Fill to boldness. Okay, so guys, the 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:29.560 character of the first century church, one of the distinctives of the first century church 00:00:29.560 --> 00:00:42.840 was unparalleled boldness. They were ridiculously bold. So many things that we have today they 00:00:42.840 --> 00:00:50.120 had but the one thing we don't have is the ridiculous boldness that they seemed to have 00:00:50.120 --> 00:00:57.140 gotten hold of. And yet, just about three months before they began to behave the way 00:00:57.220 --> 00:01:05.780 they behaved, both in Gethsemane and at Golgotha you see a different scene. In Gethsemane, 00:01:05.780 --> 00:01:13.940 almost all of them fled and at Golgotha there was John and Mary. Those were the only guys who 00:01:13.940 --> 00:01:21.860 remained. The rest of them fled. And so if anything describes the difference between us 00:01:22.820 --> 00:01:31.300 and the first century church, it is, I don't want to use this word on us but it can't be avoided, 00:01:31.300 --> 00:01:38.900 it is our cowardliness or lack of boldness. 00:01:42.580 --> 00:01:50.340 It's a trait of the present day church. It's our cowardliness or the lack of boldness. Strangely 00:01:50.340 --> 00:01:58.420 enough guys, if you look at Revelations 21 verse 8, it's a list of people that are 00:02:00.500 --> 00:02:07.780 put in the lake of fire and murderers, adulterers and so on. This is at the end of time where people 00:02:07.780 --> 00:02:17.940 are being, I mean, literally assigned to the lake of fire. But the list begins with this one group 00:02:17.940 --> 00:02:26.180 of people called cowards. The cowardly or the feckless or the faithless, those are three different 00:02:26.180 --> 00:02:32.820 words used, the cowardly, the feckless, the faithless are in that group. In fact the list starts with 00:02:32.820 --> 00:02:39.620 cowards and I want to say that it's not just a trait that's present all across the earth when it 00:02:39.620 --> 00:02:45.780 comes to churches but it's something that we struggle with too. And so I want to see how we can 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:55.220 change that. And with the life of the disciples, the two pivotal events that swung them around or 00:02:55.220 --> 00:03:04.900 that two pivotal events that transformed them, two pivotal events that transformed them was resurrection 00:03:07.380 --> 00:03:08.340 and Pentecost. 00:03:08.660 --> 00:03:17.460 Resurrection and Pentecost. And I would say to you that was effective then and it's also effective now 00:03:17.460 --> 00:03:26.980 because we have the same advantages. You may not have seen the risen Christ in person but it's just 00:03:26.980 --> 00:03:32.180 false to assume that had you seen Christ in person that you would have believed. 00:03:32.500 --> 00:03:38.900 Because in the scriptures it says that they saw the risen Christ and yet some of them doubted. 00:03:38.900 --> 00:03:47.940 That's what it says. Thomas had to put his fingers in the nail scarred hands of Jesus before he would 00:03:47.940 --> 00:03:53.460 believe. So we just assume that had we been there it would have been different and it's not true. 00:03:54.180 --> 00:03:57.940 There were many who were there who still didn't believe though they saw him and Jesus actually 00:03:58.100 --> 00:04:02.900 rebuked them saying, hey why is it that you still don't believe? How blessed are those that do not 00:04:02.900 --> 00:04:10.580 see and yet believe? And so the two pivotal events that transformed the disciples from Gethsemane 00:04:10.580 --> 00:04:17.620 and Golgotha to the upper room was resurrection where they saw the risen Christ and Pentecost. 00:04:18.900 --> 00:04:23.860 And obviously he'd be limited to a small community but he makes himself real. It's impossible for a 00:04:24.340 --> 00:04:29.380 people to worship and praise the way we just did 20 minutes ago if you weren't aware of the fact 00:04:29.380 --> 00:04:34.980 that your God is alive. And anyone who doesn't know God who would come into this place would also 00:04:34.980 --> 00:04:42.420 think that be a raving lunatics or that they actually know an invisible alive God. When we 00:04:42.420 --> 00:04:48.660 began to sing that song wandering into the night of vagabond he turned my life around like God man 00:04:48.980 --> 00:04:54.020 you should have seen yourself. One of the reasons I walk up and down is to just see 00:04:54.660 --> 00:05:01.220 I have fascinating how you believe that Christ this invisible king has changed your life. 00:05:03.300 --> 00:05:11.620 It's amazing. So these are the two events that change things around for them but before we go 00:05:11.620 --> 00:05:17.300 any further let's define boldness. Boldness is not the same as the invisible king. 00:05:18.660 --> 00:05:29.140 Boldness is not boldness is not brashness. It's not being obnoxious. It's not being loud. 