So I just want to focus on building David's tent, because that is 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:57.000 part of what we do, and we said building David's tent is not about worship, but building 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:03.000 David's tent is to be like David was with God, to show the world what it is to be in 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:12.000 relationship with God who is a father, who's a friend, and who dwells in you. And so that's 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:17.000 what I want to talk about today, building David's tent. To build David's tent, you have 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:38.000 to be someone who has David's heart. To build David's tent, you have to have David's heart. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:50.000 And what was David's heart like? God said he was a man after my heart. A man after my heart. 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:57.000 That also is not explanatory enough. A man after my heart. And so where we begin to see 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:02.000 David as a man after God's heart is perhaps what we'll be exploring, at least today and 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:08.000 maybe next week, I'm not sure. A man after my heart. You see that in the Psalms in particular? 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:24.000 Because the Psalms were his life story. It was during times of pain, joy, sin, guilt, 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:36.000 fear, betrayal, pleasure, good times. And through all these David's Psalms, which is about half 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:41.000 of the book of Psalms, because the other Psalms are written by Moses and Asaph and a few others, 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:48.000 you see the heart of God. You see the heart of a man after God's own heart. And in seeing that, 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:55.000 we'll have an idea of what it takes to have David's heart. And in seeing that, it'll expose gaps 00:02:55.000 --> 00:03:02.000 in our lives. In seeing that, it'll give us an idea of how we need to be. Because only someone with 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:13.000 the heart of David can build David's tent. So let's look at Psalm 63, verse 1 and 2 for instance. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.000 Psalm 63, verse 1 and 2. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:28.000 Yeah, Brandon. Oh, you're putting it up there. God, you are my God. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:37.000 This is going to be bothersome, eh? Warning you ahead of time. God, you are my God. Honestly, I seek you. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:46.000 What version is this? NIV. My soul thirsts for you. Can you find another version? Try New King James? 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.000 Or ESV? Sorry, Brandon. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:03.000 It says, God, you are my God. Honestly, I seek you. Or in some versions, it says, early I seek you. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:13.000 My soul thirsts for you. My body longs for you. My flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:19.000 So I've looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. So here's my question. 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:27.000 How come my soul and your soul doesn't thirst for him? How come your body doesn't long for him? 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:51.000 I mean, what he's saying is that David equates spiritual longing with a physical sense that his hearers can either see or feel where they begin to long for God. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:57.000 I was reading this and I suddenly thought to myself, man, I always used to think that I was a man after God's own heart. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.000 But then I look at this and I think to myself, oh God, you are my God. Honestly, I seek you. 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:09.000 And sometimes, honestly seeking is basically early seeking. Not early in terms of time, but before everything else. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:12.000 Early means before everything else. 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:17.000 We live in a world where these things have become impossible. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:36.000 So to seek him early, to seek early is to seek before everything else. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:52.000 Perhaps we can manage that. What about my soul thirsts for you? 00:05:52.000 --> 00:06:13.000 How long has that been, man? Your emotions and your will and your passion just can't bear not finding him. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:27.000 Some of you recently perhaps been married or some of you are still in love with the one you married or some of you who are going to get married perhaps have an idea of this. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:31.000 But the strange thing is you have an idea of this with a person who is flesh and blood and flawed. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:38.000 But you don't have an idea of that with this invisible God. You don't. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:50.000 I see the time you spend with someone you don't yet know that you may have met recently or have met a few times or a few months, but you still don't have that with God. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000 How come? How come I don't have this? 00:06:54.000 --> 00:07:03.000 Why does David have the ability in the Old Testament to write things like, 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:09.000 As the deer pans for the waters, for my soul longs after you? Why? 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:15.000 How does one thirst so much with one's passion and soul and emotions? 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:21.000 Where the body begins to long for the presence of God. What does that look like? 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:24.000 What does that look like? 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:36.000 When will our lives equate spiritual longing with a passion of the soul and a physical longing for God? 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:46.000 David was more removed from God than you and I because he was in the Old Testament. He didn't have the Holy Spirit living in him. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:52.000 What will happen when people begin to behave like this? 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:56.000 The building of a tent becomes the most natural thing they do. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:02.000 Because what was building the tent about? At the end of the day, the building of the tent was simply about the presence of God dwelling. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:10.000 That's all he did. It was a tent with the Ark. That's all. The Ark represented the presence. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:17.000 There's nothing I can do to make this happen except repent and say, 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:24.000 Father, do something in my life that will begin a new place for me and a new place for us. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:35.000 In an odd way, this teaching has ruined my estimation of myself because I thought I was much better off. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:51.000 You can have all the destiny, all the purpose, all the prophetic words you want, but if this is not there, then you're nothing but a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:09:03.000 For God, you are my God. Earnestly I seek you. Or earnestly I search for you. My soul thirsts for you. My whole body longs for you. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:06.000 In this parched and weary land where there is no water. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:12.000 So the first thing David does is David equates. This is like when Derek was doing that. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:48.000 David equates spiritual longing with a physical sense. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:10:16.000 I want to say that his hearers and watchers can see to the point where they long for God. