00:00:17.320 He never does that. 00:00:17.320 --> 00:00:24.120 Because we have a tendency to think he's, he'll say, oh, I'm full of love and then he'll 00:00:24.120 --> 00:00:28.680 say, oh, but I'm going to vac you for the next four generations and then love you for 00:00:28.680 --> 00:00:29.680 a thousand more. 00:00:29.680 --> 00:00:34.000 And it doesn't make much difference to you because you're in the third and fourth generation. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:35.200 So you get whacked. 00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:36.200 He's not like that. 00:00:36.200 --> 00:00:39.080 He's not a good cop and a Exodus 34 verse 14 says, I'm jealous. 00:00:52.520 --> 00:00:55.900 And it almost seems like he's saying, okay, this is who I am. 00:00:55.900 --> 00:01:00.940 But now just so you know, don't get too comfortable with this because this is who I am too. 00:01:00.940 --> 00:01:05.460 It's because we don't understand sometimes what he really means. 00:01:05.460 --> 00:01:09.660 This idea of God being a jealous God actually put Oprah off. 00:01:09.660 --> 00:01:14.520 Oprah Winfrey decided not to follow the Christian God because she read a scripture or someone 00:01:14.520 --> 00:01:17.180 said to her that the Christian God is a jealous God. 00:01:17.180 --> 00:01:18.580 She said, I don't want a God like that. 00:01:18.580 --> 00:01:22.460 And I'm thinking to myself, for all your brilliance, couldn't you have gone and read a little more 00:01:22.460 --> 00:01:25.280 and you'd have figured it out? 00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:29.960 And unfortunately, many of us think like that too. 00:01:29.960 --> 00:01:37.320 Where we think God is good cop, bad cop that don't get too close to him because just when 00:01:37.320 --> 00:01:41.600 he said he's gracious, compassionate, full of loyal love and mercy, he'll also say, I'm 00:01:41.600 --> 00:01:44.720 jealous and I'm very possessive and controlling. 00:01:44.720 --> 00:01:46.000 That's not the way this works. 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:51.100 I know it seems like such a flippant start to a teaching, but these are some of the thoughts 00:01:51.100 --> 00:01:54.940 that we go through. 00:01:54.940 --> 00:01:58.980 So in Exodus 34, 14, look at what he says. 00:01:58.980 --> 00:02:08.220 He's so determined about what he's saying that you can't misread his intent. 00:02:08.220 --> 00:02:12.780 Exodus 34, verse 14. 00:02:12.780 --> 00:02:15.260 He's not even saying that he's a jealous God. 00:02:15.260 --> 00:02:19.300 He's literally saying, my name is jealous. 00:02:19.300 --> 00:02:20.580 My name is jealous. 00:02:20.580 --> 00:02:21.580 That's what he says there. 00:02:21.580 --> 00:02:27.780 In the NIV, it says, do not worship any other God for the Lord whose name is jealous is 00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:29.660 a jealous God. 00:02:29.660 --> 00:02:32.300 He's not talking about, oh, I feel jealous. 00:02:32.300 --> 00:02:34.620 He says, my name is jealous. 00:02:34.620 --> 00:02:38.220 His very name is jealous. 00:02:38.220 --> 00:02:45.020 This is important to grasp in our present context because all religious reform, all 00:02:45.020 --> 00:02:50.460 religious revival, when you look at Israel's history, all religious reform or revival in 00:02:50.540 --> 00:02:55.860 Israel was brought about by a leader or a people who understood this and were jealous 00:02:55.860 --> 00:02:59.300 for their God. 00:02:59.300 --> 00:03:03.820 Without a jealousy for your God and without understanding the jealous nature of your God, 00:03:03.820 --> 00:03:10.140 it is impossible for a leader or a people to bring about reform or revival. 00:03:10.140 --> 00:03:15.900 All religious reform or revival in Israel was brought about by either a prophet or a 00:03:15.980 --> 00:03:22.220 king or a leader who understood that God was jealous, that he wanted his people for himself, 00:03:22.220 --> 00:03:23.660 and who were jealous for their God. 00:03:23.660 --> 00:03:29.700 You take Elijah, my God, he takes it to a new level when he taunts the prophets of Baal. 00:03:29.700 --> 00:03:34.980 We look at examples from the Old Testament where their jealousy for the God of Israel 00:03:34.980 --> 00:03:39.220 drove them to reform and brought revival to the land. 00:03:39.220 --> 00:03:42.180 When we talk about jealousy, it's two-pronged. 