WEBVTT NOTE Podcast: Acts 29 Vancouver Episode: Good-News-Culture-Exchange Publishing Date: 2022-09-04T06:00:44-07:00 Podcast URL: https://acts29.ca Episode URL: https://acts29.ca/good-news-culture-exchange/ 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 Thank you guys, thank you. 00:00:06.620 --> 00:00:11.620 Okay, so we'll talk about this idea of exchange, 00:00:12.820 --> 00:00:16.460 and so we sum up what we spoke about last week. 00:00:16.460 --> 00:00:19.420 I don't know if you had an opportunity to practice it, 00:00:19.420 --> 00:00:21.300 but let's go over what we said last week. 00:00:21.300 --> 00:00:26.300 So we understand this idea of exchange. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.000 It means that God is calling us to bring to pass here on earth. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.000 So we said last week that in Acts 3, verse 6, 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.000 so this is a continuation from last week, Acts 3, verse 6, 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.000 we said that we have nothing else to give. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:48.000 We have nothing else to give. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:52.000 We have nothing else to give. 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:57.000 We have nothing else to give but the Son. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:00.000 We have nothing else to give but the Son. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.000 Nothing of value to give but the Son. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:03.000 Acts 3 says, 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:05.000 Silver and gold have I none, 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.000 but what I have I give you in the name of Jesus Christ. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:14.000 So the only thing that you and I have for the rest of the earth is the Son. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000 We have nothing else to give but the Son. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:19.000 Because the world has everything else they can give them. 00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:23.000 The world can give them more money, more jobs, more health, more projects, 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:27.000 more sometimes accolades, 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:33.000 but we have something that they need and we have nothing else to give but the Son. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:39.000 But you can't give away what is precious to you, 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:43.000 you can't give away what is precious to you, 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:47.000 what is precious to you, 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:52.000 till you love someone. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:55.000 That's the second statement we made last time, 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000 that Jesus is super precious to us. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.000 It's very evident in this church, 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000 especially sometimes when the ways you act and the ways you worship, 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:05.000 the way you talk, 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:08.000 it's very evident that Jesus is really precious to you. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.000 But you can never give away something super precious to you 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000 unless you love somebody. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000 That's when you give things away. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:18.000 How do we know that? 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:20.000 Because God himself did that. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 God so loved that he gave. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.000 So one of the reasons we have Jesus in our lives, 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:33.000 but we don't give him away, 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:36.000 is because we lack the second thing that God has, 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 which is he loves so much that he gives away. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:41.000 I do not love enough, I do not give away. 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:43.000 So I have to ask, and I've been asking, 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:47.000 Father, today can you help me to love the world? 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:48.000 It's our day. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 On one hand it says Christians do not love the world. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000 On the other hand we are praying, 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 Jesus, please help me love the world. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.000 Because I only give away something really precious 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 when I love something else more. 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:02.000 We do that with our kids, we do that with our spouses. 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:05.000 God so loved that he gave. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 That leads us to a third dilemma, 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:12.000 which is because he lives in me, 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:15.000 because he lives in me, 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:21.000 I can only give him away, 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:22.000 I can only give him away 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:33.000 by giving myself away sacrificially. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.000 By giving myself away sacrificially. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000 That's a catch, eh? 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:46.000 God has set it up that way. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.000 So you want to give me away? 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 Well, you can't give me away in a tract, 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.000 you can't give me away in a video, 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.000 you can't give me away in an invitation to a church. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:57.000 If you want to give me away, 00:03:57.000 --> 00:03:59.000 since I live in you and you love, 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.000 you'll have to give me away by giving yourself away sacrificially. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:05.000 So he's set this up in such a way 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:08.000 that it gives us very little wiggle room. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:12.000 And all love is expressed in sacrifice, 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:14.000 be it with your spouse, be it with your friends, 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.000 be it with your children. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:18.000 It's best expressed in sacrifice. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 Sacrifice of four things, 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:24.000 there might be more, but it's the four T's. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.000 Time, treasure, talent. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:31.000 Three T's and one S. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:33.000 Strength. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.000 Time, talent, treasure, strength. 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:44.000 So you give him, and how does the sacrificial giving start? 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:48.000 First you give yourself to him, 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.000 then you give yourself to others. 00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:01.000 That's how he, that's how he, 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:09.000 that's how he, that's how he can represent himself through us. 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:16.000 That's how he can represent himself through us. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 Any questions thus far? 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:22.000 So basically what we are saying is, 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:26.000 hey guys, build a church for the world. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:29.000 Build a church for the world 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:31.000 and give the sun away. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:38.000 But to give the sun away, you'll have to love the world. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:41.000 And to give the sun away, you'll have to give yourself away. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:47.000 And so this must be this constant prayer that comes out of us. 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:52.000 Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane is kind of this. 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:56.000 I know that I don't have to do this, but I realize I need to do this. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 For this reason I came. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.000 That's his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:03.000 That's what he's struggling with. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:05.000 So don't think that you won't struggle with it. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.000 This is a struggle. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.000 It is a struggle. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:11.000 He struggled with it. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.000 He struggled with it in his humanity, but he was very sure. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.000 And then he says, not my will, but my will. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:21.000 So this is a struggle. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 So this is not just tomorrow start doing it. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:26.000 Struggle with it. Struggle through it. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:27.000 Pray it out. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 Pray that I love the world more. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 It is not possible to give anything away 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.000 till you love something so much that you're willing to sacrifice it. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.000 Any questions, guys? 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:45.000 So much is rotten with prayer, right? 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:49.000 So much is rotten with prayer, right? 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:51.000 When you begin to pray, God puts you on an anvil 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:55.000 and begins to shape you and then provide you an opportunity to fit. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:56.000 Hear me again. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:59.000 When you begin to pray this, God puts you on an anvil 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:01.000 and he shapes you so that, 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 he's shaping you so that tomorrow 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:06.000 he will provide you an opportunity where you will fit. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000 So some of these things need prayer 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.000 so that something changes here and here. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 Trust the Holy Spirit to do that 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.000 because there's no way around it because we are so self-preserving. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.000 Self-preservation is a direct opposite of sacrifice. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.000 Build a church for the world and give the sun away. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 Any questions? 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:41.000 God works through representation. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.000 He works through representation. 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:45.000 Why does he work through representation? 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 One, because he's transcendent. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:49.000 He's outside time and space 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:52.000 so he puts people on the earth to work and represent him. 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.000 He did this in the Garden of Eden. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:56.000 He said, I will make man in my image. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 You will represent me. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000 And I trust you so much, Adam, 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.000 that you will multiply after my kind, not after your kind. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:08.000 Till Adam sinned, people were supposed to be born after his kind. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:12.000 So this idea of representation is very ancient. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:15.000 He always works through representation. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.000 This is why he comes and lives in you. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 So you don't even have to imitate. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 You cannot give him away without giving yourself away. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.000 And so one of the reasons he loves representation 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:31.000 is because he's transcendent 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:33.000 and he's utterly transcendent. 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:35.000 And so the way he enters the earth, 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.000 just think of this. 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:39.000 How did he enter the earth 2,000 years ago? 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:41.000 Again, through representation. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.000 Through someone, a man called Jesus of Nazareth. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000 Now how does he enter the earth? 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:50.000 Through another man called the Church, the body of Christ. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.000 So he's utterly transcendent, 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:58.000 so he wants us to represent him. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:00.000 Second, we are his likeness. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:05.000 He's got no problems, like Jane was saying, 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:07.000 he's got no problems trusting us 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.000 because we are his likeness. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:13.000 Three, he trusts us 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:21.000 because he trusts the Christ in us, his son. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:31.000 And four, he is, after all, Emmanuel, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 God with us. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.000 The with us God. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.000 What are we saying? 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:43.000 That the only God, there's only one, 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:46.000 that the living God, all other gods are dead, 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:50.000 and the holy God, because every other God is unholy, 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:53.000 the only God, the living God, the holy God, 00:09:53.000 --> 00:10:01.000 thinks that you are best to represent him. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:04.000 He's chosen your workplace, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 he's chosen the country you were born in, 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:10.000 he's chosen the nation you presently live in, 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:15.000 he's chosen everything because he actually thinks well of you 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:17.000 and thinks that you are best to represent him. 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:20.000 To whom? To your child. 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:25.000 To your cynical neighbor. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:30.000 To your colleague. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:33.000 To the communist. 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:37.000 To the republican. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:40.000 To the Buddhist. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.000 To the Islamist. 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.000 To the atheist. 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:53.000 Why does he think they need to be approached? 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:55.000 Because he loves them 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:58.000 and because they belong to him 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:03.000 and because they don't know it. 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:06.000 That's why. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:14.000 But Jacob, we know all this. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:18.000 True, but we don't go over it again and again and again. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:22.000 So even though we know all this, we have to think. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:24.000 It's so important to think like this. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:25.000 These are not our daily thoughts. 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 Our daily thoughts are usually about us. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:30.000 Nothing wrong with that. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.000 Nothing wrong with that. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:35.000 Nothing wrong with that in the sense, 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:38.000 love the Lord your God, it's important. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 Love your neighbor as you love yourself. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:42.000 So it is important to take care of yourself. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:46.000 But after taking care of yourself comes this idea of self-denial. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.000 Self-denial is not denying yourself before you take care of yourself. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:52.000 Self-denial is taking care of yourself and then saying, 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:56.000 just as I desire friendship, I desire friendship for him. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:58.000 Just as I have security in Jesus, 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:01.000 I desire the same security in Jesus for him. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:03.000 Just as I hear the voice of God, 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:07.000 I desire that he would hear the voice of the only living true holy God. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:09.000 Just as I have eternal security, 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:12.000 in the same manner I desire eternal security for him. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.000 Just as I was approached by someone who found me obnoxious 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:18.000 and yet began to speak Jesus into my life, 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:21.000 in the same way I desire now to speak into their lives, 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:24.000 even though they may reject or be obnoxious to me. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:28.000 Love your neighbor as you love yourself, not instead of yourself. 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:30.000 The idea of self-denial is, 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:32.000 now that I know that this is what I'm worth, 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.000 I would like to deny my dignity, my worth, my reputation, 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:38.000 and confer it on somebody else. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:39.000 We have to think like this. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000 Our problem is we don't necessarily think like this, 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:47.000 and therefore Christianity has its own versions of existence. 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:52.000 So pray this, think like this, pray this, think like this, pray this, think like this. 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:54.000 It's important guys, 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:59.000 till it becomes naturally, it becomes natural, till it becomes natural. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Any questions? 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:12.000 Okay. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:19.000 Then we said last week that 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.000 the name of Jesus Christ 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:28.000 and I've been practicing this week and it's been a lot of fun. 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:32.000 My prayers are getting longer, but that's the only downside. 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:37.000 The name of Jesus Christ, so when someone says in the name of Jesus Christ, 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:42.000 in the name of Jesus Christ, we are saying that the nature of God is in His name. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:45.000 The nature of God is in His name. 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:48.000 The nature of God is in His name. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.000 The will of God, you see that in Hebrews 1, 3, 00:13:53.000 --> 00:13:59.000 the will of God is in that name. 00:13:59.000 --> 00:14:04.000 As in every promise of God is yes and amen in Jesus Christ. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:06.000 1 Corinthians 1, 20. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:08.000 The will of God is in His name. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:11.000 The power of God is in His name. 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.000 The power of God is in His name. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.000 The power of God is in His name. 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.000 And you see that in Acts 3, 16. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:29.000 And rescue or salvation is in that name. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:33.000 You see that in Acts 4, verse 12. 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:38.000 Rescue or salvation is in that name. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:45.000 So this week the reason my prayers got longer is when I pray for people, 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:51.000 I say now in the name of Jesus Christ, whose nature it is to do this for you, 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:54.000 because His name is His nature, in the name of Jesus Christ, 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:59.000 whose will it is to heal you, because we know the promise of God in it. 00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:05.000 In the name of Jesus Christ, in whose name is all power, Acts chapter 3, 16. 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.000 It's not anything else but the sheer power in the name of Jesus Christ that has wrought the ceiling. 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:14.000 In the name of Jesus Christ who rescues or who saves, there is no other name. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:17.000 In that name, and as you begin to speak it, 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:20.000 you begin to gain confidence of the name that you're using. 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:25.000 It's not a mantra anymore, or as one would say mantra anymore. 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:33.000 And so you begin to build yourself, leave alone, build a person who's hearing it. 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:38.000 Because it's not an incantation or you're not invoking a name like the pagans do. 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:41.000 You understand why you're using this name. 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:45.000 In the name of Jesus Christ, I know. 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:48.000 That's the other thing we talked about last week. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:51.000 Any questions? 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:57.000 As Paul would say, it is good that we go over this again. 00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:02.000 Third thing we spoke about last week is 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:11.000 that healing was sometimes because of Peter's faith or your faith, depending on who's praying. 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:21.000 Healing was sometimes because of Peter's faith, or you put your name there, your faith. 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:27.000 Sometimes the person you're praying for does not have any faith, but you have the faith for them. 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:29.000 Use it. 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:36.000 Peter went past that man many times before, but that day he stops and he says, 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.000 silver and gold I have none, but what I have I'll give you. 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.000 Because he's asking for them arms. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:43.000 He's been asking for arms for years before that. 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:45.000 He wasn't a new guy. 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:48.000 Spots near the temple were highly priced. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.000 You had to come early and sit there so you get what you need. 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:59.000 Peter had gone past him, but that day Peter had inside him the faith required to heal that man. 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:03.000 We can get to a place where we are aware of what God wants on certain days. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:08.000 You go past the person and every other day you're walking past. 00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:12.000 And then one day God says, now. 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:17.000 And that day you have such, sometimes I would even say it's a gift of faith. 00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:19.000 I'm not saying the Bible says so. 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:24.000 I'm saying that sometimes it's a gift of faith where one day you know that inside you 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:29.000 there's a sudden surge of faith brought in by the Holy Spirit saying, heal him. 00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:34.000 So there's that that happens. 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:36.000 We talked about that. 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:44.000 Healing is sometimes by your faith through Jesus. 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:47.000 As in Jesus gives it to you saying, go ahead. 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:50.000 I know you walked past this man many times, but today go ahead. 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:52.000 Be aware of it.
