, 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:35.000 just based on the sinful lives we've led. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.000 And to understand mercy, you have to understand that he's ridiculously holy, so holy, 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:43.000 that even though he's not surrounded by gases that are bursting into flames, 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:48.000 he's so holy that the Bible says he lives in unapproachable light. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:50.000 So it's a purity that you and I cannot imagine. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.000 It is unapproachable. You can't approach the light that he is, 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:57.000 and his light is not because he's surrounded himself with light, 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:01.000 he's light because it's blazingly pure. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:04.000 So you've got to think of his holiness, and then you've got to think of sin, 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.000 and you've got to realize that sin must be paid for, 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:10.000 and it's usually paid for with trouble, torment, sickness, death and hell. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:15.000 And you do not deserve anything else. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:22.000 When was the last time you thought like that? We don't. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:28.000 And instead of that now, he lavishes us with unceasing mercy. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:32.000 Instead of that, he lavishes us with unceasing mercy. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:41.000 And in that mercy now you get words like... 00:06:41.000 --> 00:07:02.000 In that mercy you get words like forgiveness, joy, protection, comfort, life, healing. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:07.000 We need to enjoy this. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:15.000 Life, healing, and perhaps my favorite thing, presence. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.000 This is what mercy looks like. 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:27.000 So instead of trouble, torment, sickness, death, hell, which I actually deserve, 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:45.000 Instead of that, he lavishes me, he lavishes me with forgiveness, joy, protection, comfort, life, healing, but most of all, presence. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:51.000 You know, it's odd. We start with the other things first as things that must be obtained. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:58.000 You would be surprised how if you started with presence, the other things would come naturally. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:08.000 As believers, we go hunting after, in my trouble, comfort me, in my sin, forgive me, in my decay, give me life, in my insecurity, give me protection, 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:11.000 in my sorrow, give me joy, in my sickness, give me healing. 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 And when it doesn't turn up, we do get upset. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:21.000 But the thing is, what if you went for the one biggest thing that comes with mercy, which is presence? 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:29.000 With presence comes everything else. It's the trick, man. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:38.000 But please understand that if I don't see what I should deserve, I will not value mercy. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:42.000 If I don't see what I should deserve, I will not value mercy. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:47.000 By the way, mercy was not this remote act. Gosh, man. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:56.000 Mercy was not a remote act of forgiveness. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:59.000 Mercy was not a remote act of forgiveness. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:26.000 Mercy was God forging a relationship of loyal, kind love that he would sustain even when I was in trouble. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:31.000 Resist it. 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:43.000 Mercy is not some remote forgiveness that he offers. 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:52.000 Mercy is God forging a relationship that is loyal, that is loving, that is kind, that is loyal, that is loving, that is kind, 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:59.000 that is consistent, that is continuous, that he sustains even when I resist it. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:02.000 Hey, look at yourself right now and look at me right now. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:06.000 You've got sin in your life and I've got sin in my life. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 It is a sin that deserves judgment. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:14.000 He's already paid the price, but despite him paying the price, we still sin. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:16.000 It is sin that deserves judgment. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:30.000 Instead, he's forged a relationship which is loving, which is kind, which is loyal, and he sustains it out of sheer mercy, 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.000 has said, favor, kindness. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:37.000 He sustains it even if you and I resist it. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:42.000 And he does it consistently, continuously, loyally, without budging. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:46.000 And it is present upon your head right now. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:52.000 It was new this morning, Lamentations 3, 22-24. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.000 His mercies are new every morning. 00:10:55.000 --> 00:11:02.000 The mercy, we don't realize that we don't have a halo, we have mercy upon our heads. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:11.000 It displaces torment, sickness, death, hell, trouble, and it replaces it with presence, joy, forgiveness, compassion, 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:16.000 life, healing. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.000 What bothers me about this whole thing is this next line. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.000 The one who showed mercy had to die for me to receive it. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:31.000 That is what bothers me, that the one who shows mercy had to die for me to receive it. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:39.000 The one who shows mercy, the one who has chosen to show mercy is the one who has to die for me to receive it. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:41.000 Which then brings in another aspect. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:46.000 If he died so that I can have it, then I do have it, and I must appropriate it by faith. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:52.000 And if my faith ain't where it is, then I will rise up tomorrow and begin to work on it. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:58.000 But I will not settle for, ah, perhaps he's not delivering it. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.000 Ah, perhaps he has a reason for holding it back. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.000 This is someone who did not hold back his life, and therefore in Romans 8 it says, 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:10.000 If he who did not hold himself back from giving his life, why will he hold anything else back? 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:18.000 The one who shows mercy had to die for me to receive it. 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:23.000 And if there was one person in the universe who did not deserve to die, it was him. 