00:03:42.180 --> 00:03:54.500 On one hand, there is the jealousy that encapsulates or captures, there's a jealousy that encapsulates 00:03:54.500 --> 00:04:01.500 God's commitment to bring glory to himself. 00:04:01.500 --> 00:04:11.660 God's commitment to bring glory to himself. 00:04:11.660 --> 00:04:14.260 So there's that jealousy that he has. 00:04:14.260 --> 00:04:20.860 He's absolutely committed to bringing glory to himself. 00:04:20.860 --> 00:04:25.580 If I were to say that about someone on the earth, you would think they're highly insecure 00:04:25.580 --> 00:04:29.380 or highly self-focused. 00:04:29.380 --> 00:04:35.980 But when it comes to God, we need to understand that even though he is in our midst, he is 00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:44.140 transcendent, meaning he does not belong, is not part of this created order, that he 00:04:44.140 --> 00:04:47.980 is beyond that and he introduces himself into it. 00:04:47.980 --> 00:04:49.540 But that's not the reason. 00:04:49.540 --> 00:04:57.380 The reason God has committed himself to bring glory to himself is because he is the infinite, 00:04:57.380 --> 00:05:03.700 perfect creator. 00:05:03.700 --> 00:05:13.820 He is the infinite, perfect creator who intends creation to know him for who he is. 00:05:13.820 --> 00:05:17.180 Who intends creation to know him for who he is. 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:23.780 And he does not want his glory, he doesn't want his kabod, distorted, adulterated, scorned 00:05:23.780 --> 00:05:24.780 or misrepresented. 00:05:24.780 --> 00:05:26.820 He cannot afford it. 00:05:26.820 --> 00:05:27.940 He cannot. 00:05:27.940 --> 00:05:30.980 He is the infinite, perfect creator. 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:36.460 And if he does not commit to bringing glory to himself, as in displaying his splendor, 00:05:36.460 --> 00:05:41.460 his magnificence, his kabod, his weight, his power, his majesty, if he does not commit 00:05:41.460 --> 00:05:48.380 to it, then his creation will never know him for who he is. 00:05:48.380 --> 00:05:54.340 After having displayed himself as a glorious one, creation has still exchanged him for 00:05:55.020 --> 00:06:04.700 Sculptures made of stone and wood, worshipping cows and crosses and rats and grotesque masks 00:06:04.700 --> 00:06:09.260 and figures after displaying his glory. 00:06:09.260 --> 00:06:13.780 The Psalms say that he displays his glory through creation every day and yet in Romans 00:06:13.780 --> 00:06:22.540 chapter 1 it says, they exchange the glory of their creator for idols of created. 00:06:22.540 --> 00:06:25.740 Because God is committed to his glory. 00:06:25.740 --> 00:06:28.340 That's part of his jealousy guys. 00:06:28.340 --> 00:06:36.020 And he will not allow his splendor to be distorted and adulterated, scorned or misrepresented. 00:06:36.020 --> 00:06:39.140 He will not allow it. 00:06:39.140 --> 00:06:42.380 He tries to make that happen through his body now. 00:06:42.380 --> 00:06:48.620 This body must carry his glory like the Israelites carried his glory with sufficient fear and 00:06:48.620 --> 00:06:54.620 trembling. 00:06:54.620 --> 00:07:00.140 The problem with grace, and it is a problem God knew would happen, the problem with grace 00:07:00.140 --> 00:07:08.340 is grace allows us the luxury to sin and gives us a sense that we can afford it because his 00:07:08.340 --> 00:07:12.260 grace will cover it. 00:07:12.260 --> 00:07:18.580 And wherever sin increases, lawlessness increases but grace increases too. 00:07:18.580 --> 00:07:20.460 So God was aware of this. 00:07:20.460 --> 00:07:23.300 But that loving. 00:07:36.780 --> 00:07:38.980 I'm not saying that. 00:07:38.980 --> 00:07:43.900 I'm saying that God is absolutely loving but things exist in God together and they must 00:07:43.940 --> the person knows me well but the person kept saying, ah you're such 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:08.180 a miser, you're such a miser, you're such a miser, kept saying it. 00:08:08.180 --> 00:08:11.700 I listened to it the first time, I laughed the second time, I was quiet the third time. 00:08:11.700 --> 00:08:17.260 The fourth time he said it, something rose in me because I am not a miser. 00:08:17.260 --> 00:08:22.860 I know how generous I've been allowed to be by God. 00:08:22.860 --> 00:08:28.700 And so the fourth time he said it, I had to speak up because I knew that is not me. 00:09:14.820 If me, a flawed, relatively pathetic being compared to God, feels this way, then imagine 00:09:14.820 --> 00:09:19.700 what God feels when his nature is distorted. 