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:34.260 It's not being offensive. This is not how it works. 00:05:37.140 --> 00:05:45.940 So what is it? It is being done with cowardliness. It's being done. It's being done as in an end to 00:05:46.020 --> 00:05:58.900 cowardliness. It is living not just speaking but living the proclamation of the gospel. 00:05:59.940 --> 00:06:05.940 The announcement of the proclamation of the gospel. It is living the proclamation of the gospel 00:06:08.420 --> 00:06:14.260 with a boldness. Hey guys it's one of the hardest things to do on earth and it's only going to get 00:06:15.220 --> 00:06:20.260 harder. The proclamation of the gospel is the hardest thing to do. As Christians we can take 00:06:20.260 --> 00:06:26.500 up many other causes and worthwhile causes noble causes take up causes of justice and they're 00:06:26.500 --> 00:06:33.060 important because it really helps people. Isaiah 58 is true but here's the thing the one thing that 00:06:33.060 --> 00:06:38.820 will face fierce resistance from every system that you can imagine that exists on earth will be the 00:06:38.820 --> 00:06:46.500 proclamation of the gospel. There'll be nothing that will be as strongly resisted opposed persecuted 00:06:46.500 --> 00:06:53.140 silenced as the proclamation of the gospel through different means. Two of the things that we suffer 00:06:53.140 --> 00:07:03.380 most as Christians is one the fear of rejection. Two we crave slavishly for the favor and the 00:07:03.460 --> 00:07:10.820 approval of men and the more sophisticated you and I get that more difficult it gets 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:18.420 where we crave the favor and the approval of men. Billy Graham was once called on tv on the late 00:07:18.420 --> 00:07:24.980 night show. This was before Letterman and all those guys. It was a guy called Billy Parra something 00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:30.660 like that and not Billy something else anyways he gets called on the late night show and so the 00:07:30.660 --> 00:07:39.060 first question the show host starts with is so Billy you're here to try and convert me right 00:07:39.060 --> 00:07:42.900 you're going to tell me that you want me to repent you want to tell me you're going to tell me that 00:07:42.900 --> 00:07:48.500 I need to be saved otherwise I won't go to heaven right and so he started off that way with with 00:07:49.300 --> 00:07:55.140 with a frontal kind of sarcastic attack which usually puts people off because then you don't 00:07:55.140 --> 00:08:00.500 know what to say and Billy Graham with a smile on his face sat there and said actually you're right 00:08:00.660 --> 00:08:06.740 I've been thinking quite seriously about whether you are actually saved and what would happen to 00:08:06.740 --> 00:08:12.100 you if you aren't how it'd be a good of the time it looks like speaking openly, false rightly, honestly, gently, not fearing the 00:14:42.340 --> 00:14:50.260 consequences of men when you look at Acts chapter 4 verse 18 to 20 you see that Peter and John had 00:14:50.260 --> 00:14:59.700 healed the lame man at the temple gate and now they've been pulled up in front of the Sanhedrin 00:14:59.700 --> 00:15:07.860 first time they're being treated like this eh so they must have been totally inexperienced in how 00:15:07.860 --> 00:15:13.700 to deal with it so go to Acts chapter 4 verse 18 to 20 and it says that 00:15:14.660 --> 00:15:18.260 they were not able to speak to him and they called him they called him again 00:15:19.060 --> 00:15:25.060 and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus but Peter we have seen and heard and the strange thing is where did he get the guts 00:15:40.020 --> 00:15:44.740 to talk like this it came from the Holy Spirit if you go to Acts chapter 4 verse 8 00:15:47.220 living sacrifice it'll oppose the living sacrifice self-preservation 00:17:50.520 --> 00:17:56.200 will oppose the living sacrifice self-preservation is when the animal that you put on the altar our hands and legs are free so once the altar gets to 00:18:10.200 --> 00:18:19.480 a certain level we just jump off the altar so the fear of rejection and the unhealthy desire for 00:18:20.120 --> 00:18:25.720 or faith for favor or approval and like I said before this is important because we live most of 00:18:25.720 --> 00:18:32.360 us live in a place where the more sophisticated we get the harder it gets because you don't want 00:18:32.360 --> 00:18:42.120 to look like a Christian in front of sophisticated people so we dilute the gospel we change it's 00:18:42.120 --> 00:18:42.840 costumate 00:18:46.840 --> 00:18:49.000 who are sophisticated people you 00:18:51.240 --> 00:18:56.200 I we're not talking about some rich and famous guy I'm talking about us 00:18:58.920 -->