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:27.000 One should be tremblingly happy as one listens to this. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:31.000 Tremblingly happy. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.000 Go sit on the keys. 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.000 Yeah, that's fine. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:41.000 1 Peter 3, 18. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:42.000 Can someone give me a Bible? 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 I don't think I brought mine. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:47.000 It's terrible to say that as a pastor. 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:53.000 1 Peter 3, 18. 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:55.000 1 Peter 3, 18. 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:56.000 Can someone give me a Bible? 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:58.000 I don't think I brought mine. 00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:04.000 It's terrible to say that as a pastor. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:13.000 1 Peter 3, 18. 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:20.000 1 Peter 3, 18. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:26.000 For Christ died for sins once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous to bring you to God. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:31.000 He was put to death in the body and made alive by the Spirit through him who... 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:32.000 Okay, that's... I get you and I thank you for your mercy. 00:18:43.000 --> 00:18:45.000 I thank you for your mercy over my head. 00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:48.000 I thank you for the mercy that you have over each head here. 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:53.000 It's loyal, it's loving, it's kind, it's merciful. 00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:56.000 We kiss your feet, Jesus. 00:18:56.000 --> 00:18:58.000 We kiss your feet 00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:01.000 Like that woman with the alabaster flask 00:19:01.000 --> 00:19:05.000 We kiss your feet, we worship you, we adore you, oh merciful God. 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:08.000 You've always been like this. 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:10.000 You said it to Moses in Exodus 33 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:13.000 I'm gracious and compassionate and full of mercy. 00:19:13.000 --> 00:19:15.000 You've always been like this, oh merciful God. 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:18.000 We open our mouths and we worship you, oh God. 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:22.000 We worship you, Jesus. We recognize your mercy. 00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:27.000 We recognize your mercy and most of all we thank you for your presence that comes with your mercy. 00:19:27.000 --> 00:19:30.000 Presence that comes with your mercy. 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.000 We receive it, oh God. 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:34.000 We receive it. 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:37.000 We bless you, oh God. 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:41.000 We bless you, Father. 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:44.000 You see that, guys? 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:49.000 Guys, mercy always implies forgiveness for the guilt that we may carry. 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:54.000 So mercy always implies forgiveness for the guilty and compassion for the helpless. 00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:56.000 So it's got these two aspects. 00:19:56.000 --> 00:20:01.000 It's forgiveness for the guilty 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:04.000 for the guilty 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:07.000 and compassion for the helpless or desperate. 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:10.000 Compassion for the helpless 00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:13.000 or the desperate. 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:16.000 These are two aspects of mercy that will always be there. 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:19.000 Remember, God is saying he'll give us room in this land 00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:22.000 through an unprecedented display of mercy. 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:26.000 And so that's why we're trying to figure out what does this look like, oh God. 00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:32.000 And one of the things that God wants to do through us is pour out this idea of forgiveness that takes away guilt 00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:36.000 and come out of it. 00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:42.000 Forgiveness that takes away guilt and compassion for the helpless. 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:47.000 Forgiveness that takes away guilt and compassion for the helpless. 00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:50.000 And I was just saying, this is not a new thing with God. 00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:55.000 If you go to Exodus 33.19, Exodus 33.19, 00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:57.000 he's always been like this. 00:20:57.000 --> 00:21:04.000 He didn't change after Malachi 4.6, Exodus 33.19, Exodus 33.19. 00:21:04.000 --> 00:21:09.000 And it says, and the Lord, and the beautiful thing is 00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:13.000 Moses is asking that he see God's glory and God says, I'll show you my goodness. 00:21:13.000 --> 00:21:17.000 And then it's almost as if God is defining what his goodness looks like. 00:21:17.000 --> 00:21:26.000 Exodus 33, and he says, let's start at verse 17. 00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:29.000 And the Lord said to Moses, I'll do the very thing you have asked 00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:32.000 because I am pleased with you and I know you by name. 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:34.000 Then Moses said, now show me your glory. 00:21:34.000 --> 00:21:38.000 And the Lord said, I'll cause all my goodness to pass in front of you 00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:41.000 and I'll proclaim my name, the Lord in your presence. 00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:44.000 I will have mercy on who? The same cry that David had in Psalm 6 2 where he 00:37:33.520 --> 00:37:39.480 says, O God, be merciful and heal me, the same cry is taken up in the New Testament 00:37:39.480 --> 00:37:44.800 and with astounding results. Say, you look at Matthew chapter 15, Matthew chapter 15 00:37:44.800 --> 00:37:49.260 and there is a Syrophoenician woman who has a daughter who is demonized and look 00:37:49.260 --> 00:37:55.480 at her cry, Son of David, have mercy on me and he stops and he has this dialogue 00:37:55.480 --> 00:38:01.800 with her and he says at this very hour your daughter will be healed. Matthew 15, 00:38:01.800 --> 00:38:09.040 he walks down a little more and now he's in Matthew 17 and in Matthew 17 there is 00:38:09.040 --> 00:38:15.800 an epileptic boy and his father is crying out to Jesus saying, Son of David, your 00:38:15.800 --> 00:38:20.640 disciples were not able to cast this demon out. You go on to the epistles and you see Paul 00:39:52.360 --> 00:39:56.760 and Paul is now talking about a guy called Epiphrotetus who was close to 00:39:56.760 --> 00:40:00.400 death and he writes saying, Epiphrotetus in Philippians, he's writing to the 00:40:00.400 --> 00:40:05.400 Philippi Church, he was close to death and God in his mercy healed him. This 00:40:05.400 --> 00:40:10.720 idea of mercy and healing is very very old but we've been so stuck with faith 00:40:10.720 --> 00:40:15.360 that sometimes it becomes difficult.