00:09:19.700 --> 00:09:21.540 We don't realize this guys. 00:09:21.540 --> 00:09:28.540 He is committed to bringing glory to himself and this won't change. 00:09:28.540 --> 00:09:31.740 Jealousy, he is jealous over his glory. 00:09:31.740 --> 00:09:34.460 He is jealous over his glory. 00:09:34.580 --> 00:09:41.580 That's why he would rather have his name, this is such a strange thing, God would rather 00:09:41.580 --> 00:09:49.780 be true to his nature and have his name smudged, be smudged, dragged to the ground than change 00:09:49.780 --> 00:09:53.980 his nature and be deceitful and cover up stuff. 00:09:53.980 --> 00:09:58.900 This is why many ministries, when they fall, why doesn't God come and cover it up? 00:09:58.900 --> 00:10:04.420 When people fall, why doesn't God turn up and say, 00:10:19.380 Why do we hear about Noah sleeping with his daughters? 00:10:19.380 --> 00:10:27.220 Why can't a God who is so powerful, sanitize what he says about his dealings with man so 00:10:27.220 00:11:07.340 --> 00:11:09.700 He actually says, zeal for my house has consumed me. 00:11:09.700 --> 00:11:13.920 You have made my house a den of thieves and robbers. 00:11:13.920 --> 00:11:14.920 What was the intent there? 00:11:14.920 --> 00:11:16.420 Intent was very simple. 00:11:16.420 --> 00:11:23.180 The Gentiles were watching, the poor and the oppressed were watching and they were turning 00:11:23.180 --> 00:11:28.660 that place which was supposed to be the dwelling of the glory of the God of Israel into a marketplace. 00:11:28.660 --> 00:11:33.540 And at some point you see an indignant Jesus who will not be preached in most churches 00:11:33.540 --> 00:11:37.500 and he comes with a whip and he begins to chase them out, flipping tables and driving 00:11:37.500 --> 00:11:38.500 them out. 00:11:38.500 --> 00:11:39.500 Why? 00:11:39.500 --> 00:11:42.660 Because he said, the zeal for the house of God has consumed me. 00:11:42.660 --> 00:11:47.020 I am jealous for the glory of my father. 00:11:47.860 --> 00:11:55.860 This is also why in Hebrews chapter 12, Hebrews chapter 12 ends with these verses which says 00:11:55.860 --> 00:12:01.340 that, listen, another shaking is coming and the reason I am bringing this shaking is so 00:12:01.340 --> 00:12:07.260 that all religious and historical junk will be thrown out because I, your God, am a consuming 00:12:07.260 --> 00:12:12.700 fire. 00:12:12.700 --> 00:12:19.460 The reason he says he is a jealous God is because he is really committed to not having 00:12:19.460 --> 00:12:25.660 his glory distorted, particularly by his people. 00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:34.020 He can understand those who don't know him, messing around with him, saying things like 00:12:34.020 --> 00:12:39.260 Richard Dawkins said when he said, Jesus is the most worthless thing that could have happened 00:12:39.260 --> 00:12:40.260 to the world. 00:12:40.260 --> 00:12:41.260 Those were his words. 00:12:41.340 --> 00:12:50.180 I am listening to it and it is just grabbing my heart and I want to reach into the TV. 00:12:50.180 --> 00:12:59.100 And yet God listens to that and he can handle it because his intent about jealousy, as God's jealousy we are talking about, God's jealousy 00:13:15.920 --> 00:13:21.500 restricts the compromise of our exclusive allegiance to him. 00:13:21.500 --> 00:13:37.220 God's intimate relationship with me and now that he is so intimate with me, he is jealous when 00:17:32.020 --> 00:17:37.100 I'm drawn away by other loves and at the same time he is also able to bring me to a 00:17:37.100 --> 00:17:44.100 place where I'm presented blameless before him as it says in Jude 124. 00:17:48.540 --> 00:17:55.540 God's jealousy is an annoying speed bump to believers who love the world and keep God 00:17:55.960 --> 00:17:58.500 as a mistress. 00:17:58.500 --> 00:18:01.500 God's jealousy is an annoying speed bump. 00:18:01.500 --> 00:18:05.940 Like every time a believer is driving down the road and decides that his heart is in 00:18:05.940 --> 00:18:12.940 the world, God's jealousy is an annoying speed bump with sometimes nails. 00:18:13.100 --> 00:18:15.100 Why? 00:20:16.420 --> 00:20:19.420 And their response is, ah, they don't care. 00:20:19.420 --> 00:20:20.420 And it is so true. 00:20:20.420 --> 00:20:24.420 You can come home at 3 or 4 in the night and