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:32.000 I don't want to long for a physical feeling. I want to long for God with my soul thirsting for him. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:38.000 And my body longing for his presence. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:52.000 The second thing he said was that, early will I or earnestly will I seek you. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:06.000 Early is before everything. Before everything else. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:11.000 Early will I seek you. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:17.000 So we don't crowd him. Not crowding him. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:36.000 I don't know who said this but someone said, and I've read this before, that spiritual dullness is a result of me treating God like a pigeon in the park to whom I leisurely throw crumbs of my devotion between or after a long day of caring about other things. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:38.000 I'll read that again. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:12:03.000 Spiritual dullness is often a result of me treating God like a pigeon in the park to whom I leisurely throw crumbs of devotion between or after a day of cares and work. 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:11.000 And I think the person touches on something that's happening to our lives. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:24.000 The other thing that really bothered me was, how come I didn't recognize the parched and dry and weary land? 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.000 How come I didn't recognize it? 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:30.000 How come I didn't recognize that winter had crept in? 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:32.000 How come I didn't recognize that the leaves had fallen? 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:35.000 How come I didn't recognize the dryness of the ground? 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:39.000 How come I was okay with what I have right now? 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:47.000 And I am a passionate worshiper. I worship so easily. I love God. You see it in my life. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:55.000 But how come I didn't realize that around me the ground had grown weary and parched and the leaves had fallen and winter had crept in? 00:12:55.000 --> 00:13:00.000 That is bothersome. That is bothersome perhaps for two reasons. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:06.000 One, because of my blindness. Two, because of being satisfied with what I have. 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:13.000 And I would say the same applies to you. Or maybe not. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:31.000 I didn't notice winter had crept in the fallen leaves, the dry ground. 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:35.000 This is how marriages fall apart. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:46.000 This is how couples who paid a high cost to fall in love despite what culture said and got married and then they realized that something has changed. 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:48.000 And it's almost irretrievable. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:57.000 It's almost irretrievable because there have been so many winters now that have passed that you don't even know, you don't even remember because parched land is normal land. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:02.000 That's a scary thing to think that that could have happened to me and could have happened to you. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:11.000 You don't even relate to what David is saying when he says, my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:13.000 So how does David go back to it? 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:20.000 He goes back to it by going to the next verse where he says, I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:27.000 That's how he does. He doesn't change his geographical location by saying, okay, let me go sit on a mountaintop. 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:30.000 Maybe there I'll worship. Let me look at the sunrise. There I'll worship. 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:39.000 Now, he does it by remembering how he used to go into the sanctuary and he would gaze upon God's power and glory. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:42.000 In Psalm 27, verse 2, he does the same thing again. 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:48.000 He says that I may dwell in the house of the Lord and gaze upon your beauty. 00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:50.000 There is something that he calls to memory. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:55.000 So my question is, do we even have a memory or has it been that long? 00:14:55.000 --> 00:15:00.000 It's easy to think down this line and try to create a physical feeling or an emotional feeling. 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:05.000 And if you and I settle for that, then every time we'll have to recreate an emotional feeling. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.000 And that is such a sad substitution for God. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 When I was going to the church, I was in the church. 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:18.000 I was in the church. 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:20.000 Substitution for God. 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:32.000 I was going through the library of my mind trying to remember times where I know what it is for my soul to thirst after him. 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:38.000 And I so long for his presence, but I hate the fact that I have to go back a little while. 00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:41.000 I thought we were doing well. 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:46.000 We've got to get this back guys, otherwise we can't build David's tent. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:50.000 We've got to have a heart like his. 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:58.000 I'm thinking to myself, how come I read Psalm 63 and Psalm 42 and Psalm 27 and I haven't seen this longing in his heart that is so beautiful. 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:04.000 So try going down this line. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:11.000 I'm saying to you that this is not a guilt trip that God is sending you on, but he's saying, listen, don't be satisfied. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:14.000 I'm inviting you into new places in me. 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:27.000 I've seen you in the sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:30.000 So he activates his memory to remember why he longed. 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:33.000 Why did I long for God? 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:35.000 Then he remembers. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:42.000 Then he remembers. 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:46.000 He remembers God in the sanctuary. 00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:50.000 For him, it perhaps was a tent of meeting. 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:53.000 Remembering God in the sanctuary. 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:56.000 For him, it perhaps was a tent of meeting. 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:58.000 Remembering God. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:05.000 And then he remembers God's power. 00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:09.000 And he remembers his glory. 00:17:09.000 --> 00:17:15.000 In some versions say, he remembers God's hesed or loving kindness. 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:20.000 How did he remember? 00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.000 How does a man in the Old Testament remember these things? 00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:27.000 Does it happen through just looking at the Ark of the Covenant inside the tent? 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:33.000 Is it because it's made of gold and it has these angels, the cherubim with stretched out wings over the mercy seat? 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:40.000 No, man, I'm sure he saw more than that because how you can stare at gold till gold is just normal. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:49.000 There's something he saw about God in that makeshift tent on top of a hill with an ark there. 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:55.000 And he somehow was able to experience what it is to gaze upon God's power, God's glory. 00:17:56.000 --> 00:18:01.000 Maybe he experienced it when the ark would go out and he would win battles. 00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:06.000 I don't know. I really don't know. I'm guessing here. 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:10.000 But this man would probably spend time. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:24.000 Suddenly the parched desert is now a pool of praise. 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:30.000 Look at Psalm 42 verse 1. 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:35.000 Psalm 42 verse 1. 00:18:38.000 --> 00:18:41.000 No, this is good. I'm fine with this. 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:45.000 As the deer pants for water, 00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:50.000 So my soul pants for you, my God, my soul thirsts for God, for the living God. 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:54.000 Where can I go and meet with God? 00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:02.000 We've gotten so used to the Holy Spirit dwelling in us that we don't go seeking him. 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:05.000 As the deer pants for water, 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.000 I mean it's panting, it's not even, I need a drink of water. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.000 You know when you don't need a drink of water, you will drink anything liquid. 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:19.000 But it's odd how when you're really thirsty, 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:23.000 you only drink water. 00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:27.000 You don't even drink water. 00:19:27.000 --> 00:19:30.000 But it's odd how when you're really thirsty, 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:34.000 you only want water. 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:44.000 Water is satisfying only when there's a real need for it, eh? 00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:48.000 Water is satisfying only when there's a real need for it. 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:53.000 God is satisfying only when there's a real want for it. 00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:01.000 As the deer pants for water, so my soul longs after you. 00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:06.000 This longing, this yearning has to come back and it cannot be on a Sunday, 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:10.000 it cannot be during our times of worship. 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:14.000 This is a longing that causes worship. This is not a longing that happens during worship. 00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:19.000 This is a longing that results in spontaneous worship. 00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:22.000 My soul thirsts for God. 00:20:23.000 --> 00:20:26.000 My soul thirsts for God. 00:20:27.000 --> 00:20:30.000 And then I ask him to clarify, he says, for the living God, 00:20:31.000 --> 00:20:33.000 because he's known him so personally. 00:20:34.000 --> 00:20:37.000 What I hate about this is he's in the Old Testament. 00:20:38.000 --> 00:20:41.000 Then he says, when can I go and meet with God? 00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:46.000 Moses was like this, eh? 00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:49.000 He said, when can I go and meet with God? 00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:53.000 Moses was like this, eh? 00:20:58.000 --> 00:21:01.000 Psalm 27, verse 4. 00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:11.000 One thing I have asked from the Lord, 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:15.000 this only do I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. 00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:19.000 To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. 00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:23.000 One thing I have asked of the Lord that will I seek after, 00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:27.000 that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. 00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:31.000 To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:34.000 Again, this idea of gazing upon his beauty. 00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:38.000 Gazing upon his beauty. 00:21:39.000 --> 00:21:42.000 Gazing upon his beauty. 00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:49.000 Ah. 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:54.000 Sure. 00:22:16.000 --> 00:22:21.000 When I lose the light of you. 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:32.000 When I find the joy waiting in your hand. 00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:39.000 When my will becomes thrown in your blood. 00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:50.000 When all things that surround become shadows in the light of you. 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:54.000 One more time from the beginning. 00:22:56.000 --> 00:23:02.000 When I look into your holiness. 00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:09.000 When I gaze into your love's presence. 00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:20.000 When all things that surround become shadows in the light of you. 00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:25.000 When I find the joy reaching your heart. 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:33.000 When my will becomes enthroned in your blood. 00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:46.000 When all things that surround become shadows in the light of you. 00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:55.000 I worship you. 00:23:56.000 --> 00:24:00.000 I worship you. 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:06.000 I worship you. 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:19.000 The reason I live is to worship you. 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:25.000 I worship you. 00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:29.000 I worship you. 00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:37.000 I worship you. 00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:40.000 I worship you. 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:52.000 The reason I live is to worship you. 00:24:57.000 --> 00:25:02.000 As the days have fallen. 00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:09.000 The waters of my soul plops out to you. 00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:18.000 You are all that my heart desires. 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:25.000 And I want to worship you. 00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:31.000 As the days have fallen. 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:39.000 The waters of my soul plops out to you. 00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:48.000 You are all that my heart desires. 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:55.000 And I want to worship you. 00:25:57.000 --> 00:26:04.000 You are all my strength, my strength. 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:12.000 You alone are my spirit. 00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:20.000 You alone are my heart's desire. 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:27.000 And I long to worship you. 00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:46.000 One of the things that I think will be good for us to do 00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:52.000 is to begin to fill our homes with dancing in our streets with joy again. 00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:58.000 As in, I think the spirit in your homes with your children, with your wife, with your friends 00:26:58.000 --> 00:27:06.000 just begin times of gazing upon his beauty and then spilling into worship, eh?
